Description from the publisher
This drop-in, catered event welcomes all campus community members to explore a series of informative panels detailing the lives and contributions to civil rights of Fred T. Korematsu and Gordon Hirabayashi, who challenged all the way to the Supreme Court the orders that led to Japanese American incarceration. Professor Emerita Lorraine Bannai will offer reflections on the ways in which the wartime Japanese American incarceration continues to have frightening relevance. Please stop by anytime between 10:00am-2:30pm. Professor Bannai will offer brief explanatory remarks at the following times: 10:15am, 11:15am, 1:15pm, and 2:05pm - however, feel free to stop by anytime. This event is sponsored by the Common Text Program and the Office of First Year Academic Engagement. This year's Common Text is They Called Us Enemy by George Takei. In this graphic memoir, co-written by Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott and illustrated by Harmony Becker, George Takei recalls his childhood experience in the U.S. Japanese American incarceration camps of World War II.
