Join the Center for Civil Rights and Critical Justice at Seattle University School of Law for the next installment in the Organizing for Justice Series, featuring a timely conversation on municipal governance and community empowerment. Democracy and DEI Are in Trouble. Can Cities Save Them? Date: Monday, November 9 Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM PST Format: Virtual Webinar How can higher education and philanthropy help revitalize local democracy? In this session, Professor Kathleen Morris discusses her groundbreaking initiative, the We the Cities Project, which explores how universities, colleges, and foundation partners can construct accessible educational pathways directly from communities into local government careers. Conceived as a practical trade school for democracy, law, and government, We the Cities actively recruits, educates, and prepares community-minded constituents from underserved high schools to join municipal public service. After an introduction from Professor Angela Harris, Professor Morris will be joined in conversation with interviewer Prof. Melissa Lee, followed by commentary by Nick Allen, Inatai Foundation Policy & Advocacy Director, and Erika Evans, Seattle City Attorney, as well as audience Q&A. Professor Kathleen Morris is the founder of the We the Cities Project and a Resident Scholar at the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (Berkeley IGS). A nationally recognized authority on constitutional law, local government litigation, public lawyering, and civic education, Professor Morris previously served as a tenured professor at Golden Gate University School of Law and co-founded the San Francisco Affirmative Litigation Project at Yale Law School. Her scholarship includes Rebel Cities, Bully States: A New Preemption For An Anti-Racist, Pro-Democracy Localism alongside ongoing research on public-interest legal institutions and democratic renewal. The Zoom link will be sent to registrants closer to the event date.
