Description from the publisher

Photography Exhibition Layers Japanese Cultural Traditions With the Artists’ Take of Oregon refractiv, a collaborative photography exhibition by Kenji Shimizu, rei mastrogiovanni and Teppei Fukuda, opens at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon on November 7 and will be on view through March 28, 2027. The five pairs of photographs depict Oregon’s seasons utilizing traditional Japanese aesthetics and visual traditions. The project explores the relationship between tradition and cultural identity for these Japanese and mixed Japanese artists living and working in Oregon. Vogue-published photographer Kenji Shimizu, Grammy-nominated producer and artist rei mastrogiovanni, and doctoral candidate in Japanese literature Teppei Fukuda collaborated on this exhibition of photographs that portray Oregon’s four seasons through a critical reimagining of Japanese seasonal aesthetics. Drawing on the visual techniques of sumi-e ink painting, the project explores how seasonality, a prominent motif in traditional Japanese art, can be expressed through portraiture, gesture, everyday objects, and atmosphere. By imitating Japan’s culturally constructed imagery in a new context, the artists encourage viewers to consider how traditions may be fragmented across generations and in new settings. Also on view will be a selection of photographs by Kenji Shimizu; zines and artwork by rei mastrogiovanni along with kimonos styled from his Hybrid Kimono zine; and sumi-e ink pieces from the Japanese American Museum of Oregon’s collection.About the Japanese American Museum of OregonThe Japanese American Museum of Oregon preserves and honors the history and culture of Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest, educates the public about the Japanese American experience during WWII and advocates for the protection of civil rights for all Americans.
