Description from the publisher

MOHAI Mercantile is proud to host a special event celebrating the publication of the second edition of Jackson Street After Hours with award winning jazz critic and journalist Paul de Barros! The first edition of the book, published in 1993, reconstructed a world of nightclubs, speakeasies, and jam sessions – a thriving scene that launched the careers of several jazz greats. This highly anticipated new edition of the definitive story of Seattle’s early jazz scene is fully updated with new information, as well as newly discovered archival photographs, maps of key sites, and an expanded discography. Stephanie Johnson-Toliver, President of Black Heritage Society, will moderate a conversation with author and journalist Paul de Barros, musician and creative advocate Ben Hunter, and philanthropist Dana Frank as they reflect on the culture, heritage, and legacy of the jazz scene on Jackson Street in the mid 20th century. Come at 6pm to enjoy live jazz and community with representatives from local jazz festivals and institutions. Conversation and Q&A begin at 7pm, followed by a book signing with the author. Presented in partnership with UW Press and Black Heritage Society. Photo Credit: Singer and jazz band at the Black and Tan, Seattle, circa 1947. MOHAI, Al Smith Collection, 2014.49.002.036.0175
