The technique used in the older black & white pieces is “woodcut collage” printed by han d on Japanese paper. Interim works combine woodcut collage with acrylic pa int on canvas. The newest works are digital photo collage\, either on pape r or canvas. \nTHEN \\ NOW focuses on relationships—with the individual self & with family members—being a wife\, mother\, sister\, daughter\, cousin—& the struggle to maintain that individual spirit within\, as out er needs from others become more complex. One of her fav orite mediums is photography\, and she graduated from the Hallmark Institu te of Photography in 2012. During her time at Hallmark\, Elizabeth discove red not only a deep love for photography but also a passion for working wi th children\, particularly through portraiture. This experience led her to pursue an education in early childhood\, and she is now a teacher at Elmw ood Day School.   \nElizabeth has been the Director of Bethany Kids CREA TE Summer Program for the last three years. In her teaching\, Elizabeth en courages young artists to work together as a community. She created the Be thany bees: Bee kind\, Bee creative\, Bee helpful\, Bee brave\, and Bee yo u! — not only to honor the bees on Bethany’s property but also to enco urage a safe space for kids to be themselves\, work together\, and find th e artist they are.  \nWhen she is not teaching\, Elizabeth can be found i n her studio at Bethany\, where she creates her mosaic jewelry pieces!   \nRuby Sgueglia (they/them)\nInstructor: ages 6-7\nRuby Sgueglia is a mul timedia artist and art educator currently residing in Putnam County\, Ne w York. They have experience in a wide variety of artistic mediums\, with a particular concentration on painting and drawing. Ruby has taught a lit tle bit of everything to people of all ages and backgrounds\, but nothing is as consistently inspiring and exciting as getting to teach in environme nts like Bethany Kids CREATE Summer Program\, where they have been the Art Instructor for three years now. Free and open to all.  \n ——  \nThe Dungan Garden series explores how a landscape\, specifica lly a lotus pond\, can be expressed through the simplest possible gesture: the horizontal stroke inspired by Chinese calligraphy\, and the dripping guided by gravity.   \nDuring Yanmei’s residency\, she is developi ng a triptych paintings installation. Displayed individually\, the thr ee panels will form a three-dimensional spatial installation that can be e xperienced within a studio or public space.  \n“’Dungan’ means slo wer sensation and heightened awareness of time. For me\, this is not a sta te of numbness\, but a way of slowing down in order to become more atten tive to subtle changes in the body\, nature\, and time. Through repeated b ut never identical horizontal gestures\, I explore how a simple mark can c arry movement\, breath\, memory\, and the experience presence.”  \nFor this site-responsive work\, I will be inspired by the colors and visual qu alities of the autumn woods at Bethany as a reference\, allowing the local landscape to inform the development of the painting. The lotus is deeply embedded in East Asian artistic traditions\, while water has long function ed as a space of reflection\, transformation\, and impermanence. I am inte rested in bringing this cultural image into dialogue with the cultural liv ing landscape of Bethany.”  \n\nABOUT YANMEI\nYanmei Jiang is a New Yor k-based visual artist whose practice explores the concept of the “body a s archive\,” developing embodied memory through large-scale abstract pai nting rooted in muscle memory. Spanning site-responsive abstract painting\ , spatial installations\, and photography\, her work has been exhibited in ternationally\, including solo exhibitions at Gallery 456 (New York) and R ay Art Center (Shanghai). She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (2023) and has participated in residencies at the AnkhLave Arts Residency on Governors Island (2025) and ChaShaMa (2023). The 50 minute program w ill be performed with a small chamber music ensemble\, followed by a 15-2 0 minute Q&A with the artists.  \nMichelle will be joined by a guest al umni from Musicambia for 2 to 3 songs of their own\, arranged by Michel le. \nA NOTE FROM MICHELLE\nFor most of my career\, I’ve supported oth er people’s artistic work—as a teaching artist\, session musician\, so ngwriter\, an artist manager for seven years\, and now as a career and bra nd consultant. It always felt safest and easiest to stay on the sidelines of artistic work\, channeling my own creativity through someone else\, wit hout the personal risk of being seen. \nThis is in part because choosing m usic as a career can be a double-edged sword. The pressure of making it yo ur livelihood can sap the joy and nourishment it’s supposed to give yo u as an artist. Teaching songwriting workshops in prisons through Musicam bia is what changed that for me. Watching students write and perform th eir own songs\, often for the first time\, and seeing deep wells of passio n\, creativity\, courage and resilience\, broke through the fog and pushed me to start cultivating and writing my own music again. \nThis concert is the result. These songs are personal and reflective\, influenced by my fa vorite artists in R&B\, soul\, and world music\, and arranged for a small chamber ensemble that reflects my classical training. It feels fitting tha t this residency and concert are a culmination of this shift in my artisti c practice\, presented in partnership with Musicambia\, with one of their alumni joining me on stage. \nABOUT MUSICAMBIA\nMusicambia (“music” + “change”) helps people in prison and jail write\, play\, and perform music\, cultivating collaborative communities that benefit the health an d well-being of everyone involved. Musicambia’s Flagship Program\, whi ch began at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in 2014\, meets biweekly fro m September to June. Thirty incarcerated participants attend morning and a fternoon classes for 4 hours\, fostering teamwork\, empathy\, and a sense of responsibility to themselves as well as to their fellow students. Musi cambia also has programs at Bedford Hills\, Fishkill\, and Eastern Correc tional Facilities in New York\, and in Kansas and California. Musicambia  annually reaches 140 incarcerated participants\, as well as audiences of over 200 incarcerated people for concerts. Previously\, the organization worked in Indiana and South Carolina: all told\, Musicambia has create d programs in 12 different facilities.  \nMusicambia’s Teaching Artist s hold positions in the Attacca Quartet and Imani Winds\, and have taught at Juilliard\, Curtis\, Princeton\, and Peabody. They have won GRAMMY awa rds\, and collaborated with Pulitzer- Prize winners and pop-stars like Prince.
