DESCRIPTION:In this course we will engage with our birthright to communica
te with the Voices of Earth. Our human nervous systems developed in a cont
ext of deep sensory communication with our more-than-human kin\, in cohere
nce and embeddedness with the wild natural world we were part of. \nAlthou
gh as modern humans we now have many barriers separating us from this conn

DESCRIPTION:Directed by Kathleen MacLean\nSet in “eighteen hundred and s
omething”\, three very different women with a preference for 21st-centur
y slang sit in a fort on the banks of the Reddish River\, sharing their vi
ews on life\, love\, and that hot nerd Louis Riel (“He is SO dreamy…th
e total package!”)\nIn this lively historical satire of survival and cul
tural inheritance\, playwright Frances Koncan shifts perspectives from the
male gaze onto women’s power-in the past and present-through the lens o
f the rapidly changing world of the Canadian fur trade.\nWHY WE CHOSE THIS
PLAY\nWe are captivated by the way that Koncan’s irreverent and witty c
omedy looks at Indigenous history through a modern feminist lens. Poking f
un at the men who have stolen the limelight for far too many years\, Marie
-Angelique\, Cecilia\, and Eugenia track the progress of-and interact with
-Louis Riel and Thomas Scott. -Michael Shamata and Nigel Shawn Williams \n

DESCRIPTION:Join Elder Bill Jones\, spiritual leader of the Rainforest Fly
ing Squad and the Old-Growth Forest Protectors\, and co-author Karen Moe f
or the launch of their book Listening Once Again to Our Great Mother: The
Fairy Creek Blockades and the Life Story of Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones (
Dundurn Press\, 2026) followed by a discussion and book-signing on Septemb
er 22nd\, 2026 at the Saltspring Island Public Library\, 129 McPhillips Av
e\, Saltspring Island BC. \n“With the masterful insight and skill of Kar
en Moe\, Elder Bill Jones breaks our hearts open with his deeply personal
expose of the ongoing trauma inflicted on Indigenous people and their beau
tiful ancestral forests by colonial capitalism in Canada.”\n-Suzanne Sim
ard author of When the Forest Breathes. \n“The teachings of Elder Bill a
re inspirational. This is myth\, legend\, theology and philosophy. It is t
 he essential teaching for our time.”\n-Elizabeth May\, O.C.\, M.P \n“I
was lost before I was born”: the starting point of Pacheedaht Elder Bil
l Jones’ lifelong journey of decolonization. “You were all Indigenous
once”: the starting point for ending a world based on exploitation and g
 reed. \nAt Port Renfrew\, British Columbia\, in 2020\, both settlers and F
irst Nations experienced a re-indigenization and became reacquainted with
our Great Mother during the fight to save some of the last remaining old g
rowth forest at the Fairy Creek Blockades. As Elder Bill sat in a tent dur
ing a West Coast storm at the height of the protests\, he experienced the
final phase of his personal decolonization\, his absolute re-indigenizatio
n\, when he realized: “I know what happened!”\, a revelation that has
informed his life ever since. \nCombining the story of Elder Bill’s pers
onal life and ancestors\, elder wisdom\, settler feminism\, and the inspir
ational story of the Fairy Creek Blockades — the largest act of civil di
sobedience in Canada — Listening Once Again to Our Great Mother is wisdo
m weaving to motivate those towards their own self-awakening\, even after
 Elder Bill is gone.
