DESCRIPTION:Directed by Kathleen MacLean\nSet in “eighteen hundred and s
omething”\, three very different women with a preference for 21st-centur
y slang sit in a fort on the banks of the Reddish River\, sharing their vi
ews on life\, love\, and that hot nerd Louis Riel (“He is SO dreamy…th
e total package!”)\nIn this lively historical satire of survival and cul
tural inheritance\, playwright Frances Koncan shifts perspectives from the
male gaze onto women’s power-in the past and present-through the lens o
f the rapidly changing world of the Canadian fur trade.\nWHY WE CHOSE THIS
PLAY\nWe are captivated by the way that Koncan’s irreverent and witty c
omedy looks at Indigenous history through a modern feminist lens. Poking f
un at the men who have stolen the limelight for far too many years\, Marie
-Angelique\, Cecilia\, and Eugenia track the progress of-and interact with
-Louis Riel and Thomas Scott. -Michael Shamata and Nigel Shawn Williams \n

DESCRIPTION:Scott & Dave’s High Ontology\n**Culture as Nature: When Capi
tal Becomes the Environment**\n\nThis week Hughes turns from the artist fo
rmerly known as “Nature” to what he calls the “forest of media”: c
 ities\, commodities\, advertising\, television\, celebrity\, electronic no
ise\, shopping malls.\n\nYeah\, yeah—human beings have always lived insi
de culture. The people who scoffed at the previous announcement of six hou
rs ago are right. There was never some Indigenous-Australian **Deep Time**
when human sentience tasted matter (and its animated blobs) directly. As
Yoda said in Episode Zero\, “Never a time when consciousness encountered
  raw Nature—unmediated by language\, tools\, institutions\, and signs—
has there been.”\n\nWhat changes under “late” capitalism is the *sca
le and character* of the mediation. The human-made world becomes industria
lly produced\, endlessly reproduced\, commercially administered\, and fina
lly dense enough to confront us as a kind of **second nature**. So that’
s a real change! Capitalism used to just fill the environment with things\
, but now it manufactures both the [Heidegger term for field of arising]\,
the perceptual tongs that grok it\, and even our very minds. Which is why
Rick Roderick always glossed Adorno’s “the culture industry” as the
*MIND* industry.\n\nArt now competes with signs engineered to seize the e
ye instantly. So Hughes whips out this nice distinction: **“Pictures edu
cate\; signs discipline.”** Well! Let’s see how long that antithesis s
urvives.\n\nPop Art happened when painters stopped avoiding marketing garb
age and starting eating it: **Rauschenberg**’s junk and image-glut\, **J
 ohns**’s flags and targets\, **Warhol**’s repetition and celebrity\, *
 *Lichtenstein**’s comics\, **Rosenquist**’s billboards\, **Oldenburg**
’s swollen consumer objects. In music\, back in the 80s\, this was calle
 d “sampling”\; today it’s called “composing.”\n\nAnyway\, all yo
ur favorites from Postmodernism 101 are here but Hughes is by our side to
help us penetrate them. Check *this* out —\n\n*Other and earlier artists
had painted in series: Monet\, for instance. But when Monet painted his h
aystacks and lily- ponds\, his specific aim was to show\, in the most resp
lendent detail of nuances\, that phenomena are not standardized. His “re
petitions” were done to glorify the eye\, to show how it could discern t
iny differences\, and how these differences added up to a continuous alter
ation of reality. Discrimination within abundance was the essence of such
painting. Today\, we have sameness within glut\, and that was what Warhol
painted (plate 230). The difference between these approaches is like the d
ifference between high bourgeois French cooking at the end of the nineteen
th century\, with its strict formats enclosing a continuous variation and
metamorphosis of the ingredients\, and what one sees in a modern American
supermarket.*\n\nAnd speaking of Warhol\, check out [this piece of crap](h
 ttps://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/entertainment/andy-warhol-whit
e-burning-car-iii/) that sold for **$71 million** at [Christie’s](https:
//www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-4913707). Can you see the $71 million in it
? If not\, you have vision problems. Price is\, after all\, our civilizati
on’s most rigorously quantitative theory of beauty.\n\nThen\, because he
took a sociology class once\, Hughes gets Marxian. Television trains us t
o experience the world as montage: **war** → **toothpaste** → **celebr
ity** → **catastrophe** → **game show**. One of the old avant-garde dr
eams actually comes true: ordinary consciousness is reorganized by montage
 \, simultaneity\, collision\, discontinuity.\n\nUnfortunately\, **capital
owns the montage machine** and the machine runs under a certain imperative
—i.e.\, M—C—M′.\n\nVery sadly\, Robert Hughes died before the real
ly funny part\, which is that humans don’t exist anymore. Today the medi
ation is no longer merely in the air\, like culture and space\, but *in th
e thing*. The world reaches us today *already converted into information*:
camera sensor → compression algorithm → platform → feed → OLED
→ eyeball. We photograph the sunset or Ace Frehley while looking at the
phone screen. We navigate the physical city through Google Maps or the cra
ppy Apple Maps\, which almost sent me over a cliff. Forest fires\, wars\,
 hurricanes\, friends\, presidents\, galaxies—all arrive flattened onto t
he same glowing rectangle\, which now rests permanently in front of our ey
es.\n\nSo Hughes’s title is really quaint these days. We didn’t leave
Nature and enter Culture. Capital built a second nature\, and then also pu
t a screen in front of it\, and then also trained the cognizer that interp
rets it.\n\nBy the end of this\, the best art history episode of all time\
, Hughes tells us that Pop and McLuhanism both normalized the idea that **
what an image says no longer matters much because “the medium is the mes
 sage.”** Hughes rejects this outright! Human beings still ***judge***\;
questions of taste\, truth\, choice\, and **moral responsibility for image
s** remain unavoidable. Pop\, in his account\, helped strip art of its cla
ims to seriousness just as mass media displaced art as the culture’s dom
inant image-making power. And so …\n\n***The avant-garde died when art c
eased to control society’s responsibility for images.***\n\n**METHOD**\n

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to set up a perennial mushroom bed in your own backy
ard and enjoy edible mushrooms for years to come!\n\n\nWorkshop Descriptio
n\n The main mushroom species discussed in this workshop will be Pleurotus
ostreatus. Commonly called oyster mushrooms\, this species is a fabulous
type of fungi found naturally in temperate and subtropical forests around
the world (often found growing wild on trees in these parts). Not only are
these mushrooms beautiful\, but they are also a culinary delicacy and hav
e been found to have many environmental benefits. \n \nThe workshop will r
un for 2 hours\, in 4 parts that includes: \n\nTheoretical learning about
general mushroom cultivation and the mushrooms we will see that day\,\nMai
ntenance of established mushroom beds\, \nPreparation and inoculation of m
ushroom logs at the Welland Orchard\,\nAnd creation of a small Blue Oyster
mushroom buckets to take home.\n\n \nThe goal of this workshop is to lear
n about basic mushroom cultivation\, both in perennial garden spaces and i
n buckets\, and make you confident in growing your own mushrooms at home.
The participants will get to inoculate mushroom logs and each of the parti
cipant will get the chance to prepare their own Blue Oyster mushroom bucke
t to take home to start off their mushroom growing adventure! These mushro
om buckets are suitable for indoor or outdoor growing. \nBe sure to come d
ressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \n \nGetti
ng here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bik
e\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible. We are located right on the gallopi
ng goose\, and you are welcome to bring bikes into the orchard to lock the
m up safely. \nIf you are driving\, there are 8 parking spots located at t
he end of stancil lane\, 1 of which will be reserved as accessible for the
duration of the workshop. Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not
park in the large driveway on the south side of the street. Additional par
king can be found along the street on High St and Eaton Ave. \n \nAbout th
 e Instructor\nHi\, I’m Lily\, a microbiologist and environmental scienti
st. In my day-to-day life\, I like to collect hobbies and projects about s
elf-sufficiency\, environmental remediation and microbiology -including bu
t not limited to growing mushrooms. This mushroom workshop is officially u
nder the umbrella of my new project “Nature Finds a Way” a non-profit
that focusses on self-sufficiency and nature learning\, more information o
n that soon! \n \nHow to Register for this Event\nThis workshop is in pers

shop will be hosted outside in the orchard. \nThis workshop is available o
n a sliding scale basis. Please pay in alignment with your financial privi
lege to help us continue to offer tickets in this way. \nLifeCycles Projec
t Society is always working to learn more about\, and breakdown\, barriers
that may exist in accessing our programming. We understand providing slid
ing scale tickets is by no means an exhaustive look at systems of oppressi
on that exist for people. We welcome your ideas and feedback as we work to
continue learning. \nPlease contact us if you are no longer able to atten
d but hold a ticket so we can make your space available to someone else an

lling our office at 250 383-5800 or via email by contacting welland@lifecy
clesproject.ca \n \nAccessibility\nAccess from the parking area off Stanci
l Lane is through a latching unlocked gate. There is a gravel/dirt path sl
oping downward from the gate that leads to a wide flat grassy area with pi
cnic table seating. If you are coming from the Galloping Goose entrance\,
which also has a latching unlocked gate\, you will find a gravel/dirt path
that slopes upward to the wide flat seating area. The steepness of the pa
th varies throughout the Orchard and is steepest at the top of the Orchard
closer to the Stancil Lane entrance\, and at the bottom between the Gallo
ping Goose trail and the Orchard entrance. The pathway from the Galloping
Goose to the entrance to the Orchard has several sharp turns. \nThe Orchar
d has a single-stall gender-neutral composting toilet facility on site wit
h ramp access and transfer bars which will be open during the workshop. Th
e composting toilet is located below the flat area and toward the Gallopin
g Goose entrance. Hand sanitizer is available inside the toilet. \nThe wor

the weather. The seating provided is picnic benches. Please feel free to b

DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Arion Male Choir: Tradition and Community \nAbout
the Choir\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir represents one of the newest add
itions to the vibrant choral scene in Victoria\, BC. Formed in the summer
of 2018\, the choir is the result of the union between two long-standing e
nsembles: the Arion Male Voice Choir\, established in 1892\, and the Victo
ria Male Voice Choir\, founded in 1907. Both groups recognized the opportu
nity to better pursue their vision of creating “a community of men singi
ng for health and joy” by coming together as one. This merger has proven
to be a dynamic and successful venture\, yielding positive results both m
usically and organizationally. \nOur Mission\nThe choir is dedicated to su
staining the rich tradition of male-voice choral music. Each year\, member
s share their passion for music through a minimum of two public concerts\,
as well as performances at seniors’ residences\, the Victoria Remembran
ce Day ceremony\, and other community events. In support of music educatio
n\, the Victoria Arion Male Choir offers a choral scholarship program\, in
viting up to four student musicians annually to join and perform with the
group. New members are always welcome to experience the camaraderie and jo
y of choral singing. \nLeadership\nUnder the direction of Musical Director
Sean Lampard-Quicke\, who joined the choir in 2020\, and the accompanimen
 t of collaborative pianist Jennifer Mitchell\, a member since 2019\, the c
hoir continues to thrive and evolve. \nMembership and Rehearsals\nThe Vict
oria Arion Male Choir is actively seeking new singers for its non-audition
choir\, beginning in January 2026. Open houses will be held on Mondays\
 , January 5th\, 12th\, and 19th\; rehearsals start at 7:00 p.m. each Monda
 y.  at Cordova Bay United Church\, located at 813 Claremont Ave. The cho
ir performs four-part harmony\, with a diverse repertoire that includes cl
 assical\, spiritual\, folk\, and contemporary selections. Additionally\, t
he choir welcomes applications for its choral scholar program. \nFor those
interested in joining as a new member or learning more about the choral s
cholar program\, please contact Jim Johnson at jimmysj@shaw.ca or visit
 the choir’s website at www.vamc.ca.
