DESCRIPTION:The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents Mending Gently\, a s
olo art exhibition by Jenna Short. Jenna is a Dakelh artist from the Saik
’uz First Nation. She has always felt connected to forests\, oceans\, an
d the land\, which became grounding spaces in her life and provided a safe
blanket and place to breathe during times of uncertainty. \nThis connecti
on later influenced Jenna’s art practice. She often works with figurativ
e and landscape subjects through oil painting\, watercolour\, and wood car
vings. Her art practice heavily includes plywood\, with the material actin
g as colonized and commercialized pieces of land that are being returned t
o the body. According to Short\, Mending Gently explores themes of feeli
ng disconnected from place and the effects of the industrialized society o
n the natural body. \nWhere: The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective\, 2516 Dougl

lists\, cooks\, chainsaw operators\, and people familiar with off-grid sys
tems. If you aren’t sure if you are ready for a trip like this\, we enco

DESCRIPTION:The Chinese Student School Strike was a powerful\, year-long a
ct of organized civil resistance against institutionalized racism in Victo
ria. In September 1922\, the Victoria School Board attempted to expand its
existing segregation policy\, ordering all Chinese Canadian students up t
o Grade 7 to be removed from public schools and placed into Chinese-only s
chools. On the first day of the new term\, when principals marched the chi
ldren to the segregated site\, the students\, acting on a plan organized b
y the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) and other communi
ty groups\, dispersed and went home instead of entering the segregated fac
ility. This remarkable\, coordinated boycott of over 200 students successf
ully halted the expansion of segregation for a year\, forcing the communit
y to establish a temporary Chinese Free School to ensure the children’s
education continued. This pivotal moment demonstrated the unwavering resol
ve of the Chinese community to fight for equal rights and educational oppo
rtunity\, laying a foundation for future battles against anti-Asian discri
 mination in Canada.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 10\, 4:30 – 6 pm  PT\nEsquimalt Gorge
 Park Pavilion\n1070 Tillicum Road\, Victoria\, BC\n\n \nTHE PATH OF NEGAT
ION\n \n\n“The seeing of the false as false is truth” .\n\nKrishnamur
ti talked about Via Negativa (the path of negation) : the approach of find
ing truth\, clarity\, and freedom not by accumulating positive knowledge o
r following a system\, but by observing the false  and “what is”.\n\n
Why is “Via Negativa” so hard for us? - or is it?  This is difficult
in dialogues. Our human thought tends to create positive statements and co
nclusions. Why? What do we gain by positive statements and what do we lose
without them? Should I leave a dialogue feeling “good”? Can we “hel
p” each other in dialogue?\n\n \n\nAnyone deeply interested in self-exp
loration for inner peace and freedom\, is welcome to join our talks and di
alogue meetings\, guided by experienced facilitators passionate about self
 -inquiry and a shift in consciousness.\n\n\n \n\nThe Facilitator:\n\n\n\n
The magnetism of Krishnamurti’s words is irresistible to me. Over the ye
ars\, a shift in sight has radically illuminated relationships\, beliefs\,
and the exhausting maintenance of “me”.\n\nVala believes that Krishna
murti’s teachings throw psychology\, art and “self- actualization” i
nto a new light and open dimensions on what it means to “understand ones
elf”. Vala’s intensive study of Krishnamurti has an additional focus o
n inquiry into trauma. Vala Legan is a practicing Marriage and Family Ther
apist and Art Therapist\, specializing in trauma and attachment.\n\nShe ha
s published 18 children’s books as an illustrator\, as well as illustrat
ing over 30 national magazines and newspapers (www.valakondolegan.com).\n\
n \n\n \n\n\n\nAs resource we will be using  The Book of Life\, a coll
ection of daily meditations by J. Krishnamurti. It is available online and
from us at cost for $20.\n\n\n\nThe Book of Life e-book is also freely av
ailable here and looking it over for questions to further explore in our m
eetings is recommended.\n\nWe particularly recommend the readings on Belie
 f (February 9 - 15) before our meeting.\n\nMeetings are held on a donation
basis.  Your donation can be made here .\n\nThey will be held in the Boa
rdroom of the Esquimalt Gorge Park Pavilion.  The Pavilion is located in
this beautiful park\, next to a Japanese Garden.\n\n\n\nEnter from Tillicu

DESCRIPTION:Each November\, Remembrance Day invites us to reflect on and p
ay our respects to the people who served and sacrificed during times of wa
 r. Among them were Chinese Canadians from Victoria and across the country\
, whose contributions played an important role both overseas and at home.
During World War I and World War II\, Chinese Canadians volunteered despit
e facing discrimination and exclusion in their daily lives. More than 600
Chinese Canadians served in the Second World War alone. Many were not yet
recognized as full citizens and were denied the right to vote. Still\, the
y chose to serve\, believing in the future of their community in Canada. \
nSome served in combat roles\, while others worked in intelligence\, engin
eering\, logistics\, and special operations. Kam Len Douglas Sam joined th
e Royal Canadian Air Force and flew missions in Europe. Victor Wong served
overseas with the Special Operations Executive. Gordon Quan supported res
istance efforts in Southeast Asia. Fred Lee fought at Vimy Ridge and disap
peared at the Battle of Hill 70. Along with many others\, these individual
s contributed their skills\, courage\, and determination during critical m
oments in history. Families and communities in Victoria supported these ef
forts\, and military service became closely connected to broader struggles
for equality. \nAfter the war\, the contributions of Chinese Canadian vet
erans helped strengthen calls for equal rights. Their service is a vital p
art of our national story\, embodying the fight for both global freedom an
d domestic equality. In 1947\, Chinese Canadians finally gained the right
to vote federally\, marking an important step toward full citizenship.
