DESCRIPTION:Decisions about queer and trans lives have often been made wit
hout their involvement. Governments\, medical institutions\, and religious
organizations have created laws and systems that define and regulate thes
e lives\, usually by those in positions of power. \nIn this exhibition\, C
anadian artist Jeannette Sirois looks closely at these systems and asks wh
y they exist. This is not a show about visibility\, but about the structur
es that shape queer and trans experiences. Sirois presents portraits of qu
eer and trans individuals in a formal style once reserved for people in po
wer. Each person chose objects to include and contributed their own words.
These words fill the image in dense\, all-caps text that is intentionally
hard to read\, reflecting the challenge of navigating complex forms\, rul
es\, and bureaucratic systems. \nThe portraits are drawn slowly by hand in
coloured pencil\, in contrast to the speed of institutional decision-maki
ng. The subjects do more than sit for a portrait\, they confront the syste
ms that affect their lives. Together\, the works reflect experiences shape
d without their full knowledge\, consent\, or participation. \nThis exhibi
tion presents eight printed reproductions selected from a larger 12-image
travelling exhibition of the same title\, on view at galleries and public
institutions across British Columbia through to 2029. \n  \nJeannette Sir
ois is a queer Canadian visual artist based on Salt Spring Island\, BC. Wo
rking primarily in large-scale portrait drawing\, her practice examines th
e legal\, medical\, bureaucratic\, and religious systems that have shaped
and regulated queer and trans lives\, past and present. Rather than focusi
ng on outcomes\, her work investigates the structures themselves and why t
 hey persist. \nUsing graphite\, ink\, and wax and oil-coloured pencils\, S
irois creates highly detailed drawings through slow\, labour-intensive pro
cesses. Her work often challenges the traditions of classical portraiture\
, using scale and direct gaze to question its historical ties to power. \n
Her ongoing project\, At the Table: The Architecture of Control\, explores
the institutional spaces where decisions about 2SLGBTQ+ lives have been m
ade without their participation. The project is touring British Columbia t
hrough 2029\, with presentations at galleries and public institutions incl
uding the Cowichan Public Art Gallery\, Gibsons Public Art Gallery\, The V
iew at VIU\, Seymour Art Gallery\, and the West Vancouver Memorial Library
. \nSirois holds a BFA with Distinction from Concordia University and a Ma
ster of Education from the University of British Columbia. She is a two-ti
me Kingston Prize finalist\, and her work is held in the collections of th
e Surrey Art Gallery\, the City of Vancouver\, and the City of Fort Nelson
. She has also completed public art commissions for the City of Vancouver
and the City of Seattle. \n  \n\nThis event is part of Love in a Dangerou
s Time\, an exhibition exploring one of the largest human rights violation
s in Canadian workplace history. Learn more here.
