how animals interact with their surroundings. \nA New York Times bestse

DESCRIPTION:Greg O’Neill\, PhD\, RPF\, is a researcher with the BC Minis
try of Forests\, Kalamalka Forestry Centre\, Forest Improvement and Resea
rch Management Branch\, in Vernon\, British Columbia. He will be speaking
to Nature Vancouver members on Zoom on Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, st
arting at 7:30 p.m.\, on the subject of the BC Ministry of Forest's Assist
ed Migration Adaptation Trial (AMAT) of trees.\n\nGreg studies the adaptat
ion of tree species and applies this understanding to develop resilient re
forestation practices in a changing climate. Greg is a professional forest
er and former certified arborist\, with degrees in biology\, forest ecolog
y\, and forest genetics. He is the principal investigator of AMAT\, the la
rgest tree species trial in North America\, and he pioneered the developme
nt of BC’s Climate Based Seed Transfer system for selecting seed sources
for reforestation\, the first of its kind in the world. He was the 2018 r
ecipient of the Climate Change Innovator award by the BC Forest Profession
als Association.\n\nForested ecosystems form the lungs of our atmosphere\,
the liver of our streams\, the tendons of our soil\, the home to our flor
al and faunal neighbours\, and the soul of our well-being. Climate change
is a game changer for our forests. Numerous reports have already linked la
rge-scale forest disturbance with Anthropogenic climate change. The intent
ion of this presentation is to illustrate the relationship between trees a
nd their climatic "home" and show how climate change is impacting forests.
Lastly\, our speaker\, Greg O'Neill\, will make a case for “boldly goin
g where no forester has gone before\,” by deconstructing the 100-year-ol
d paradigm of planting local seed sources and restoring trees to their anc
estral climate as a strategy to mitigate climate change impacts to forests
.\n\nThis presentation will take place online via Zoom.  On the Monday pr
eceding the event\, Nature Vancouver members will receive the Zoom link in
the weekly e-News.  The talk will begin at 7:30 pm.  Non-members are we

DESCRIPTION:Guichon Creek is a one of the unique features of BCIT’s Burn
aby Campus. A vibrant riparian ecosystem that has been restored on the sou
th side of campus that provides space for the campus community to enjoy. \
nThe presence of the creek on campus alongside existing facilities also cr
eates challenges with the potential for flooding and erosion. As an exampl
e\, the south campus running track and surrounding paths that sit next to
the creek flood repeatedly\, causing damage and making the track unusable.
\nBCIT is launching a new project to provide a long-term solution to the
problem\, by replacing antiquated drainage infrastructure and managing sto
rmwater sustainably\, while naturalizing the areas close to Guichon Creek
. \nIn this Living Labs lecture\, that is part of the celebrations for
World Rivers Day\, the design team who have been developing this project w
ill be sharing lessons learned from developing the drainage and creek desi
gn and the engineering challenges of building next to environmentally sens
itive stream habitat. \nThe lecture will look at how to integrate a pro
ject like this with long term planning for stormwater management and habit
 at restoration. \nPresenters \n\nAllana Spooner\, P.Eng.\, PMP Project Man
