DESCRIPTION:Decisions about queer and trans lives have often been made wit
hout their involvement. Governments\, medical institutions\, and religious
organizations have created laws and systems that define and regulate thes
e lives\, usually by those in positions of power. \nIn this exhibition\, C
anadian artist Jeannette Sirois looks closely at these systems and asks wh
y they exist. This is not a show about visibility\, but about the structur
es that shape queer and trans experiences. Sirois presents portraits of qu
eer and trans individuals in a formal style once reserved for people in po
wer. Each person chose objects to include and contributed their own words.
These words fill the image in dense\, all-caps text that is intentionally
hard to read\, reflecting the challenge of navigating complex forms\, rul
es\, and bureaucratic systems. \nThe portraits are drawn slowly by hand in
coloured pencil\, in contrast to the speed of institutional decision-maki
ng. The subjects do more than sit for a portrait\, they confront the syste
ms that affect their lives. Together\, the works reflect experiences shape
d without their full knowledge\, consent\, or participation. \nThis exhibi
tion presents eight printed reproductions selected from a larger 12-image
travelling exhibition of the same title\, on view at galleries and public
institutions across British Columbia through to 2029. \n  \nJeannette Sir
ois is a queer Canadian visual artist based on Salt Spring Island\, BC. Wo
rking primarily in large-scale portrait drawing\, her practice examines th
e legal\, medical\, bureaucratic\, and religious systems that have shaped
and regulated queer and trans lives\, past and present. Rather than focusi
ng on outcomes\, her work investigates the structures themselves and why t
 hey persist. \nUsing graphite\, ink\, and wax and oil-coloured pencils\, S
irois creates highly detailed drawings through slow\, labour-intensive pro
cesses. Her work often challenges the traditions of classical portraiture\
, using scale and direct gaze to question its historical ties to power. \n
Her ongoing project\, At the Table: The Architecture of Control\, explores
the institutional spaces where decisions about 2SLGBTQ+ lives have been m
ade without their participation. The project is touring British Columbia t
hrough 2029\, with presentations at galleries and public institutions incl
uding the Cowichan Public Art Gallery\, Gibsons Public Art Gallery\, The V
iew at VIU\, Seymour Art Gallery\, and the West Vancouver Memorial Library
. \nSirois holds a BFA with Distinction from Concordia University and a Ma
ster of Education from the University of British Columbia. She is a two-ti
me Kingston Prize finalist\, and her work is held in the collections of th
e Surrey Art Gallery\, the City of Vancouver\, and the City of Fort Nelson
. She has also completed public art commissions for the City of Vancouver
and the City of Seattle. \n  \n\nThis event is part of Love in a Dangerou
s Time\, an exhibition exploring one of the largest human rights violation
s in Canadian workplace history. Learn more here.

DESCRIPTION:DRAWING IN THE GALLERY\n \nYou are invited to draw in the gall
ery during this monthly Sunday session. This is an open drawing activity m
eant to encourage looking\, slowing down and spending time in the galler
y space. Prompts may be offered\, but you are welcome to draw in any way t
hat feels comfortable to you. There is no expectation to create a finished
artwork. All drawings are welcome! No experience is necessary and su
pplies are provided.   \nBy donation. Pre-registration encouraged\, dro
 p-ins welcome.\nRecommended for ages 16+. \n  \nABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS  \
 nLure  | June 6th – August 23rd \nFrom subsistence to livelihood\, fr
om sport to ritual\, fishing links people from coast to coast to coast. Th
is thematic group exhibition includes work by Indigenous and non-Indigenou
s artists across Canada with ties to the Pacific\, Arctic and Atlantic Oce
ans\, and the freshwater bodies that flow between. Together the artists ex
plore the complex social and cultural significance of the ancient yet ever
yday activity of fishing. \n  \nLandon Mackenzie: Weather Patterns | Sept
ember 5th – November 21st \nStarting in the shallow tidewaters of Cardi
gan Bay\, Prince Edward Island\, Landon Mackenzie’s Weather Pattern se
ries (2020–) balances chance and control to envelop the viewer in the ar
tist’s painted worlds. Looking at the dotted sandstone-inspired canvases
\, you might see a charged nervous system\, a celestial body or the microc
osm of a riverbed’s speckled surface. The depth of each painting reveals
the linen canvas as a site-responsive material that soaks up its environm
 ent: saltwater\, sunshine\, wind\, rain\, dew and starry nights—all beco
me foundational materials in Mackenzie’s works. Merging paint and weathe
r\, the canvases evoke the intimate connection between internal and extern
al landscapes.  \n  \n\n\nREGISTER ONLINE OR AT THE BOX OFFICE:\n604.927

DESCRIPTION:While chapbooks can be meticulously crafted from handmade pape
r\, adorned with intricate bindings\, and embellished with countless artis
tic details\, they can also emerge from the simplest materials at hand—f
 ormed quickly\, intuitively\, and with a spirit of experimentation.\n\nIn
this workshop at Enabling Arts\, participants will explore the art and pos
sibilities of chapbook-making through poetry\, language\, and creative pra
ctice. Using multilingual chapbooks as inspiration\, we will write new poe
ms\, examine a diverse collection of chapbooks from different traditions a
nd styles\, and learn three foundational chapbook folds. The remarkable va
riety of chapbook forms reflects the rich diversity of languages and lived
experiences across Turtle Island\, while poetry offers a space where thes
 e voices can meet\, intersect\, and resonate.\n\nThrough close examination
of multilingual poems and the craft choices behind them\, participants wi
ll revise and refine their own writing while considering how the physical
form of a chapbook can deepen and extend the meaning of their work.\n\nBy
the end of the workshop\, each participant will leave with a selection of
favourite chapbooks from the sample collection\, as well as their own hand
made chapbook—folded\, sewn\, collaged\, and shaped according to their u
nique creative vision—containing an original poem.\n\nWriter-in-Residenc
 e\n\nKevin Spenst (he/him) is a poet\, editor\, performer\, musician\, and
chapbook artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores the intersectio
ns of language\, community\, and creative expression. He is the author of
four full-length poetry collections and nineteen chapbooks. His forthcomin
 g book\, Stanley Park Manor: A Collective History (Anvil Press\, fall 2026
)\, brings together lyric essays\, neighbour interviews\, and personal nar
ratives to create a layered portrait of place and community. He is also a

a free\, drop-in tour of Landon Mackenzie: Weather Patterns.
 \n \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nLandon Mackenzie: Weather Patterns   \nS
tarting in the shallow tidewaters of Cardigan Bay\, Prince Edward Island
\, Landon Mackenzie’s Weather Pattern series (2021–) balances ch
ance and control to envelop the viewer in the artist’s painted worlds. L
ooking at the dotted sandstone-inspired canvases\, you might see a c
harged nervous system\, a celestial body or the microcosm of a r
iverbed’s speckled surface. The depth of each painting reveals the
linen canvas as a site-responsive material that soaks up its environment:
  saltwater\, sunshine\, wind\, rain\, dew and starry nights—all beco
me foundational materials in Mackenzie’s works. Merging paint an
d weather\, the canvases evoke the intimate connection between inter
nal and external landscapes. To begin this bi-coastal project\, Mack
enzie first stapled the river-soaked linen to a wooden por
ch on Prince Edward Island\, where she applied a multitude of co
lours. The artist next rolled and shipped the work like a ta
pestry to her Vancouver studio\, where she responded to the tran
sformed surface. Each of these large paintings was enlivened from
its interaction with East Coast summer tides before coalescing in the
artist’s West Coast studio.   \nSupported by the Audain Foundation.
