DESCRIPTION:This isn’t your high school English class’ Shakespeare–
it’s Bard on the Beach! Presenting plays written by the Bard himself\, B
ard on the Beach is an annual Vancouver tradition that features a series o
f expertly directed and acted Shakespearean plays. \nBard on the Beach 202
6\nBetween June and September 2025\, the company is putting on four produc
tions: The Merry Wives of Windsor\, Macbeth\, Goblin:Oedipus\, and Antigo
ne. These will take place on the BMO Mainstage and Douglas Campbell Theat
re\, under the tents at Vanier Park. \nPhoto: Bard on the Beach Shakespear
 e Festival\nWhether you prefer drama\, intrigue\, or comedy\, you won’t
be short of excitement with Bard on the Beach’s performances. This 2026
season is sure to have you learning all about Shakespeare’s brilliant wr
iting. It’ll have you turning from a “Shakespeare agnostic into [a] Sh
akespeare lover\,” as Bard Founding Artistic Director Christopher Gaze p
uts it. \nWe’ve listed below what each production is about\, so you can
read for yourself which of Shakespeare’s works you’d like to experienc
 e. \nThe Merry Wives of Windsor: BMO Mainstage\nShakespeare’s laugh-out-
loud comedy comes alive with music in and around the community athletic ce
ntre of a (fictional) Vancouver suburb that is seriously obsessed with soc
cer. This classic farce follows the roguish Sir John Falstaff\, who se
ts out to fix his financial woes by wooing two married women so that
he can steal their husbands’ fortunes—only for his targets\, Mrs. For
d and Mrs. Page\, to come together and turn the tables on him. With livel
y musical numbers woven throughout\, this production guarantees an eveni
 ng of laughter\, mischief\, and merriment.   \nMacbeth: BMO Mainstage\n
“What’s done cannot be undone.” A thrilling exploration of fate\, de
sire\, and downfall\, Macbeth tells the tragic tale of a victorious gene
ral who learns from a prophecy that he will become King. Spurred on by his
own desires and the ruthless encouragement of his wife\, Macbeth murders
King Duncan and seizes the crown\, before descending into tyranny as he tr
ies to hold onto his throne. Recognized as one of Shakespeare’s darkest
and most popular tragedies\, this production grounds the story in a harsh\
, dystopian world. Stark design and stylized visuals heighten themes of po
wer and paranoia drawing audiences deep into a world that is as haunting a
s it is unforgettable. \nGoblin:Oedipus: Douglas Campbell Theatre\nA rioto
us reinvention\, Goblin:Oedipus is performed by the wildly popular Gobli
ns—WUG\, KRAGVA\, and MOOG—whose irreverent take on Macbeth delighted
audiences at Bard on the Beach in 2023. This time\, the trio brings their
chaotic curiosity and hilarious audience interaction to a fresh retelling
of Sophocles’ tragic myth Oedipus the King\, adapted by John Murrell. A
mid a deadly plague that grips Thebes\, Oedipus vows to uncover the murder
er of the previous king\, only to set himself on a path of shocking self-d
iscovery. Determined to delve deeper into the Dionysian degeneracy of the
human race\, three Goblins offer up a cautionary tale of patricide\, inces
 t\, and eye-gouging comedy that you won’t forget. \nThis production is f
or audiences that are 18 years of age and older. It contains adult themes
and strong language that some people may find offensive. \nAntigone: Dougl
ass Campbell Theatre\nThis bold new adaptation by local playwright Kate Be
sworth presents Sophocles’ classic Greek tragedy for a contemporary audi
ence. Antigone\, the daughter of Oedipus\, defies King Creon’s decree by
burying her rebel brother in the aftermath of a civil war\, setting off a
chain of events that pits family loyalty against political authority—le
ading to devastating consequences. Exploring themes of resistance\, voice\
, and generational reckoning\, Antigone is raw\, timely\, and emotionall
y potent\, offering a story as relevant now as it was in ancient Greece. \
nPhoto: Bard on the Beach\nTickets are currently starting at $30 for regu

DESCRIPTION:The Play That Goes Wrong brings you into the opening night of
the Cornley Drama Society’s newest production\, The Murder at Haversham
Manor. \nAfter months of preparation\, surely everything will go to plan\,
right? Wrong! Things quickly go from bad to utterly disastrous with these
accident-prone thespians. Props fail and cues are missed\, but the cast p
ushes through to deliver this 1920s whodunit. Expect actors who trip over
everything (including their lines)\, an unconscious leading lady\, and a c
orpse that can’t play dead. Part Agatha Christie and part Monty Python\,
this Olivier Award–winning comedy has fans around the world begging for
more. \nThe Play That Goes Wrong\nIn September 2023\, the Arts Club produ
ced Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Written by Lewis\, Sayer and Shields\, audiences
loved the chaotic humour and mishaps that made it such a hit at the Stanl
ey. The Play That Goes Wrong also offers uproarious fun. It brings even mo
re laughs\, absurd situations\, and theatrical mayhem as the play unfolds.
\n“These playwrights are excellent at creating slapstick farce\, and we
know that this type of comedy is the perfect boisterous fun for summer\,
” said Ashlie Corcoran\, the Arts Club’s Artistic Director. “The phy
sical comedy and behind-the-scenes havoc showcase the talent and ingenuity
of our cast and creative team. It takes great technical skill to pull off
‘bad’ theatre\, and under the direction of Josh Epstein\, this produc
tion will deliver an unforgettable and wildly entertaining experience for

st Dropped And Here’s What To Expect \nTheatre Under The Stars\nTUTS has
a long history of putting on fantastic performances. Beginning all the wa
y back in 1969\, the company annually puts on a series of musicals under t
he stars. They bring the magic of theatre to the beautiful outdoor setting
  of Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl. \nInterweaving “setting\, scenery\, co
ncessions\, and quality art”\, this is an experience you can only have w
ith TUTS. Under the starry sky in Stanley Park\, this open-air theatre wil
l have you experiencing excellent performances while surrounded by lush sc
enery. \nFrom July 3 – August 22 TUTS is featuring Sister Act and Disn
ey’s The Little Mermaid on the stage. \nSister Act is based on the 1992
hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg. It follows an aspiring disco diva who
is suddenly thrust into witness protection at a nearby convent after witn
essing a shooting involving her gangster boyfriend. She adopts a new perso
na and is tasked with taking over the convent’s flailing choir. \nThe Li
ttle Mermaid is also based on a film\, this time being Disney’s classic
animated movie from 1989. This classic tale follows Ariel\, a curious merm
aid who dreams of a world above the sea. When she save the life of Prince
Eric\, Ariel strikes a dangerous bargain with a sea witch\, trading her vo
ice for a pair of legs. Ariel sets out onto land to win Prince Eric’s he
art and break the curse with true love’s kiss. \nTicket Information\nTUT

DESCRIPTION:Name: Xindong Lin    \n\nDate: July 3\n\nTime: 2-3pm\n
\nLocation: X836\n\nSupervisor's name: Michiel van de Panne\n\nThesis titl
 e:  Capability-aware Planning In Physics-based Climbing\n\nAbstract:\n\nR
ock climbing\, especially bouldering\, requires both rigorous route planni
ng and precise body control to reach the goal. Recent methods have establi
shed effective ways to control body movements in a human-like fashion by l
everaging imitation learning with motion capture data. While these methods
can address climbing in local areas\, their ability to plan over longer h
orizons remains limited. To specifically address the planning problem\, pr
evious methods have built global graphs and used graph search to find the
best route. However\, their search space grows exponentially with wall siz
e\, which makes both planning and subsequent motion generation very slow.
These search-based methods also do not take the capability of the climber
into account\, focusing only on wall difficulty.\n\nIn this thesis\, we pr
opose a capability-aware high-level planner that can be combined with a lo
w-level control policy to solve the planning problem with natural climbing
motions. The high-level planner accounts for both wall difficulty and the
capability of the low-level control policy\, and it can avoid sparse area
s with no holds and filter out difficult routes based on the low-level pol
icy's capabilities. The low-level policy is trained using reinforcement le
arning (RL) to acquire climbing skills and natural motion. We evaluate our
method on a variety of walls and show that it can outperform the search-o
nly approach and the RL-only approach in terms of wall solving and plannin
 g time.

rvisors: Anne Condon and Khanh Dao Duc\n\nThesis title: Computational meth
ods for heterogeneity\, fairness and data quality with applications to bio
medical data\n\nAbstract:\nModern biomedical research increasingly relies
on large datasets\, from genetic profiles to hospital records\, to underst
and disease and improve care. However\, these datasets are often messy and
complex\, posing three core challenges: biological data varies in ways th
at distort analysis\, from unusual data points to differences in cell shap
es across conditions\; observational data or predictive models can treat d
ifferent patient groups unfairly\; and self-reported health information is
often inconsistent across time.\n\nThis dissertation develops computation
al methods to tackle each challenge. We introduce a method to detect and c
orrect unusual data points that would otherwise mislead visualizations of
biological data\, and investigate better ways to compare the shapes of can
cer cells. We develop methods to improve prediction across different patie
nt populations in hospital records and to rigorously test whether a predic
tive model treats all groups fairly. Finally\, we propose approaches to re
concile conflicting self-reports in longitudinal health studies.\n\nTogeth
er\, these methods contribute toward more reliable and equitable analysis
 of biomedical data.

DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the first major survey of Greg Gi
rard\, one of Canada’s most influential contemporary photographers\, fro
 m July 10–Oct. 25\, 2026. \nThe exhibition presents more than 160 photo
graphs spanning the past half century\, including never-before-seen outtak
es from his iconic photobooks\, and traces his evolution as an artist. The
show unfolds chronologically beginning with some of the earliest images G

freelance journalist in Asia and contributing to publications like Time Ma

DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival returns to Sen
̓áḵw/Vanier Park in Vancouver and is on now until September 19\, 2026.
  \nThe Festival’s 37th Season features a blend of Shakespearean comedy a
nd tragedy with two unique adaptations of Greek classics. \nBard on the Be
ach 2026\n“We are thrilled to bring together the work of Shakespeare and
Sophocles for an unforgettable season at Bard on the Beach\,” said Foun
ding Artistic Director Christopher Gaze. “Each of our productions bring
something uniquely different this season\, whether you’re a committed Sh
akespeare fan or a first-time visitor. \nOn the BMO Mainstage\, our hilari
ous production of The Merry Wives of Windsor captures the excitement aroun
d soccer in Vancouver this summer and the tragedy of Macbeth receives a ha
unting reimagining.” \nAdds Gaze\, “In our Douglas Campbell Theatre\,
two Greek plays are retold in clever new ways with a powerful adaptation o
f Antigone along with an irreverent staging of Sophocles’ tragic myth in
Goblin:Oedipus. It’s a season where audiences can watch marvellous Cana
dian theatre talent against one of the most beautiful settings in Vancouve
 r.” \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n

 \n\n\n \nBMO Mainstage\nOn the BMO Mainstage it’s a laugh-out-loud\, mus
ic-filled production of The Merry Wives of Windsor directed by Rebecca Nor
than and adapted by Bruce Horak with Rebecca Northan. \nSet in and around
the community athletic centre of a (fictional) Vancouver suburb seriously
obsessed with soccer. This production guarantees laughter\, mischief\, and
merriment as the roguish John Falstaff sets out to woo two married women
in hopes of stealing their fortunes. \nIt will play in repertory with the
tragic tale of Macbeth. Adapted and directed by Stephen Drover\, this thri
lling exploration of fate\, desire\, and downfall will use stark design an
d stylized visuals to heighten themes of power and paranoia drawing audien
ces deep into a world that is as haunting as it is unforgettable. \nBMO Ma
instage productions run from June 9 to September 19. \nDouglas Campbell Th
eatre\nThe Douglas Campbell Theatre will host two unique adaptations of cl
assical Greek works. Directed by Ming Hudson\, Sophocles’ classical Gree
k tragedy Antigone is reimagined in a bold new adaptation by local playwri
ght Kate Besworth created for a contemporary audience. \nExploring themes
of resistance\, voice\, and generational reckoning\, Antigone is raw\, tim
ely\, and emotionally potent\, offering a story as relevant now as it was
in ancient Greece. \nThe Goblins return to Bard on the Beach for the first
time since 2023’s wildly popular Goblin:Macbeth with their riotous rein
vention\, Goblin:Oedipus. WUG\, KRAGVA\, and MOOG bring their chaotic curi
osity and hilarious audience interaction to a fresh retelling of Sophocles
’ Oedipus the King\, adapted by John Murrell. \nDouglas Campbell Theatre
productions run from June 30 to September 19. \nSPECIAL EVENTS:\n\n*NEW*

DESCRIPTION:Canada and BC speak the language of climate leadership whil

ents are using financial and political instability to fast-track fossil fu

based carbon solutions (i.e.\, carbon credits) are being used to justify f

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Viveka Melki\, Melki Films \nDocumentary filmmaking h
as the power to shape public understanding\, influence policy\, and transf
orm how societies perceive people and communities. Yet with this influence
comes profound ethical responsibility. How can filmmakers move beyond sim
ply telling stories about people to creating stories with them? What does
it mean to practice ethical storywork when narratives emerge from experien
 ces of trauma\, marginalization\, and systemic injustice? \nJoin award-win
ning filmmaker Viveka Melki\, founder of Melki Films and CAE Ethics Fellow
Larissa Maxwell for a thought-provoking conversation exploring the evolvi
ng ethics of second-person storywork and documentary filmmaking. Drawing f
rom decades of experience documenting complex social issues – including
 human trafficking\, sexual exploitation\, financial crime\, prisoners of w
ar\, queer communities\, and older adults – we will reflect on how traum
a-informed practice\, lived experience inclusion\, and collaborative story
telling ground her approach to filmmaking. This talk will examine emerging
questions surrounding the evolution of consent from a one-time transactio
n to an ongoing relationship\, the ethical sharing of narrative power\, re
 presentation of marginalized\, racialized\, and equity-deserving communiti
es\, and the importance of fair and holistic compensation for those whose
lived experiences make these stories possible. This talk will also provide
  space for audience interaction.

DESCRIPTION:While chapbooks can be meticulously crafted from handmade pape
r\, adorned with intricate bindings\, and embellished with countless artis
tic details\, they can also emerge from the simplest materials at hand—f
 ormed quickly\, intuitively\, and with a spirit of experimentation.\n\nIn
this workshop at Enabling Arts\, participants will explore the art and pos
sibilities of chapbook-making through poetry\, language\, and creative pra
ctice. Using multilingual chapbooks as inspiration\, we will write new poe
ms\, examine a diverse collection of chapbooks from different traditions a
nd styles\, and learn three foundational chapbook folds. The remarkable va
riety of chapbook forms reflects the rich diversity of languages and lived
experiences across Turtle Island\, while poetry offers a space where thes
 e voices can meet\, intersect\, and resonate.\n\nThrough close examination
of multilingual poems and the craft choices behind them\, participants wi
ll revise and refine their own writing while considering how the physical
form of a chapbook can deepen and extend the meaning of their work.\n\nBy
the end of the workshop\, each participant will leave with a selection of
favourite chapbooks from the sample collection\, as well as their own hand
made chapbook—folded\, sewn\, collaged\, and shaped according to their u
nique creative vision—containing an original poem.\n\nWriter-in-Residenc
 e\n\nKevin Spenst (he/him) is a poet\, editor\, performer\, musician\, and
chapbook artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores the intersectio
ns of language\, community\, and creative expression. He is the author of
four full-length poetry collections and nineteen chapbooks. His forthcomin
 g book\, Stanley Park Manor: A Collective History (Anvil Press\, fall 2026
)\, brings together lyric essays\, neighbour interviews\, and personal nar
ratives to create a layered portrait of place and community. He is also a
Poetry Mentor with The Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University\, loc
ated on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, S
 ḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nati
