DESCRIPTION:Walk through East Tampa with Fred Hearns\, curator of Black hi
 story at the Tampa Bay History Center and Tampa’s Black History Museum\,
  and hear the stories of the people who built College Hill. \nDuring this 
 90-minute guided tour\, Hearns shares the history of one of Tampa’s olde
 st Black communities. In the late 1800s\, Black families began purchasing 
 lots in the area after being promised that a college for Black students wo
 uld be built nearby. The college never opened\, but the community continue
 d to grow. By the late 1920s\, more than 5\,000 Black residents called Col
 lege Hill home. \nTour stops include the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Libr
 ary\, home to the Florida Sentinel Bulletin special collection\; Belmont H
 eights Estates\; Memorial Park Cemetery\, established in 1923 and the fina
 l resting place of many of Tampa’s Black leaders\; and Belmont Heights L
 ittle League\, where future Major League Baseball stars Dwight “Doc” G
 ooden and Gary Sheffield learned to play. \nThe quarter-mile (eight city b
 locks) tour follows public sidewalks and brick streets. Tours are limited

 for public-facing roles throughout the History Center\, including gallery

 itor engagement. Participants will learn how to share exhibit content\, le

 xplore the people\, places and events that shaped our region. \nThis train

  Ernest Boger becoming the university’s first Black student in September

 rs\, will reflect on the experiences of Black students at USF during the 1
 960s\, followed by The Village Speaks\, a roundtable discussion with USF a

 AICP\, a History Center-trained guide and USF professor who teaches urban 
 planning history. Her courses examine industrialization\, mutual aid socie
 ties\, highway development\, suburbanization and downtown revitalization\,
  all central to Ybor City’s development.  \nDuring this 90-minute tour\
 , Van connects her academic expertise with the cigar factories\, social cl
 ubs\, brick streets and landmark buildings along the route. Guests will le
 arn how Ybor developed as a central hub of the United States’ cigar indu
 stry and how it emerged as a rare multi-ethnic and multi-racial industrial
  community in the Deep South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Va
 n also provides her urban planning expertise to share the story of Ybor’
 s post-war transformations and the processes shaping Ybor today. \nLocal g
 uests learn how major developments in American urban history unfolded clos
 e to home. Visitors from outside Tampa will gain a clear understanding of 
 how Ybor became one of the city’s most distinctive historic districts. \

 Cigar City and discover how Tampa became one of the world’s leading ciga
 r manufacturing centers. Amy connects Henry B. Plant’s transportation ne
 twork with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how indus
 try and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of
  Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learni
 ng about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and co
 nnections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s histori
 c cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life i
 nside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s develo
 pment and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum S
 tate Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum.
  Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct p
 erspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybo
 r’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-l
 ed gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs a
 nd other historical materials from the History Center’s collections whil
 e hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and i
 ndustries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experie
 nced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what the
 y reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. For first-time visi
 tors\, a gallery tour provides a focused introduction to the History Cente
 r’s collections and a strong starting point for exploring the galleries.
