DESCRIPTION:Marking the midpoint between June 1 and November 30 and the hi
storical peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season\, September serves as a tim
ely reminder for the Tampa Bay region to assess their level of preparednes
s and make necessary updates to their emergency plans. Residents and busin
esses are encouraged to finalize their disaster plans and take advantage o
f preparedness resources this month.  Whether preparing on your own\, wit
h your family or for your organization or business\, it is important to ta
ke time now to solidify your disaster plan by following the road to hurric
ane preparedness. Here are the top tips from the Florida Division of Emerg
ency Management (FDEM) for staying hurricane ready this season and beyond.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 each y
ear\, with historical activity typically peaking in September. Over the la
st 60 years\, the Atlantic Basin has recorded at least one named storm dur
ing the month of September each year\, underscoring the importance of rema
ining prepared even when the earlier months of hurricane season have been
 relatively quiet (www.floridadisaster.org). \n \n \n \n
 					\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dis
aster Preparedness Sales Tax Exemption \n \n \n \n As
of July 1\, 2025\, many disaster preparedness supplies\, including batteri
es\, fire extinguishers and portable generators\, are permanently exempt f
rom Florida sales tax. Floridians can take advantage of this year-round ex
emption when building or restocking their disaster supply kits. Visit Flo
ridaDisaster.org/TaxFree for a comprehensive list of eligible items.

 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Know your evacuation zon
e and understand your home’s ability to withstand potential storm condit
ions. Based on these factors\, determine whether you may be able to shelte
r in place or will need to evacuate if instructed by local officials. Iden
tify where you would go ahead of time\, such as the home of family or frie
nds or a local shelter. To identify your evacuation zone\, visit the websi

 				\n \n \n \n \n Make a Pl
 an \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Don’t wait until a disaster threatens to make a plan. Develo
p a disaster plan with everyone in your household\, including how you will
communicate during an emergency and where you will meet if you become sep
arated. Business owners should also have a business continuity plan and pr
ocedures for communicating with employees before\, during and after a disa
ster. To create a customized preparedness plan for your household or busin
 ess\, visit the website below: \n \n \n FloridaMa

 								Build a Kit \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 \n \n \n Build a disaster supply kit with enough food\
, water\, medications and other essential supplies for your household for
up to seven days. Consider the needs of everyone in your household\, inclu
ding children\, older adults\, individuals with disabilities and pets. Vis
it the website below for a comprehensive disaster supply checklist. \

 						\n \n \n \n Halfway Full is Halfway Th
 ere \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least halfway full or your
electric vehicle at least halfway charged throughout hurricane season. Sto
rm preparation and evacuation orders can lead to increased demand at gas s
tations and charging locations. Maintaining at least half a tank or charge
can help ensure you are ready to evacuate quickly if necessary. Visit the

\n Evacuate Tens of Miles\, Not Hundreds (If Necessary)
 			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
If you are ordered to evacuate\, you may not need to travel hundreds
of miles to reach safety. In many cases\, moving tens of miles inland\, t
o higher ground or outside an evacuation zone may be enough to get out of
harm’s way. Always follow evacuation orders and guidance from local offi
cials. Sign up for local emergency alerts through AlertFlorida\, and visit
your county's local emergency management site at the link below for infor
 mation about shelters. \n \n \n FloridaDisaster.o

 		\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \
n \n If you or someone in your household requires 24-hour care
or relies on electricity for medical needs\, register with Florida’s Sp
ecial Needs Registry. Registering in advance helps local emergency managem
ent officials better understand and plan for community needs before\, duri
ng and after a disaster. Preparedness looks different for every business\,
organization\, and household\, but every Floridian can take steps now to
become more resilient. Whether it is signing up for local alerts\, packing
essential supplies for your children\, checking your evacuation zone or i
dentifying a safe place to go\, preparing before a storm is on the horizon
is always better than waiting until it arrives. \n \n \n

communicate during an emergency and where you will meet if you become sep
arated. Business owners should also have a business continuity plan and pr

 			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
If you are ordered to evacuate\, you may not need to travel hundreds
of miles to reach safety. In many cases\, moving tens of miles inland\, t
o higher ground or outside an evacuation zone may be enough to get out of
harm’s way. Always follow evacuation orders and guidance from local offi
cials. Sign up for local emergency alerts through AlertFlorida\, and visit
your county's local emergency management site at the link below for infor

n \n If you or someone in your household requires 24-hour care
or relies on electricity for medical needs\, register with Florida’s Sp
ecial Needs Registry.
