DESCRIPTION:September 1 - December 11\, 2026\n\nReclaimed: The Art of Reco
logy presents a survey of 33 artists who were selected to participate in R
 ecology’s Artist-in-Residence program\, which began in 1990. Armed with
safety gear and a shopping cart\, each of these artists have scavenging pr
ivileges in the Public Reuse and Recycling Area—what most artists refer
to as “The Big Store”—to recycle and reclaim the discarded waste as
imagined art objects. Through introspective\, playful\, and highly origina

DESCRIPTION:Choices is a therapeutically supported peer group for drugs\,
alcohol and other life-interfering behaviors.\n\nThis is a process therapy
group intended for students who need a space to reflect on behaviors that
cause harm or negatively impact their lives. In high-stress\, high-compet
ition environments\, it can be easy to develop coping behaviors to get by\
, but some behaviors also cause problems. These behaviors can be substance
or alcohol use\, gambling or risk-taking behaviors\, including sexual act
ivities. Other students might be unable to manage time they spend online w
ith social media or gaming. Perhaps friends and loved ones have been menti
oning concerns about these behaviors\, or the students themselves have fee
lings of shame or guilt about them\, but they’re struggling with how to
reduce engaging in the behaviors.\n\nWhile the group is supported by two c
ounselors\, the goal is to have students bring their own struggles\, succe
sses and insights into group to better explore what the current generation
of Syracuse University students are experiencing.\n\nGroup Time: Thursday
s from 3:30-5 p.m.Start Date: Oct. 8This group is open to new members thro

for this group. Students are highly recommended to attend four (4) consecu

DESCRIPTION:This collection of dolls tells an important story about Latina
representation and cultural diversity. María Félix\, Peruvian cultural
traditions\, Ellen Ochoa and Celia Cruz represent different countries\, ba
ckgrounds\, professions and experiences. They demonstrate that there is no
single way to be Latina or to contribute to Latino culture.\n\nDolls serv
e as powerful educational tools because they allow young people to see sci
 entists\, astronauts\, musicians\, actresses\, cultural figures and women
from different Latin American backgrounds represented in a familiar and ac
cessible form. Representation matters: when children see people who look l
ike them—or who share their cultural heritage—accomplishing extraordin
ary things\, they can more easily imagine those possibilities for themselv
es.\n\nIn celebration of Latine Heritage Month\, Bird Library hosts select
ions from the collection of Gerardo T Cummings\, Spanish instructor with t

DESCRIPTION:When contemplating nothingness\, the mind invariably wanders t
o things both very large and very small. The beginning of everything\, the
space between things\, places and thoughts gone missing into voids and em
ptiness. An exhibit focusing on such things may seem null and void at its
very outset.\n\nAlthough nothing is nothing by nature\, by juxtaposing not
hing with something\, nothing obtains meaning. For what is more useful tha
n the zero in math\, more practical than a vacuum cleaner\, or more worthy
of compilation than the rock-filled void that defines the space left by t
he antediluvian mind? Voids and spaces help define our daily lives.\n\nWhe
ther we come from something or nothing (and end at the same location) is o
pen to debate\; it's the journey where meaning sits. This exhibit covers a
lot of nothing\, both absolute and intimate. From the days of Aristotle a
nd the horror vacui of the ancients to the culinary void that is the donut
hole\, we hope to show that nothing's a big deal\, that sharing nothing i
s really saying something.\n\nThe exhibit explores the topic of nothing in
eight sections.\n\nCurated by Stephen Singer and Abagail Traska.\n\nNote:

DESCRIPTION:Since the country’s founding\, the American people have shap
ed—and continue to shape—a more just and equitable future for current
and future generations. For decades\, Syracuse University Libraries’ Spe
cial Collections Research Center (SCRC) has collected materials related to
histories of activism and social reform in America that illustrate how ad
vancements in rights were made possible by those who came before. This tir
eless pursuit and ongoing work of individuals and collective groups who ha
ve come together to push for change—not always seen during their lifetim
es—in the face of extraordinary challenges and circumstances is document
ed within this exhibition. \n\nVisitors can explore traces of resistance a
nd perseverance in the form of publications\, posters\, protest signs\, ph
otographs\, demands\, newsletters\, and more that document the critical ro
le of activism in challenging injustice and securing greater freedoms for
all. \n\nThe exhibition was curated by Courtney Hicks\, SCRC Lead Curator
and Curator of Plastics and Historical Artifacts\, Jana Rosinski\, SCRC In
struction and Education Librarian\, and Lindy Smith\, SCRC Assistant Direc
 tor.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christine McWhorter is an assistant professor of broadcast
journalism in the Department of Media\, Journalism\, and Film at Howard U
niversity’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications. Her teaching centers
on storytelling\, critical thinking and ethical reporting\, and she prepar
es students to work confidently across digital\, broadcast and social plat
forms. Her research focuses on Critical Race Media Literacy\, with particu
lar attention to how race\, power and storytelling intersect in news\, ent
ertainment and digital spaces. She examines how media systems normalize ra
cial inequity and how communities create their own narratives in response.
Her first book\, "Building Critical Race Media Literacy: Countering the N
arrative" (Routledge\, 2025)\, connects theory\, history and lived experie
nce to give readers concrete tools for consuming and producing media with
a racial justice lens.\n\n \n\nMedia exercises power over how audiences un
derstand race through three interlocking channels: who controls the means
of telling\, what repeated portrayal does to belief\, and why certain inte
rpretations come to feel like common sense rather than construction. These
channels are usually studied separately\, media effects\, critical and cu
ltural studies\, and political economy\, rather than as the connected chai
n they form in practice. Drawing on her recent book\, this talk introduces
Critical Race Media Literacy (CRML)\, tracing how ownership shapes produc
tion\, production shapes belief and belief hardens into frames that no lon
ger register as frames. The talk offers a unified method for studying race
as a structural\, rather than incidental\, feature of media systems.

DESCRIPTION:The Latin America Policy Process Research Initiative (LAPPRI)
aims to advance established and emerging policy process theories in order
to enhance scholarly understanding of policymaking in Latin America. The L
APPRI Research Seminar Series features scholars from around the world dedi
cated to researching policy process dynamics across the region.\n\n\nPrese
nter: Pablo Sanabria-Pulido (Universidad Icesi)\n\nTitle: The People Probl
em: Human Capital\, Public Management\, and the Limits of Policy Analysis
in Latin America\n\nAbstract: Public policy analysis in Latin America has
systematically underweighted\, or even ignored\, the human factor. This pa
per argues that the behaviors\, roles and processes of analysts\, bureaucr
ats\, and public managers are not merely instruments of policy processes b
ut a central variable that explains persistent gaps between policy design
and implementation outcomes. \n\nClassical frameworks\, developed largely
in high-capacity state contexts\, fail to account for the informality\, po
liticization\, and discretion that define Latin American administrative re
alities. This work makes three contributions. It develops a conceptually i
ntegrated framework connecting human capital formation\, public employment
design\, and policy outcomes in a regionally grounded perspective. It the
n examines how politicization and patronage produce organizational consequ
ences that directly undermine implementation capacity. Finally\, it propos
es a reform and research agenda organized around three axes: professionali
zing the policy analyst role in academic and institutional settings\, desi
gning public employment arrangements aligned with regional political-admin
istrative trajectories\, and building collaborative data ecosystems to gen
erate cumulative comparative evidence on how bureaucratic talent shapes po
 licy results.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is pleased to welcome Shri Kulkarni\
, George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at the C
alifornia Institute of Technology\, for his talk titled\, "The Seasons of
Helium."\n\nS. R. Kulkarni is the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronom
y and Planetary Sciences at Caltech\, where he has worked since 1985. A pi
oneering astronomer\, he has made major contributions to the discovery of
the first millisecond pulsar and brown dwarfs\, helped establish the cosmo
logical origin of gamma-ray bursts\, and showed that many fast radio burst
s (FRBs) come from magnetars. He also founded major sky-survey projects su
ch as the Palomar Transient Factory and the Zwicky Transient Facility. Thr
oughout his career\, he has mentored dozens of graduate students and postd
octoral researchers and received numerous prestigious awards\, including t
he Shaw Prize and the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.\n\nAbs
tract: SPHEREx\, a recently launched astronomy mission\, detected a bright
1.083 micron emission feature in the commissioning data. The PI group att
ributed this feature to the He I 1.0833 micron triplet line. In this semin
ar\, I review the physics and aeronomy of this well-known line of atmosphe
ric origin. SPHEREx is in a dawn-dusk sun-synchronous polar orbit\, circli
ng the earth nearly 15 times a day and observing close to the terminator p
lane. With a height of 650 km\, SPHEREx is located in the upper thermosphe
re that is dominated by atomic oxygen and helium. The He I line is a resul
t of resonance scattering of solar photons by metastable helium atoms. It
appears that SPHEREx has the capacity to provide a rich dataset (global\,
daily and 2-minute cadence) of the column density of metastable helium in
the upper thermosphere. As an example of this assertion\, with data from j
ust one orbit\, the winter helium bulge was readily seen. Metastable heliu
m should be of interest to astronomers since it provides a handle on study
ing the exosphere of earth. Helium in the thermosphere is of considerable
interest to operators of low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites\, since drag
in the thermosphere is the primary cause of the decay of these satellites.
SPHEREx\, along with on-going ground-based studies (passive NIR spectrosc
opy\, lidar\, incoherent scatter radar)\, is poised to contribute to this
 topic.
