DESCRIPTION:Choices is a therapeutically supported peer group for drugs\,
alcohol and other life-interfering behaviors.\n\nThis is a process therapy
group intended for students who need a space to reflect on behaviors that
cause harm or negatively impact their lives. In high-stress\, high-compet
ition environments\, it can be easy to develop coping behaviors to get by\
, but some behaviors also cause problems. These behaviors can be substance
or alcohol use\, gambling or risk-taking behaviors\, including sexual act
ivities. Other students might be unable to manage time they spend online w
ith social media or gaming. Perhaps friends and loved ones have been menti
oning concerns about these behaviors\, or the students themselves have fee
lings of shame or guilt about them\, but they’re struggling with how to
reduce engaging in the behaviors.\n\nWhile the group is supported by two c
ounselors\, the goal is to have students bring their own struggles\, succe
sses and insights into group to better explore what the current generation
of Syracuse University students are experiencing.\n\nGroup Time: Thursday

ike them—or who share their cultural heritage—accomplishing extraordin
ary things\, they can more easily imagine those possibilities for themselv

DESCRIPTION:When contemplating nothingness\, the mind invariably wanders t
o things both very large and very small. The beginning of everything\, the
space between things\, places and thoughts gone missing into voids and em
ptiness. An exhibit focusing on such things may seem null and void at its
very outset.\n\nAlthough nothing is nothing by nature\, by juxtaposing not
hing with something\, nothing obtains meaning. For what is more useful tha
n the zero in math\, more practical than a vacuum cleaner\, or more worthy
of compilation than the rock-filled void that defines the space left by t
he antediluvian mind? Voids and spaces help define our daily lives.\n\nWhe
ther we come from something or nothing (and end at the same location) is o
pen to debate\; it's the journey where meaning sits. This exhibit covers a
lot of nothing\, both absolute and intimate. From the days of Aristotle a
nd the horror vacui of the ancients to the culinary void that is the donut
hole\, we hope to show that nothing's a big deal\, that sharing nothing i
s really saying something.\n\nThe exhibit explores the topic of nothing in
eight sections.\n\nCurated by Stephen Singer and Abagail Traska.\n\nNote:
this exhibit features a free button offer!

DESCRIPTION:Since the country’s founding\, the American people have shap
ed—and continue to shape—a more just and equitable future for current
and future generations. For decades\, Syracuse University Libraries’ Spe
cial Collections Research Center (SCRC) has collected materials related to
histories of activism and social reform in America that illustrate how ad
vancements in rights were made possible by those who came before. This tir
eless pursuit and ongoing work of individuals and collective groups who ha
ve come together to push for change—not always seen during their lifetim
es—in the face of extraordinary challenges and circumstances is document
ed within this exhibition. \n\nVisitors can explore traces of resistance a
nd perseverance in the form of publications\, posters\, protest signs\, ph
otographs\, demands\, newsletters\, and more that document the critical ro
le of activism in challenging injustice and securing greater freedoms for
all. \n\nThe exhibition was curated by Courtney Hicks\, SCRC Lead Curator
and Curator of Plastics and Historical Artifacts\, Jana Rosinski\, SCRC In

DESCRIPTION:Biological treatment is fundamental to wastewater management a
nd has been used for decades\, primarily for the removal of organic carbon
and nutrients. These same processes are now expected to control contamina
nts they were not initially designed for\, including human enteric viruses
and antimicrobial resistance. However\, microbial contaminants are diffic
ult to track through conventional bulk performance measurements\, so molec
ular methods have become a promising approach for monitoring them. This ta
lk presents two studies that use molecular tools to address different trea
tment questions at different scales. The first evaluates virus removal mec
hanisms at two full-scale facilities\, one using conventional activated sl
udge and the other lagoons. Molecular and conventional culture assays prod
uced different log reduction values\, and spatial sampling within each tre
atment train explained the discrepancy: removal was solids-associated in t
he activated sludge system and decay-dominant in the lagoons. The second s
tudy asks how redox conditions shape antimicrobial resistance\, applying m
etagenomic sequencing to parallel bench-scale aerobic and anaerobic membra
ne bioreactors under stepwise antibiotic loading. Separating intracellular
from extracellular DNA in the effluent showed that the two reactors relea
sed resistance in different forms. The aerobic reactor discharged resistan
ce genes inside intact cells\, while the anaerobic reactor released the sa
me genes as cell-free DNA\, a distinction that total gene abundance alone
would obscure. Redox conditions altered not only how many antimicrobial re
sistance genes were discharged but also the form in which they were releas
ed\, and therefore the risk they carried. Together\, these studies illustr
ate how molecular methods\, interpreted alongside process behavior\, can s
upport biological contaminant management in water reuse and resource recov
ery systems.\n\n \n\nDr. Phillip Wang is an environmental engineer and mic
robiologist whose research examines how wastewater treatment processes con
trol pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. He holds a Ph.D. in Environme
ntal Engineering from the University of Southern California\, along with a
n M.A. in Molecular Biology and a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biolo
gy from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Following his postdocto
ral appointment at the Southern Nevada Water Authority\, he continues to l
ead SNWA-affiliated research on pathogen surveillance in engineered water
systems. He has published 18 peer-reviewed papers\, including molecular wo
rk at three scales: antimicrobial resistance risks in laboratory-scale bio
reactors\, virus removal at full-scale treatment plants to support state r
egulations for turning wastewater into drinking water\, and SARS-CoV-2 tra
cking through wastewater surveillance in Los Angeles County.

DESCRIPTION:The Community Geography Lecture Series presents “Resourcing
Relationships for Repair and the Reparative: Lessons learned from the Comm
unity-Soil-Air-Water learning ecosystem in Atlanta\, Georgia.” This lect
ure\, presented by Katherine Hankins of Georgia State University\, is spon
sored by the Community Geography program. \n\nAs communities fighting for
environmental justice respond to escalating threats from climate change a
nd prolonged accumulations of disproportionate environmental harms\, new m
odels of partnership and infrastructures for effecting change are necessar
y to disrupt well-worn patterns of marginalization and abandonment that ha
ve produced highly segregated\, deeply unjust\, and environmentally uneven
urban areas. \n\nWe argue that just transitions toward environmental jus
tice require building infrastructures of care and repair. We share lesson
s learned from the Community-Soil-Air-Water (CSAW) learning ecosystem work
ing to transform the conduct of environmental science disciplines to achie
ve community-engaged and community-driven collaboration justice for fencel
 ine communities in Atlanta.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Philosophy is excited to welcome Thomas Hofw
eber (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) to deliver this year's
Alston Lecture. Hofweber will deliver a talk entitled\, "The Metaphysical
Significance of Humanity."\n\nAbstract: What is the significance of humani
ty in the world overall? It is natural to distinguish two ways to take thi
s question. One concerns the value of humanity. Do human beings have speci
al value or worth\, distinct from and possibly higher than other objects a
nd creatures? But this is not the only way of thinking about our possible
significance. There is also another way\, which concerns what we can call
our metaphysical significance: our place in the overall metaphysical story
of the world. It is natural to think that we have no metaphysical signifi
cance unless there is a close connection between human beings and God. Non
etheless\, I will argue that we might be metaphysically central to all of
reality directly and independently to any issues tied to God. The hard par
t is to make sense of the idea that merely biological creatures that arose
fairly recently are nonetheless by themselves and directly metaphysically
central to all of reality. I will aim to show this by outlining an argume
nt for an intimate connection between our conceptual thought and reality a
 s the totality of facts.

Perhaps friends and loved ones have been menti
oning concerns about these behaviors\, or the students themselves have fee
lings of shame or guilt about them\, but they’re struggling with how to
reduce engaging in the behaviors.\n\nWhile the group is supported by two c
ounselors\, the goal is to have students bring their own struggles\, succe
sses and insights into group to better explore what the current generation
of Syracuse University students are experiencing.\n\nGroup Time: Thursday
s from 3:30-5 p.m.Start Date: Oct. 8This group is open to new members thro

for this group. Students are highly recommended to attend four (4) consecu

DESCRIPTION:This collection of dolls tells an important story about Latina
representation and cultural diversity. María Félix\, Peruvian cultural
traditions\, Ellen Ochoa and Celia Cruz represent different countries\, ba
ckgrounds\, professions and experiences. They demonstrate that there is no
single way to be Latina or to contribute to Latino culture.\n\nDolls serv
e as powerful educational tools because they allow young people to see sci
 entists\, astronauts\, musicians\, actresses\, cultural figures and women
from different Latin American backgrounds represented in a familiar and ac
cessible form. Representation matters: when children see people who look l
ike them—or who share their cultural heritage—accomplishing extraordin
ary things\, they can more easily imagine those possibilities for themselv
es.\n\nIn celebration of Latine Heritage Month\, Bird Library hosts select
ions from the collection of Gerardo T Cummings\, Spanish instructor with t
he Languages\, Literatures\, and Linguistics department.\n\nCurated by Ste
 phen Singer and Abagail Traska.

DESCRIPTION:Syracuse University Libraries' Special Collections Research Ce
nter (SCRC) is offering public tours of the current exhibition\, We Demand
: A Legacy of Activism in America. The tours will be led by two of the cur
ators of the exhibition\, Jana Rosinski\, SCRC Instruction and Education L
ibrarian\, and Lindy Smith\, SCRC Assistant Director.\n\nSince this countr
y’s founding\, the American people have shaped—and continue to shape
—a more just and equitable future. For decades\, Syracuse University Lib
raries’ Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) has collected materia
ls related to histories of activism and social reform in America that illu
strate how advancements in rights were made possible by those who came bef
ore. This tireless pursuit and ongoing work of individuals and collective
groups who have come together to push for change—not always seen during
their lifetimes—in the face of extraordinary challenges and circumstance
s are documented within this exhibition. Traces of resistance and persever
ance in the form of posters\, protest signs\, photographs\, demands\, news
letters\, and more represent the critical role of activism in challenging
injustice and securing greater freedoms in the United States. We invite yo
u to consider which legacies of activism have shaped your own experiences\
, what movements and causes resonate with you\, and which stories remain t
o be told.\n\nTours are free and open to the public. Spots are limited\, s
o registration is required. REGISTER HERE\n\nThe exhibition will be on vie

llery through the end of December 2026.\n\nIf you require an accommodation
