DESCRIPTION:THE ROLE OF RHEOLOGY IN GOVERNING ICE SHEET DYNAMICS \n\n \n
\nABSTRACT:\nMass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet largely occurs due t
o the\nviscous ice flow of glaciers from the interior of ice sheets toward
s\nthe ocean. The rate of flow to the ocean is governed by ice viscosity\,
\nwhich in turn depends on microphysical and macrophysical processes.\nWhi
le increasing amounts of evidence suggest that ice viscosity varies\nsigni
ficantly in space and time in the Antarctic Ice Sheet\, current\nice sheet
models treat ice viscosity as a fixed\, empirically-derived\nvalue. In th
is talk\, I first explore the implications of neglecting\nthis complexity
in ice viscosity. I demonstrate using simple\,\ntheoretical models that ic
e rheology may play a significant role in\ngoverning transient ice sheet d
ynamics and may alter the stability\nportrait of marine ice sheets. I furt
her show that in the current\nconfiguration of the Antarctic Ice Sheet\, r
heology likely plays a\nsubstantial role in governing the force balance\,
thereby setting the\nflow speed. I then present a bulk parameterization me
thod for\nincorporating ice crystal-scale processes into a model for ice\n
viscosity and demonstrate that this provides a way of parameterizing\nthe
effect of varying flow conditions on future ice sheet behavior.\nFinally\,
I then show first steps towards a formal multi-scale ice\nviscosity model
implemented using a neural emulator of an ice\nmicrophysics model\, which
provides a path forward for formally\nrepresenting crystal-scale variabil
ity in ice viscosity in large-scale\nice sheet models.\n\nHost: Dougal Han
