  commitment to community education through a new literacy initiative aimed

 unity Matters Grant\, enhances the department’s monthly Fire Safety Stor
 y Time held at Fire Station 3.14 at the Discovery Center Springfield.\nFir
 efighters will begin providing a free book to every household with a child
  in attendance – an effort designed to reinforce key lessons beyond the 
 classroom and into the home. Each book is carefully selected to highlight 
 themes such as fire safety\, good citizenship and the importance of readin
 g.\nThe initiative is funded through a $4\,000 Community Matters Grant awa
 rded to the Springfield Fire Department in February. The funding allows th
 e department to supply books to children who participate in the interactiv
 e educational sessions\, ensuring that families leave not only with knowle
 dge\, but also with tools to continue learning together.\n“This partners
 hip allows us to extend our mission beyond emergency response and into pre
 vention and education\,” said Cassie Melvin of the Springfield Fire Depa
 rtment. “By combining fire safety messaging with literacy\, we’re help
 ing build safer\, more informed households while also encouraging a lifelo
 ng love of reading.”\nFire Safety Story Time is a recurring monthly even
 t hosted at the Discovery Center\, where firefighters engage children thro

  September 19 at 7:30 pm as she shares her journey with us\, reads excerpt
 s from her work\, and signs copies of her books. This is a free event but 
 seating is limited and will be available on a first come\, first served ba
 sis. We look forward to seeing you!\n\n"Patty Prewitt went to prison in 19
 86 for a murder she did not commit. She and her supporters fought for just
 ice every day of her incarceration. Governor Parson freed her on December 
 20\, 2024. She hit the ground running. Her first memoir\, Trying to Catch 
 Lightning in a Jar\, chronicling the first 20 years of her incarceration\,
  was published just months later. In December\, she completed her bachelor
 ’s at Washington University St. Louis\, and this spring she published he
 r second memoir\, Catching Lightning\, about the second half of her impris
 onment and release. She has also published a children’s book\, A Little 
 Person Like You Whose Mommy Goes to Prison. Patty is currently working on 
 two poetry books and a Spanish translation of her children’s book."

  illness\, and loss. Written after lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri lost
  his wife to ovarian cancer\, the piece reflects a reality that has touche
 d nearly every family. \nPresented in partnership with GYN Cancers Allianc
 e (GYNCA) during National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month\, this concer
 t acknowledges grief as a natural part of life while offering music as a v
 ehicle for healing\, remembrance\, and connection. In addition to ticket s
 ales\, guests will be invited to make a freewill offering benefiting GYNCA
  and its mission to support individuals and families impacted by gynecolog
 ic cancers in the Ozarks. \nWe close with “We Remember Them” by Susan 
 LaBarr\, a moving work by the Springfield-based composer that reminds us r
