DESCRIPTION:First Friday is more than an evening arts event. It is an oppo
rtunity for downtown businesses to benefit from increased foot traffic\, c
onnect with new customers and become part of a larger downtown experience.
Customers Are Already Coming Downtown First Friday brings people downtown
specifically to explore\, shop\, dine and experience something new. Downt
own Spokane promotes First Friday from 5–8 p.m.\, with galleries\, retai
lers and restaurants participating throughout the downtown core. Research
also supports the broader connection between special events and retail act
ivity. A 2026 study published in the Journal of Retailing\, examining even
ts in two cities\, found that retail-area visits increased an average of 5
.9% during events\, with retail-focused events producing an even larger in
crease. The study also found no evidence of a corresponding decline in vis
its immediately before or after the events studied. For businesses\, the o
pportunity is simple: when people are already downtown\, give them a reaso
n to walk through your door. October 2 Is a Particularly Big OpportunityTh
is year’s First Friday falls on October 2\, the night of Terrain 17. Ter
rain describes its annual event as the Inland Northwest’s largest multim
edia art and music event. The free main event runs from 5 p.m. to midnight
and features work by 523 artists\, along with music\, live painting and p
erformances\, food trucks\, a photo booth and beverages. The scale is sign
 ificant. In 2025\, Terrain reported 10\,044 attendees\, 483 participating
artists\, more than $86\,000 in art sales and visitors from as far away as
California\, Nevada\, New Mexico and Virginia. That makes October 2 one o
f the strongest First Friday opportunities of the year for businesses that
can extend their hours and participate in the evening. It Shows Your Supp
ort for DowntownStaying open for First Friday signals that your business i
s part of the downtown community. Customers aren’t just looking for a s
ingle destination. They’re walking between galleries\, shops\, restauran
ts\, bars and other experiences. When more businesses participate\, the en
tire district becomes more active and inviting. Downtown Spokane’s First
Friday program is specifically designed around this model\, with retailer
s and restaurants joining galleries and artists to create a larger downtow
n experience. You don’t have to host a major event. Simply being open\,
welcoming customers and offering something special can make your business
part of the experience. It Helps People Find YouDowntown Spokane promotes
First Friday through its website and social channels\, giving participatin
g businesses an opportunity to be included in the monthly event promotion.
The key is to give people a reason to choose your business. How to Attrac

thing exclusive to the evening\, such as a featured menu item\, drink\, pr
oduct or experience. Run a Discount or Promotion: A limited-time offer ca

own. Consider a percentage discount\, complimentary item or special bundle
. Host Your Own First Friday Event: Consider an artist reception\, live m

activation can give customers a reason to visit. Partner With a Local Arti
st or Maker: Feature an artist’s work\, invite a maker for a pop-up or
create an interactive experience that connects your business with Spokane
’s creative community. Stay Open Later: If your normal Friday hours end
before 8 p.m.\, consider extending them specifically for First Friday. On
October 2\, consider staying open even later to take advantage of the ext
ended activity surrounding Terrain. Make It Easy to Find You: Use window
signage\, sidewalk messaging and social media to let people know you’re
participating. Make sure your First Friday event or promotion is submitted
to the Downtown Spokane Partnership event calendar so it can be included
in First Friday promotion. Make First Friday Work for Your BusinessYou don

e leading composers of the old Soviet Union and worked comfortably for his
entire career in the restrictive atmosphere of Soviet music. Kabalevsky
’s musical style was never even remotely “modernist” and suited perf
ectly the ideal that music should be uplifting and in service of the peopl
 e. A loyal member of the Communist Party\, he enthusiastically supported S
oviet musical policies and held several important political positions and
editorships. (Unlike his contemporaries\, Shostakovich and Prokofiev\, he
never ran into trouble with musical authorities.) Interested in the cause
of education\, Kabalevsky also helped to formulate the Soviet music educat
ion system\; he wrote dozens of works for children’s choir and\, later i
n his career\, influential books on teaching music. As a composer\, he was
also known for his six operas—rarely produced today\, but nearly all we
re very successful in the Soviet Union.  His first opera\, Colas Breugnon
\, was based upon a 1919 novel by Romain Rolland in the form of reminiscen
 ces of a 16th-century Burgundian peasant\, looking back on a life well-liv
ed and enjoyed with gusto. Rolland granted Kabalevsky the rights to use th
e novel but was disappointed by how it was turned into a libretto. Kabalev
sky worked over a span of three decades revising the opera\, eventually pr
emiering a new version in 1970 that won him the prestigious Lenin Prize\,
though its lively 1938 overture remained unchanged. \nWhat You’ll Hear\n
Though the opera is seldom heard in America\, the brief Colas Breugnon Ove
rture has long been a favorite concert-opener. It is a musical portrait of
the opera’s irrepressible main character\, beginning with a flourish an
d launching immediately into a manic\, strongly accented main theme. Kabal
evsky introduces a second\, more weighty idea\, and a slightly more seriou
s central section. Towards the end\, there is a wry little country dance e
pisode before the lively coda. \n  \nThis work\, the first piano concerto
published by an American woman\, was written by the remarkable Amy Beach.
Beach faced career restrictions imposed by her parents\, her husband\, an
d society at large. Yet in her own time\, she became one of America’s mo
st celebrated early 20th-century composers.  \nAmy Beach\nBorn: September
  5\, 1867\, Henniker\, New Hampshire.\nDied: December 27\, 1944. New York
 City.  \nPiano Concerto in C-sharp minor\, Op. 45  \n\nComposed: 1898-99
.\nPremiere: April 7\, 1900\, the composer as soloist with the Boston Symp
 hony Orchestra\, conducted by Wilhem Gericke.\nDuration: 27:00. \n\nBackg
round\nAmy Beach was born Amy Marcy Cheney\, the only child of an upper-cl
ass New Hampshire family. Phenomenally talented even as a child\, she was
a piano prodigy with perfect pitch who could improvise countermelodies at
age two. She was composing waltzes for piano at age four. She continued pi
ano studies\, though her parents strongly discouraged a professional caree
r in music. Nevertheless\, she persisted\, and at age 17\, Amy Cheney made
a high-profile debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, playing Chopin
’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The next year\, she married Dr. Henry Harris Au
brey Beach\, a physician 24 years her senior. At his insistence\, she gave
up private teaching and severely limited her solo performances. However\,
Dr. Beach encouraged her to compose—with the condition that she publish
works under the name “Mrs. H.H.A. Beach”—but he forbade a private t
utor\, and she was largely self-taught in composition. She became one of A
merica’s most best-known composers\, with the successful premiere of her
Mass in E-flat Major in Boston in 1892 and the debut of her “Gaelic”
Symphony in 1896—the first symphony composed and published by an America
n woman. She also was soloist in the premiere of her Piano Concerto in 190
 0. In the meantime\, Beach also published a host of popular smaller works:
chamber music\, sacred and secular music\, choral pieces\, and dozens of
art songs. Following the death of her husband in 1910\, and of her mother
a few months later\, Beach spent the next few years in Germany\, touring a
s a piano soloist under her own name.  (When she returned to America in 1
914\, she also returned to “Mrs. H.H.A. Beach” as a professional name
for the rest of her life.) Beach is unique among American women composers
of the early 20th century in that she was never really forgotten: she was
celebrated throughout her long career\, both as a composer and as a pianis
 t.  \nWhat You’ll Hear\nThough the initial critical reception to the Pi
ano Concerto was chilly\, Beach successfully championed the work in later
performances in Germany and the United States. She described the broad ope
ning movement (Allegro moderato) as “serious in character\, piano and or
chestra vying with each other in the development of the two principal them
es\, of which the second is songlike in character.” The exposition of th
is material is unhurried\, and both themes are developed extensively. The
lush second theme is from one of her songs\, Jeune fille et jeune fleur (1
887)\, a heartbreaking poem about a man who is burying his daughter. The S
cherzo (Perpetuum mobile) [perpetual motion] is based upon a second song\,
Empress of the Night (1891)\, which sets a poem by her husband. Beach not
es that the Scherzo “bears the subtitle perpetuum mobile and consists of
a piquant etude rhythm unbroken throughout the piano part\, set against a
n orchestral background that sings the melody in the stringed instruments.
” The “perpetual motion” is all in the piano part from the original
song—which does indeed sound a bit like a relentless piano etude\, until
it breaks into a cadenza and at the very end\, a series of trills and a j
oyful final flourish. The slow movement (Largo) is based upon another sett
ing of a poem by her husband\, Twilight (1887). In this case\, the turbule
nt original song is transformed into a doleful lament that rises to an imp
assioned peak\, before a quiet transition into the finale. The final movem
ent\, which is marked Allegro con scioltezza (literally\, Allegro “with
ease.”) is a rondo\, with the rather relaxed and flowing main theme intr
oduced by the solo part. This alternates with contrasting material featuri
ng flashy piano writing\, until near the end\, where there is a return of
the third movement’s lament. The lament is abruptly cut short by a brill
iant return of the main idea and a triumphant coda. Several writers have i
nsisted that there is a programmatic element to the concerto: that it repr
esents Beach’s ultimately triumphant struggle against the restrictions i
mposed by her parents and her husband. If this was indeed the case\, she n
ever openly spoke of it.  \n\nProkofiev’s Romeo and Juliet\, based upon
the Shakespeare tragedy\, is among the finest ballet scores of the 20th c
entury. Here we play a set of selections from this great work.  \nSergei
 Prokofiev\nBorn: April 23\, 1891\, Sontsivka\, Ukraine.\nDied: March 5\, 1
 953\, Moscow\, Russia.  \n Selections from Romeo and Juliet\, Suites I a
 nd II\, Opp. 64bis and 64ter  \n\nComposed: 1934-35. \nPremiere: The fir
st concert performance of the full score took place in Moscow in October o
f 1935. The ballet was not staged until 1938\, with a production in Brno\,
Czechoslovakia\, and it was finally performed in Russia in 1940\, with a
production by the Kirov Ballet of Leningrad (St. Petersburg). \nDuration:
ca.38 \n\nBackground\nThere is little doubt these days that Romeo and Ju
liet stands as Prokofiev’s most enduring ballet score. For several years
\, however\, this enormous work was a victim of Soviet artistic politics.
The original idea for this full-scale romantic ballet on Romeo and Juli
et seems to have come from Sergei Radlov\, an influential Leningrad opera
director who had collaborated on Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Or
anges. The “story-ballet” Romeo and Juliet was to have been produced a
t Leningrad’s Academic Theater\, but at the end of 1934 the theater unde
rwent a sudden change of administration. Sergei Kirov\, the Party boss of
Leningrad\, was assassinated\, undoubtedly at Stalin’s order\, and in an
incongruous move\, the Soviet authorities renamed the Academic Theater to
honor this “Socialist martyr.” The new Kirov Theater was tightly cont
rolled by the Soviet artistic bureaucracy\, and Radlov—whose views had l
ong been considered suspiciously avant garde—fell out of favor with the
authorities. Hopes for producing Romeo and Juliet in Leningrad evaporated\
, and Prokofiev began working with the Bolshoi ballet in Moscow.  The sco
re was completed in 1935 and played at the Bolshoi\, whose directors prono
unced the music “undanceable” and canceled the planned production. At
least part of the problem was the story line\, which had been twisted at R
adlov’s suggestion\, so that a suicidal Romeo arrived at Juliet’s tomb
just a minute after she woke up\, thus providing the most famous of all t
ragedies with a happy ending!  \nDespite these disappointments\, Prokofie
v continued to work on the ballet\, fixing the sappy ending\, and extracti
ng two orchestral suites from the score. The concert suites he extracted f
rom the ballet were enormously popular inside the Soviet Union\, and in Eu
rope and the United States. In late 1938\, the Kirov Ballet finally agreed
to produce Romeo and Juliet. Their change of heart seems to have been ins
pired in part by the success of the suites\, but also by some embarrassmen
t over the fact that a non-Soviet company (in Czechoslovakia) had actually
staged the ballet in 1938. The Kirov’s lavish production in 1940 was a
huge success\, and the ballet finally found a secure place in the Russian
repertoire—the critics hailed Romeo and Juliet as a triumph of Soviet ar
t\, and hailed Prokofiev the ballet composer as the first worthy successor
to Tchaikovsky.  \nWhat You’ll Hear\nMovements from the ballet are oft
en mixed and matched\, as at this program. Montagues and Capulets begins w
ith solemn music from Act I of the ballet\, which accompanies the duke as
he forbids fighting between the two families. The main theme\, however\, i
s the accompaniment to the dance of the Capulet knights in Act II—a thre
atening march theme with a ponderous trombone accompaniment. A contrasting
  middle section\, with a lovely flute solo\, is Juliet’s more graceful v
ersion of this same music. Juliet the Young Girl is a portrait of Juliet f
rom Act I—the mood of this music shifts constantly between quick and fli
rtatious to quiet and introspective. Masks depicts Romeo\, Mercutio\, and
Benvolio—all of them masked—sneaking into the Capulets’ ball. It is
a quiet march with appropriately stealthy music from solo clarinet and tru
mpet. Romeo and Juliet: Balcony Scene is unadulterated Romanticism from be
ginning to end.  All is hushed at the beginning as muted violins and harp
set the stage. Much of this quiet but passionate movement is a dialogue\,
with themes representing the two lovers presented alternately in strings
and woodwinds. The music moves towards a gentle peak at the beginning but
subsides to a whisper at the end.   \nThe Dance comes from a peasant fes
tival at the beginning of Act II. Here\, five couples dance to music of un
ceasing motion and wry humor that continues even in a more romantic centra
l passage. Romeo and Juliet Before Parting is wistful and unhurried music\
, accompanying the lovers’ passionate conversation. Here Prokofiev prese
nts a whole series of brief themes but never allows the melancholy mood to
break. The Death of Tybalt is a complete contrast\, dominated by the bras
ses and blazing string lines. Here\, Prokofiev brings together many of the
significant moments of Act II: the duel\, Tybalt’s death\, and the fune
ral procession. Romeo at Juliet’s Grave is the music that accompanies Ro
meo’s visit to the sleeping Juliet\, who he thinks is dead. It opens wit
h astringent string lines and begins a slow funeral procession. It builds
inexorably towards a deep cry of anguish and closes in mood of profound re
signation as Romeo kisses her one last time\, drinks his poison and dies n
ext to Juliet’s sleeping body.    \nCome\, bitter conduct\, com

  by J. Michael Allsen  \nMackenzie Melemed\nRecipient of the 2022 Avery F
isher Career Grant\, 30-year-old American pianist Mackenzie Melemed has em
erged as one of the most distinctive musical voices of his generation\, ad
mired for his nuanced interpretations\, technical finesse\, and deep artis
tic sensibility. Hailed as “an excellent young pianist” by the New Yor
k Times\, Melemed enjoyed an abundance of early stage experience\, with ov
er 500 performances to his name by age 13\, undoubtedly one of the most se
asoned pianists among his peers. Whether in recital\, chamber music\, or o
rchestral settings\, his performances are marked by a desire to communicat
 e\, to reveal\, and to connect—with the score\, with fellow musicians\,
and most of all\, with the audience. \nBorn in Massachusetts\, Melemed beg
an piano studies at age four\, and soon after was performing weekly for se
nior citizens. At the age of five\, he made a national appearance on The R
 osie O’Donnell Show\, and by nine\, he was headlining a 60-show run at t
he Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City\, New Jersey. From nine to thirteen\,
he was invited annually to perform at the White House during the Holiday
Open House celebrations—experiences that proved instrumental in shaping
his identity as a performer. This wide-ranging exposure fostered a deep co
mfort on stage and a natural ease in sharing music. \nMelemed’s artistry
goes beyond performance\, combining music and storytelling into memorable
experiences for both newcomers and seasoned listeners. Through thoughtful
ly curated programs that blend familiar works with rare discoveries\, he c
reates intimate connections with audiences\, sharing insights that illumin
ate the music. His vision extends beyond the concert hall: he aims to spar
k curiosity for lesser-known composers while inspiring future pianists to
explore uncharted repertoire\, gradually expanding what we consider essent
ial to the classical canon. \nA laureate of the 2021 American Pianists Awa
rds and a laureate of the 1st China International Music Competition\, Mele
med was the only pianist to receive an 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant—on
 e of the highest honors bestowed upon young American classical musicians\;
presented by Lincoln Center\, Avery Fisher Career Grants are awarded to A
merican instrumentalists with the largest prospects for a major solo caree

nki Philharmonic\, the Edmonton Symphony\, the Polish Radio Orchestra\, an
d other prominent ensembles\, and has appeared in recital at Carnegie Hall
’s Weill Recital Hall\, as well as at major venues and festivals across
 North America\, Europe\, and Asia. \nMelemed\, a Steinway Artist and a gra
duate of The Juilliard School\, where he studied with Robert McDonald and
Emanuel Ax (BM\, MM\, and Artist Diploma)\, is particularly drawn to music
that lies just off the beaten path. Alongside the classical and romantic
core repertoire\, he has developed a reputation for championing lesser-kno
wn works and rarely-performed piano concerti\, He views commissioning as v
ital to the future of the arts\, a belief reflected in Israeli American co
mposer Avner Dorman’s recent Piano Concerto No.3\, written for Melemed a
nd premiered in Europe and Canada. His upcoming debut album reflects this
balance of tradition and innovation\, pairing works by composers he feels
especially connected to—Bach\, Brahms\, and Liszt—with new commissions
by Sir Stephen Hough (UK)\, Laura Kaminsky (USA)\, and Avner Dorman. \nIn
anticipation of the United States’ 250th anniversary\, he is currently
planning what may well be the largest recital tour of American piano music
in recent history\, Keys Across America — a project rooted in both pers
onal and artistic conviction. \nSince 2020\, Melemed has lived in Finland.
His success following the 2017 Maj Lind Piano Competition\, coupled with
his fluency in Finnish from Columbia University language courses\, launche

How to Attrac
t More Customers on First FridayOffer a First Friday Special: Create some
thing exclusive to the evening\, such as a featured menu item\, drink\, pr
oduct or experience. Run a Discount or Promotion: A limited-time offer ca
n give people an extra reason to step inside while they’re already downt
own. Consider a percentage discount\, complimentary item or special bundle
. Host Your Own First Friday Event: Consider an artist reception\, live m
usic\, demonstration\, pop-up\, tasting or other experience. Even a small
activation can give customers a reason to visit.
’t need a large budget or elaborate event to participate. The most impor
tant step is simply being open and giving people a reason to come inside.
With Terrain 17 bringing thousands of people downtown on October 2\, this
year’s October First Friday offers an especially strong opportunity to t
urn downtown foot traffic into customers. Open your doors. Give people a r
eason to stop. Be part of First Friday. \n \n \n

How to Attrac
t More Customers on First FridayOffer a First Friday Special: Create some
thing exclusive to the evening\, such as a featured menu item\, drink\, pr
oduct or experience.
