After h er grandmother heard her sing\, the matriarch footed the bill for James ’ voice lessons\, positive that her granddaughter had the mysterious “ it factor”. And\, despite the sometimes treacherous terrain of the musi c industry\, James has never tired in her quest. Whether it’s tussling with label executives\, covering and owning songs by the likes of the Beat les or Prince\, or creating her own brand of original soul music\, James h as carved out an enviable and diverse career\, always on her own terms. \ nJames has a particular taste for inserting herself into men’s spaces\, twisting hyper-masculine songs to her will and changing their meanings in the process. An additional highlight includes a solo performance on the Esplanade with Ke ith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In the Baltimore/Washington ar ea\, Jones was a featured vocalist with the Jazz Ambassadors and has grace d the stages of the Hippodrome Theater\, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall\, Strathm ore Mansion\, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.   \nJones\ , who began her musical career as a pianist\, received her Bachelor of Mus ic in Piano Performance at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and her Master of Music in Piano Accompanying at the University of Cincinnati College-Co nservatory of Music.
