DESCRIPTION:Salmon have always been vital to the Pacific Northwest’s eco
system. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, Seattle District Engineer Maj.
Hiram M. Chittenden\, for whom the locks are now named\, understood this a
nd planned on incorporating a fish ladder in the designs when he proposed
building them in the early 1900s. \nThe best times for viewing salmon migr
ating upstream in the ladder are: \n\nChinook\, or King Salmon\, July thro
ugh November (best viewing last two weeks of August)\nCoho\, or Silver Sal
mon\, August through November (best viewing last two weeks of September)\n
Sockeye\, or Red Salmon\, June through October (best viewing July)\n\nPlan

DESCRIPTION:The Downtown Issaquah Association celebrates its latest Story
Stroll™ “edutainment” program along with the Issaquah Library with t
he fanciful\, heartwarming book “Watercress” written by Andrea Wange a
nd illustrated by Jason Chin. \nThe Story Stroll™ features a story about
the power of sharing memories—including the painful ones—and the way
our heritage stays with and shapes us\, even when we don’t see it. \nAut
hor Andrea Wang calls this moving\, autobiographical story “both an apol
ogy and a love letter to my parents.” It’s a bittersweet\, delicate lo
ok at how sharing the difficult parts of our histories can create powerful
new moments of family history and help connect us to our roots.

DESCRIPTION:Get up close with Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads
(2010) at the Olympic Sculpture Park\, where you can walk among these mon
umental sculptures. Consisting of 12 zodiac head sculptures arranged in an
arcing semicircle\, each animal in Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads stands
over ten feet tall and weighs over 1500 pounds. The sculptures are install
ed in order of the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Ra
 bbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Ram\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Boar. \
nThe works reconceive 12 zodiac heads that once decorated an 18th-century
Qing imperial fountain before they were looted during the Second Opium War
(1856–1860). Seven are based on the original heads that have survived\,
and Ai researched and reimagined the five animals still missing to comple
te the zodiac. This work embodies Ai’s long engagement with questioning
the tendency to value the real over the fake and the original over the cop
 y. \nCircle of Animals/Zodiac Heads joins over twenty monumental sculpture
s in the park\, including The Eagle (1971) by Alexander Calder\, Wake (200
2–3) by Richard Serra\, and Seattle Cloud Cover (2006) by Teresita Fern
ández. See this temporary installation situated in the Ackerly Meadow\, j
ust outside of the PACCAR Pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle
’s largest green space\, the nine-acre sculpture park\, is free and open
daily from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset.
