When these two tones approach the unison\, one can perceive pul sations (beats) of ever slower frequency. I seek to discover the expressiv e potential that is revealed by these pulsations. On a very basic level\, slow pulsations feel peaceful\, calm whereas faster ones create tension\; these poles could roughly be compared to what is traditionally considered consonance vs. dissonance in earlier music.One difficulty with the percept ion of these beats is that one must almost “not hear” the tones that a re produced by the instruments\, but concentrate on the resulting beats th at emanate from their combination. This requires shifting our listening at tention from one level to the other\, as if listening to some sort of poly phony. The beats are a very delicate acoustic phenomenon—sometimes much fainter than the main tones. They are also fairly unstable because they re ly on the performers maintaining an absolute steadiness in intonation\, so mething that is almost impossible to achieve for a long period of time: on string instruments\, in particular\, the intonation can vary minutely wit h the pressure of the bow on the string\, as well as with the slightest mo vement of the finger on the string that is being stopped. These minute cha nges are usually not heard because with larger intervals\, the ear adapts to the context—“understands the pitch\,” so to speak. But the produc tion of beats requires extremely small intervallic differences and\, in th is world\, tiny changes in frequency can alter the effect dramatically. Fa r from being an inconvenience\, I value this evanescence\, this uncertaint y\, both in the production and the perception\, as an essential part of th e musical language based on this acoustic phenomenon. This fourth string q uartet\, like the preceding two\, invites us to bring our listening attent ion to a very focused kind of concentration\, inside the movement of the s ound.BiographiesThe Arditti Quartet enjoys a world-wide reputation for the ir spirited and technically refined interpretations of contemporary and ea rlier 20th century music. Reyes was rais ed in Loiza Aldea\, a community with an influential bomba tradition\, and also learned other regional styles of bomba. He performed for several year s with the Cepeda family\, one of bomba’s foremost culture bearers\, in the community of Santurce. He also performed in his father’s pioneering group\, Agüeybaná\, who helped popularize participatory “bombazos” i n the 1990s.BombaBomba is a centuries old tradition in Puerto Rico\, pract iced both in slave plantations and free Black communities. It is related t o several other Caribbean dance drumming traditions\, including gwoka in G uadeloupe\, tumba francesa in Cuba\, and Bele in Martinique\, all of which have roots in Haiti. These traditions all involve a dynamic relationship between sound and movement. In the case of bomba\, as it is practiced toda y\, a single dancer improvises while a lead drummer\, or subidor\, sounds the dancer’s movements. This improvised duet between dancer and drummer is accompanied by percussion and singing in the batey\, a native Taino wor d for a circle in which people conduct play or ritual.The bomba ensemble i ncludes two drumming roles: a single subidor (also called primo)\, which s ounds the dancer’s movements\, and one or more buleador drums that accom pany the subidor with a steady rhythm. The drums are accompanied by call a nd response singing\, by the cuá (a barrell struck with sticks) and by a single maraca\, usually played by the lead singer. She has held teaching residencies in Hong Kong\, Kuala Lumpur\, Singapore\, and British Columbia. Rachelle McCabe is the artistic direct or of Corvallis-OSU Piano International with its prestigious Steinway Pian o Series\, workshops\, and educational outreach programs. In lieu of live concerts during the pandemic lockdown\, Rachelle directed an exciting virt ual piano festival presenting more than 20 world-renowned pianists in excl usive performances. The festival is available at Corvallispiano.org.  Rac helle also directs the OSU Chamber Music Workshop and the OSU Piano Instit ute\, both summer programs.Believing in the power of collaborative arts to help bring about change\, Rachelle has created innovative programs and vi deos with writer/philosopher Kathleen Dean Moore and various other poets\, artists\, and scientists to address the global crisis of climate change a nd extinction.
