DESCRIPTION:To conclude the 2026 Neddy Artist Award exhibition\, Agents of
Change\, we are proud to announce a special engagement for our community
to have a casual conversation with this year's exhibition curator\, Ellen
Ito. Coffee with the Curator will take place at The Behnke Family Gallery
during the final days of the exhibition. This is your last chance to see t
his year's exhibition and to gain a better insight into the curatorial pro
cess.\n\n \n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\nCornish College of the Arts at Seatt
le University is proud to present the 2026 Neddy Artist Award Exhibition\,
Agents of Change. The exhibition features the work of eight artists from
the Puget Sound region in both painting and open medium. This year’s exh
ibition features work from Fumi Amano\, Dana Blume\, Jo Cosme\, Francesca
 Lohmann\, Sangram Majumdar\, Cristina Martinez\, ralph salazar\, and Lila
 Thomas – curated by Ellen Ito.\n\n \n\nExhibition Statement\n\nThrough t
heir individual explorations of unfixed narratives\, these eight artists a
ctively position their practices and themselves as agents of change. They
initiate transformation by challenging the status quo\, each fostering inn
ovative ways of thinking\, operating\, seeing\, and feeling. These artists
\, with disparate practices and ways of embodying change\, thrive both ind
ividually and collectively\, their shared resilience creating a powerful n
arrative of progress.\n\nCrowds peer at each other as a drawing reaches fo
r the ceiling\nTaffy makes a languorous escape\nA monolithic hunk of styro
foam asks you to look deeply\, breathe\, and listen.\nLayers of color buil
d visual sanctuaries of warmth and calm\nAn enormous womb patiently awaits
your return\nPortraits hold space and share energy\nAn arcade favorite wa
nts to remind you of the impact of extractive tourism\nCrestfallen soft cr
eatures consider their options\nExpressing themselves through painting\, s
 culpture\, performance\, and installation\, these\nartists/agents engage i
n restorative labor:\nRaising awareness about the ongoing harms of imperia
lism\,\ndelving into the art historical canon to reconfigure meaning\,\nfo
rmally subverting fixed cultural and aesthetic norms\, activating\ntempora
 l relationships with materials\, and centering care.\n\n \n\nOn View\nJune
  3rd – Sept. 12th\, 2026\n\nGallery Hours\nWednesday – Saturday – 12
pm – 5pm\n\n \n\nAbout the Neddy\n\nThe Neddy Artist Award is one of the
most generous and longest-running awards for visual artists in the State
of Washington\, now providing two awards of $30\,000\, and six of $3\,000\
, to artists living and working in the Puget Sound region.\n\nOur program
began in 1996 and is funded by the Behnke Foundation as a tribute to the l
ife and work of Seattle painter and teacher Robert E. [Ned] Behnke (1948-1
989). In 2011\, Cornish College of the Arts gained stewardship of the Nedd
y\, and we are thrilled to now be entering our thirtieth year as a part of
Seattle University!\n\n \n\nHeader image artwork by Dana Blume. Too Slow

DESCRIPTION:Technology\, Innovation Law\, and Ethics (TILE) Institute's An

xpanding Integrity\, Privacy\, and Education in an Ever-Evolving AI Landsc
ape\n\nIn-person/virtual | CLE credits (6.25 pending) | Free to attend and
open to all\n\n \n\nIntegrity is key to the rule of law and public trust
in the legal system.\n\n \n\nAnd artificial intelligence has a transformat
ive impact on the practice of law. Yet a lack of systematic proficiency\,
clarity\, and governance over this rapidly evolving technology raises grav
e concerns about maintaining integrity throughout the legal system. This s
ymposium explores how artificial intelligence offers both great promise to
improve access to justice and equally enormous potential to entrench ineq
uality. It examines its impacts on contract law\, legal education\, and th
 e ethics of legal practice. \n\n \n\nThe TILE Institute’s 2026 Symposium
is on the theme of "Legal Technology for Equitable Justice: Expanding Int
 egrity\, Privacy\, and Education in an Ever-Evolving AI Landscape.”\n\n
\n\nThis timely symposium\, co-sponsored by the Seattle University Law Rev
iew\, brings together experts in technology\, private law\, and legal educ
ation to discuss key legal issues regarding the implications of artificial
intelligence on the practice of law. The panels will examine controversie
s and propose recommendations that harness artificial intelligence technol
ogy to enhance\, rather than undermine\, integrity and equity in the legal
system. \n\n \n\nJurist-in-Residence and Ninth Circuit Senior Judge Marga
ret McKeown will deliver a keynote address\, and a reception will follow t
 he Symposium.\n\n \n\nSeptember 29\, 2025\n\n10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.\n\nSulli

DESCRIPTION:The Dean's Luminaries in Law series continues with a timely an
d thought provoking conversation with renowned criminal justice innovator
Jonathan Rapping. Rapping is the Founder and former Chief Executive Office
 r of Gideon’s Promise\, a nonprofit public defender organization.\n\n \n
\nIn June 2025\, the Washington Supreme Court issued an order adopting a s
et of caseload standards for public defenders\, with a 10-year implementat
ion period to begin on January 1\, 2026\, and a three-year progress report
to be prepared by the Office of Public Defense.\n\n \n\nAt present there
are four separate lawsuits addressing the adequacy of public defense in Wa
shington. Counties have sued the state arguing that the state's failure to
properly fund local jurisdictions hinders the effectiveness of the system
. The ACLU of Washington has sued Yakima County for failing to timely appo
int counsel. The Washington Appellate project has sued the state Office of
Public Defense arguing that proposed changes to its funding structure wil
l render it impossible for their lawyers to carry out their ethical duties
to clients and vindicate their clients' constitutional rights. Seattle Un
iversity School of Law's Defender Initiative addressed these workload stan
dards in its annual conference in June.\n\n \n\nRapping's visit is thus ex
tremely well-timed. Washington is going to need to be creative and dynamic
if we are to develop a system of public defense that guarantees to everyo
ne across the state the quality of representation to which they are entitl
ed. As one of the nation's leaders in recruiting\, developing\, and sustai
ning public defenders\, Rapping's message should be of great interest to s
 tudents\, faculty\, the legal community\, and\, truly\, anyone concerned a
 bout justice.\n\n \n\nDate: October 8\, 2026\n\nTime: 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.\n\
nLocation: Student Center Room 160 (The LeRoux Conference Room)\n\nFree to
attend and open to all\; registration required\n\nStreet parking is readi
ly available or explore our visitor parking page for parking options\n\n \
n\nThis event is a collaboration between Seattle University School of Law'
s Defender Clinic and Seattle University's College of Arts & Sciences. The
  law school's Defender Initiative is a partnering sponsor.\n\n \n\nAbout J
onathan Rapping\n\n \n\nJonathan Rapping is a nationally renowned criminal
justice innovator and the Founder and former Chief Executive Officer of G
ideon’s Promise\, a nonprofit public defender organization whose mission
is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of pub
lic defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.\n\n
\n\nSince its inception in 2007\, Gideon’s Promise has grown from a sing
le training program for sixteen attorneys in two public defender offices i
n Georgia and Louisiana to a national enterprise with over 1\,000 particip
ants in 40 offices across 27 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organ
ization’s initial three-year program for new public defenders has expand
ed into the only comprehensive model that supports defenders at all levels
of their careers\, with programming for new lawyers\, supervisors\, chief
defenders\, trainers\, law students\, and the clinical instructors who te
ach them.\n\n \n\nFrom 2022 to 2024\, Rapping served as the Chief Executiv
e Officer of Gideon’s Promise. In 2024\, he stepped down as CEO to join
the organization’s Board of Directors\, where he continues to advance it
s mission and vision for justice-centered public defense reform.\n\n \n\nR
apping is the Professor of Law and Director of the Criminal Justice Certif
icate Program at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) and visiting
Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He also serves as the Faculty Dir
ector of the Center for Criminal Justice Innovation (CCJI). Through the CC
JI\, Rapping and his colleagues aim to develop future lawyers with excepti
onal legal skills and justice-centered values\, while connecting them with
a robust network of mentors and professionals. Students will be guided to
forge a professional identity aligned with their purpose for coming to la
w school.\n\n \n\nRapping is a frequent contributor to national conversati
ons on criminal justice reform and has been featured by media outlets incl
uding The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, HuffPost\, The Atlanta Jo
urnal-Constitution\, Mother Jones\, Essence\, and NPR stations nationwide.
He has spoken at TEDx Atlanta\, regularly presents to public defender and
criminal defense organizations across the country\, and frequently lectur
es at law schools nationwide. His work with public defenders was the inspi
 ration for the award-winning HBO documentary Gideon’s Army.\n\n \n\nRapp
ing is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions\, including the M
acArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant\, the American College of Trial Law
yers Emil Gumpert Award\, the Harvard Law School Wasserstein Public Intere
st Fellowship\, the Cardozo Law School Inspire Award\, and the George Soro
s Open Society Fellowship. He and Gideon’s Promise have also received th
e National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists Sen
tencing Project Award\, the Southern Center for Human Rights Gideon’s Pr
omise Award\, and the Emory University Martin Luther King Jr. Community Se
rvice Award.\n\n \n\nHe is the author of Gideon’s Promise: A Public Defe
nder Movement to Transform Criminal Justice (Beacon Press\, 2020)\, which
explores a cutting-edge vision for public defenders in the effort to trans
form the criminal justice system.\n\n \n\nRapping earned his J.D. from Geo
rge Washington University School of Law\, his M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wils
on School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University\, an
 d his B.A. from the University of Chicago.\n\n \n\nAbout the Dean's Lumina
ries in Law Lecture and Conversation Series\n\n \n\nThe Dean's Luminaries
in Law Lecture and Conversation Series brings to Seattle University School
of Law nationally and internationally preeminent leaders from law practic
e\, the judiciary\, government\, and the corporate world\, to share their
bold ideas about the future of law and the legal profession. \n\n \n\nAbou
t Seattle University School of Law's Defender Initiative\n\n \n\nThe Defen
der Initiative is part of the Center for Civil Rights and Critical Justice
\, whose mission is to advance justice and equality through a unified visi
on that combines research\, advocacy\, and education. The project works to
effect systemic improvement in the provision of public defense services i
 n Washington and nationally.\n\n \n\nAbout the Defender Clinic\n\n \n\nSea
ttle University's highly ranked Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic provides stu
dents with the opportunity to work on real cases\, helping real clients\,
under close faculty supervision. Students in the Defender Clinic represent
both juvenile and adult clients with respect to criminal legal system inv

DESCRIPTION:Join Roundglass India Center at Cornish College of the Arts fo
r a special appearance by acclaimed poet\, novelist\, and performer Tishan
i Doshi. The appearance is the inaugural event of Doshi's residency as th
e 2026–2027 Raman Family Visiting Scholar in India Studies.\n \n\nDoshi
brings poems from her forthcoming collection Egrets\, While War (Copper Ca
nyon Press) into a live convergence of film\, spoken word\, and movement.
Moving between birds and bomb sites\, myth and extinction\, the performanc
e unfolds in dialogue with a film of three masked women who echo and multi
ply the lone performer on stage — plurality as a condition of survival\,
as one body is continually reflected\, fractured\, and returned through a
nother. The piece reflects Doshi's distinctive practice of staging her rea
dings as full theatrical works rather than traditional podium events. Fol
lowing the 30-minute performance\, Doshi will join Loyola Endowed Professo
