Stroll™ “edutainment” program along with the Issaquah Library with t

the power of sharing memories—including the painful ones—and the way
our heritage stays with and shapes us\, even when we don’t see it. \nAut
hor Andrea Wang calls this moving\, autobiographical story “both an apol

DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wilderness Arboretum and Maple Valley Library have pa
rtnered together to bring a StoryWalk to Maple Valley. StoryWalk is an inn
ovative approach to encouraging people of all ages to get out and walk whi
le enjoying wonderful children’s books. With her wealth of experience\,
Sharon Chastain\, the children’s librarian at the Maple Valley Library\,
selects the best children’s books for this story walk project. Then the
pages are installed in frames along the Arboretum’s Main Looping Trail
so as you walk\, you can read the book one page at a time\, all while enjo
ying being outside. Our hope is that this feature will provide children a
new way to see\, learn and experience the amazing world that we live in. \
nSeptember StoryWalk:  \nThis month’s StoryWalk selection\, The Girl wi
th Big\, Big Questions written by Britney Winn Lee\, is a lively picture b
ook about a persistent girl and her quest for knowledge. It celebrates the
spirit of curiousity and shows us that asking questions is how we learn a
nd grow – perhaps the perfect book to read as a new school year starts.
 \nSo get outside\, go for a walk\, and read a book.

DESCRIPTION:Get up close with Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads
(2010) at the Olympic Sculpture Park\, where you can walk among these mon
umental sculptures. Consisting of 12 zodiac head sculptures arranged in an
arcing semicircle\, each animal in Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads stands
over ten feet tall and weighs over 1500 pounds. The sculptures are install
ed in order of the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Ra
 bbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Ram\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Boar. \
nThe works reconceive 12 zodiac heads that once decorated an 18th-century
Qing imperial fountain before they were looted during the Second Opium War
(1856–1860). Seven are based on the original heads that have survived\,
and Ai researched and reimagined the five animals still missing to comple
te the zodiac. This work embodies Ai’s long engagement with questioning
the tendency to value the real over the fake and the original over the cop
 y. \nCircle of Animals/Zodiac Heads joins over twenty monumental sculpture
s in the park\, including The Eagle (1971) by Alexander Calder\, Wake (200
2–3) by Richard Serra\, and Seattle Cloud Cover (2006) by Teresita Fern
ández. See this temporary installation situated in the Ackerly Meadow\, j
ust outside of the PACCAR Pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle
’s largest green space\, the nine-acre sculpture park\, is free and open
daily from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset.

DESCRIPTION:The American flag is a dynamic and evolving symbol inviting be
longing\, inspiring sacrifice\, and projecting power. Across generations\,
people used it to celebrate the nation’s founding ideals\, while others
used it to challenge the country to live up to those same promises. \nFor
Which It Stands invites visitors to explore the many meanings and contrad
ictions embodied in the flag. Through historical flags and imagery from MO
HAI Collections\, alongside contributions from community partners\, this e
xhibit traces how the flag appears in moments of unity\, protest\, conflic
t\, and change. \nVisitors encounter stories reflecting a wide range of pe
 rspectives\, highlighting how different communities embrace\, question\, a
nd redefine the flag’s symbolism over time. These layered histories reve
al the flag not as a fixed icon\, but as a living symbol shaped by the peo
ple who carry it forward. \nA collective\, interactive artwork invites gue
sts to consider what this symbol represents for them personally\, cultural
ly\, and nationally\, and to weave themselves into the story of the flag.
\nBy examining both the ideals the flag represents and the realities of Am
erican history\, the exhibit encourages visitors to think critically about
how national symbols shape identity and how they might be used to imagine
  a more inclusive future.
