DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly writing class\, we’ll focus on gen
erative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introd
uctions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems
and write in response. At times\, you'll have the opportunity to share wor
ds and ideas with other writers in small groups. You'll leave with 2-3 new
drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as
well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can
be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \nAbo
ut Write with Hugo House \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing
circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you
’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportun
ity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pres
sure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current
work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers.

iscussing their storied careers and the lessons they’ve learned along th

son is best known as a prolific author\; David Horsey as a political carto
onist. However\, the two have more in common than extensive bibliographies
and a mutual admiration of each other’s work. Horsey just published his
debut novel\, Beach of Stars\, and Johnson has recently released a collec

our Racial Problems Will Soon End. Both creators have years of experience
in pushing industry boundaries and showing the importance of continually
giving creative minds room to grow. Between the two\, they display that ye

 as essayists\, columnists\, philosophers\, musicians\, and more. \nFollow
Johnson and Horsey on a tour through their wide-ranging careers\, with abu

DESCRIPTION:Success is a word that will be defined differently depending o
n who you ask\, but achieving “success” in one way or another is a com
mon framework through which we define our worth. And while achieving succe
ss may appear like the basic product of hours worked plus passion and dete
rmination\, we secretly rely on external factors like people\, places\, an
d environments to truly achieve our goals. Situations have more effect on
us than we realize\, and by curating our company\, living spaces\, and the
situations we engage in everyday\, success often starts to come quicker t
han we imagine. \nThis is the concept that bestselling author\, Angela Duc
kworth\, explores in her new book\, Situated: Find the People and Places
that Bring Out Your Best. In her previous work\, Grit\, Duckworth showed
that a common denominator of successful individuals is the combination of
passion and perseverance. In Situated\, she builds on this idea\, this ti
me looking outwards at the environmental factors that support us in reachi
ng our goals. Duckworth’s in-depth research reveals the enormous influen
ce wielded by the objects within arm’s reach\, including peers\, mentors
\, and even your zip code.

DESCRIPTION:They were perhaps an unlikely trio: the professor Leah Stokes\
, the policy wonk Sonia Aggarwal in the White House\, and the DC insider A
drian Deveny in the Senate\, but together\, they crafted the boldest clima
te legislation of our time. In her newest book\, The Carbon Wave\, Leah S
tokes chronicles the turbulent path of their climate bill as it veered bet
ween breakthrough and collapse — from the hopeful beginnings of the Gree
n New Deal in 2018\, to the bill’s near-certain defeat by Senator Joe Ma
nchin in the winter of 2021\, to the surprise passage of the landmark legi
slation in August 2022. During this critical time\, the author was pregnan
t\, or in the NICU with her premature twins\, and Aggarwal and Deveny were
new parents too. \nInterlacing personal narratives with stories from Cong
ress\, the White House\, and outside activists\, Stokes shows how dogged p
erseverance and collective action can still bend the course of history. Th
e book concludes with an update from the second Trump administration\, exp
laining the parts of the bill that were — and were not — rolled back\,
and why we should remain hopeful that progress is still being made. \nEve
ryone has been told to shrink their carbon footprint and lighten their loa
d on our planet by changing their behavior. But what if instead of making
ourselves smaller\, we joined with others to maximize our impact?

DESCRIPTION:Across our modern landscapes\, more and more people are voicin
g a want for community. Dynamic friend groups. High-performing colleagues
and workplaces. Successful teams. And success means we connect meaningfull
y\, reach our goals\, and don’t fight…right? Conflict facilitator and

a that conflict is abnormal or that good groups don’t fight. All groups
change and evolve\, and hard conversations and disagreement are part of th

ecological impact and supports countless species — including acclaimed
nature writer Marina Richie. In her newest book\, Feathered Forest: Aloft

home in Central Oregon and spanning both sides of the Cascade Mountains\,
Feathered Forest explores the centuries-old forests that hold a crucial
space in this time of climate crisis. The birds that inhabit this unique l

DESCRIPTION:The award-winning\, bestselling author of Station Eleven and S
ea of Tranquility returns with Exit Party\, a breathtaking novel of double
s\, shadow worlds\, and fractured timelines as a man disappears from a gli
 ttering Los Angeles party\, and a woman—a gunrunner\, an art collector\,
  an operative of the State—searches for answers. \nLos Angeles\, 2031: T
he first spring after the collapse of the United States\, peacekeeping tro
ops withdraw from the city\, the Jacaranda trees blossom\, and the curfew
is finally lifted. Ari Waker and her roommate pass the gauntlet of bomb-sn

ss Silverlake to a party. The mood is ecstatic inside the apartment\, peop
le drink and dance\, a woman wears a silver dress\, pleated like tinfoil.
And then: A shift. A bewildered twin\, an uncanny doppleganger stumbles th
rough the crowd and out into the night\, and Kareem\, the party’s host\,
vanishes into thin air. \nAs Ari Waker unravels the mystery of this inexp

future America splintered by civil war to the seaside cliffs of Greece wh

Paris to a colony on the moon. An unforgettable literary feat\, Exit Par

state\, a requiem for a world not unlike our own\, and a breathtaking stor

DESCRIPTION:Has it ever felt like the planet is burning\, shared reality i
s melting\, and a new iteration of the extreme is on the march? In their n
ew book\, End Times Fascism and the Fight for the Living World\, activists
and authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor help readers not only understand
this development\, but how to resist it. \nOffering a scathing assessment
of the contemporary scene\, Klein and Taylor explore how religious fundam
entalists\, Silicon Valley technologists\, and ethno-nationalists make up
an apocalyptic alliance that share more than one might think: they are uni
ted in the belief that some kind of cleansing cataclysm is coming\, whethe
r through the manifestation of messianic prophecy\, the rampages of artifi
cial intelligence\, or the purported existential threat of immigration and
cultural replacement. Klein and Taylor contend that rather than avoiding
this conflagration\, this group welcomes it\, convinced they will be among
the saved on the other side. \n“End Times Fascism” is the ideology of
the actors who strive to make the world unlivable and then seek to protec
t themselves from the fallout — whether by retreating to luxurious priva
te islands\, rocketing off to Mars\, or bunkering the nation to keep their
enemies at bay. The new survivalists have accumulated power\, but they ar
e far from impregnable. As Klein and Taylor show via original reporting an
 d analysis\, their many internal conflicts\, contradictions\, and nihilist
ic inability to envision a shared future leave them vulnerable to a new ki
nd of politics — rooted in reverence for our shared existence and regard
for the earth we inhabit and must protect.

DESCRIPTION:As the climate emergency worsens and biodiversity shrinks\, we
humans get used to it — we adapt\, we normalize\, we forget. Scientists
call this “shifting baseline syndrome” and warn that it’s why we ar
e increasingly sleepwalking toward disaster. In his new book\, The Earth S
aid Remember Me: How to Revive Our Memories and Restore the Planet\, envi
ronmental activist and longtime editor-in-chief of Sierra magazine Jason

Make a record. Pass it on. Mark makes the case for easy\, everyday pract

ll be hosting a workshop titled: I Want to Write a Poem (But Don’t Know
How). Cost: free\, suggested donation $25. \nThis will be the second works
hop aiming to demystify the process of writing poetry\, and\, as the CPL a
nd Cascadia 2050 missions say\, “empower people to practice poetry…”
In our first workshop\, we learned a little from Brenda Hillman about wha
t it means to be a poet. As she says\, “to be a poet you only need 3 rea
ders\, and one of them can be a tree.” With the idea established that po
etry is an expansive mode which includes metered and rhymed lyrics\, but g
oes far beyond such formal forms\, our next workshop will take us into the
toolbelt of the poet. We will talk about what “form” really means for
a poem\, and how we can use things like enjambment and assonance to chann
el energy and create interesting pieces. \nAs previously stated\, on a lar
ger scale\, a creative practice is a powerful personal antidote to the dep
ressants of attention fracking\, war-mongering\, and climate crisis we are
all exposed to right now. It can help build physical\, emotional\, and in
tellectual resilience. It can help build community. It can help build a cu
lture that is based on humans\, not corporations. And we Cascadia 2050ites
want to share that with you! So if you\, a friend\, a family member\, or
an annoying coworker needs this kind of poetic energy in their life right
now\, please come\, join us\, and invite that person in your life! \nClick

DESCRIPTION:Join Roundglass India Center at Cornish College of the Arts fo
r a special appearance by acclaimed poet\, novelist\, and performer Tishan
i Doshi. The appearance is the inaugural event of Doshi's residency as th
e 2026–2027 Raman Family Visiting Scholar in India Studies.\n \n\nDoshi
brings poems from her forthcoming collection Egrets\, While War (Copper Ca
nyon Press) into a live convergence of film\, spoken word\, and movement.
Moving between birds and bomb sites\, myth and extinction\, the performanc
e unfolds in dialogue with a film of three masked women who echo and multi
ply the lone performer on stage — plurality as a condition of survival\,
as one body is continually reflected\, fractured\, and returned through a
nother. The piece reflects Doshi's distinctive practice of staging her rea
dings as full theatrical works rather than traditional podium events. Fol
lowing the 30-minute performance\, Doshi will join Loyola Endowed Professo
r and novelist Sonora Jha for a conversation and audience Q&A. The evening
closes with a book signing\; copies of Doshi's work will be available for
purchase courtesy of Elliott Bay Book Company.\n \n\nDate: Monday\, Octob

soon\n\n \n\nIn 1970\, liberal America seemed at the end of its rope. Ou
t of the flower children and free-loving hippies that has popularized the
cultural landscape\, a new wave of radicals entered the scene: the Yippies
. Avantgarde and arrogant\, the Yippies made their anti-war\, anti-capita
list sentiments well known with in your face activism. When Terry\, a wil
d but weary leader of the Yippies\, gets an idea to organize a protest in
Disneyland\, he’s looking for a lot more than a chance to stick it to th
e man\; he’s looking to dig into a former friend who has betrayed him.
Based on true events\, this docudrama examines this day from all sides:
a manager at Disneyland\, guests of the park\, and the rebels who led the
 protests\, painting a picture of a both a divided and united America.\n\n
