Authorities coordinated ”Operation Seaside\,” a massive security plan involving 100 National Guardsmen and 44 state troopers\, while movin g the popular Pypo Club to a new location to isolate teenagers from the be ach. \nIn “Seaside’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Riots 1962-1964\, How a Coastal City’s Labor Day Riots Heralded a Decade of Unrest\,” author R.J. Mar x chronicles how the weekend’s events pitted over 1\,000 youngsters agai nst well-drilled forces utilizing modern tactics like undercover walkie-ta lkie surveillance and Polaroid cameras for booking arrests. \nThe riots ga ined national infamy when Seaside was featured in Barry Goldwater’s camp aign film “Choice” to portray an American “mobocracy\,” and was of ficially listed in an FBI report as one of nine major national riot locati ons that year. While the overwhelming force effectively broke the annual r iot cycle\, it eventually led to the replacement of the city’s “wretch ed” detention facilities. \nR.J. Marx is an author\, editor and journali st specializing in culture\, music and local history.
