DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Rustin Thompson journeys into the American West on a
search for traces of what was once a center of small-town life: the movie
theater. On the trip\, he finds long abandoned and forgotten cinemas\; mo
vie houses that have fallen into disrepair\; theaters recently closed\, th
eaters struggling to hold on\, and theaters that—thanks to their thought
ful caretakers—are not only surviving but thriving. Between the stops al
ong the way\, Rustin poetically intersperses excerpts from Peter Bogdanovi
ch’s 1971 classic film The Last Picture Show\, as well as reflections on
past and present hardships facing the film exhibition industry. The Last
Picture Shows is not only a timely portrait of an industry in crisis\, one
facing the headwinds of consolidation\, streaming\, and the diminishing t
heatrical experience\, but it also reminds viewers that even in vast cinem
a deserts\, there are oases of community and gathering that remain\, where
the movie house continues to be a place of wonder\, contemplation\, and c
onnection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Rustin Thompson is a writer and filmmake
r and deejay based in Seattle. His recent films include The Last Picture S
hows and Died Without Issue. His hybrid essay film\, Slow Revolution\, pla
yed in several international film festivals\, and his film My Mother Was H
ere won Best Documentary at the Tacoma Film Festival. His very first docum
entary\, made in 2000\, was 30 Frames A Second\, won several Best Document
ary awards\, was named one of the Top Ten films of the year by the America
n Library Association\, and one of the Best Undistributed Films of 2001 by
The Village Voice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCenter for C

DESCRIPTION:Will Poulter and Noah Centineo deliver pitch-perfect performan
ces as brothers Cody and Jack Parsons\, each navigating a court-mandated d
rug rehabilitation program in a pocket of rural Ohio hit hard by the opioi
d epidemic. Provided with hope for the first time since their struggles be
gan and with the support of a tireless counselor (Annette Deao)\, the brot
hers work toward a brighter\, sober future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPoulter and Cent
ineo blend seamlessly with a supporting cast composed predominantly of non
-professional actors as they share their actual experiences\, pain\, and o
ptimism as they\, themselves\, navigate the program. Ohio-born filmmaker A
dam Meeks creates a film imbued with realism for an honest\, compassionate
portrait of a battle being fought across America and the solidarity that
flowers on its front lines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The opioid epidemic has been
ravaging the United States for decades\, and while much attention has been
paid to Big Pharma and the root causes and effects of the epidemic\, topi
cs of addiction treatment and access to recovery communities are still und
er-recognized. Although many recovery programs across the country are inef
fective or problematic\, the drug courts I’ve observed in Ohio are profo
und in their values\, their success rates\, and in their underlying sense
of hope and connection. With Union County I’ve intended to look directly
at that notion of connection\, to celebrate the drug court and its partic
ipants\, and to explore a complex but hopeful counter-narrative to the opi
oid epidemic that needs to be seen — a young man getting back on his fee
 t. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile the film employs a fictional dramatic narrative bui
lt around Will Poulter and Noah Centineo’s central performances\, many o
f the court interactions emerge through a documentary process in the real
space\, with the real people. Additionally\, many of the supporting charac
ters are portrayed by non-professional actors from the Ohio recovery commu
nity playing versions of themselves\; this includes Annette Deao\, Judge B
raig\, and the majority of the recovery community surrounding our lead act
ors. The convergence of professional and non-professional actors is intend
ed to ground the story in authenticity and to invite collaboration from th
e community and the real-life characters themselves. ” -Director’s St

DESCRIPTION:Our country is now celebrating the 250th anniversary of the De
claration of Independence. Everyone understands the urge to place special
emphasis on anniversaries that are even multiples of ten\, but July 4\, 1
776\, was neither the beginning of the American revolution nor its end. A
rguably a more important date in our nation’s history was September 17\,
  1787\, two hundred thirty-nine years ago – sadly\, a prime number! –
when the Constitution under which our country still operates was signed in
Philadelphia and submitted to the thirteen states for ratification.\n\nTh
is lecture will inquire into the nature of a “constitution” in general
\, describe some of the intellectual\, historical\, and political currents
that shaped the document produced by the Constitutional Convention in the
summer of 1787\, ask which of its features have proved especially valuabl
e\, and discuss whether some others might profit from reconsideration or a
 mendment.
