DESCRIPTION:Tina Gharavi’s Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day takes Virg
inia Woolf’s 1919 novel and reshapes it into something wonderfully fresh
. While it is set firmly in Edwardian London\, this adaptation is less int
erested in being a stiff history lesson and more focused on exploring idea
s that still hit home today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the centre of the story is K
atharine Hilbery (Haley Bennett\, impressive)\, a young woman determined t
o pursue her passion for astronomy while pushing back against the rigid ex
pectations placed on her by both her family and society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWha
t makes Night & Day particularly engaging is its refusal to reduce Katha
rine’s journey to a simple love story. Bennett herself has described the
character as an “anti-romantic lead\,” and that independent spirit dr
ives the entire film. Katharine’s arc isn’t about finding ultimate ful
filment through marriage\; it’s about carving out her own identity in a
world that keeps trying to define it for her. The romantic entanglements a
re absolutely there\, but they  manage to create a bigger conversation a
round female ambition\, independence\, and self-discovery rather than bein
g the final prize. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBennett delivers  thoughtful\, nuanced
performance\, perfectly capturing Katharine’s sharp intelligence and gri
t in the face of the close-up society of the time.  She is backed by a f
antastic supporting cast. Jack Whitehall brings a surprising warmth and ch
arm to William Rodney\, the man she is being cajoled into marrying\, while
Lily Allen leaves a memorable impression as the outspoken Mary Datchet. A
llen’s natural\, rebellious energy feels perfectly suited to a character
who challenges convention at every single turn. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the
film’s most distinctive qualities is its modern energy. Instead of deliv
ering a stuffy\, traditional period piece\, Gharavi uses subtle stylistic
choices to make the story feel contemporary without breaking the historica
l illusion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired partly by the spirit of classic John Hu
ghes coming-of-age movies\, the result is a period drama that feels alive
and accessible\, drawing a straight line between the social pressures of 1
910 and the ones we still face today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film isn’t witho
ut its problems\, though. The middle section drags in places\, and some of
the storylines around Katharine’s family feel like they needed more roo
m to breathe. Gharavi’s bolder\, anachronitic stylistic choices can also
work against the film — moments that feel more like showing off than st
orytelling. You walk away impressed\, but not quite moved. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nM
 ore than just a standard romance\, Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day is a s
tory about having the courage to choose your own path in life. By focusing
on personal freedom instead of a cookie-cutter happy ending\, the film ho
nours Woolf’s original themes while inviting a whole new audience to con
nect with them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an elegant\, thoughtful\, and quietl
y rebellious film that offers a compelling reminder that the struggle to l
ive authentically never goes out of style. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\

DESCRIPTION:Course:The greatest comic opera you’ve probably never heard
or seen is Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor\, an ensemble comed
y from 1849 with a text that closely follows Shakespeare’s play. It over
flows with lyrical Italianate melodies\, boasts a witty\, richly Germanic
orchestration\, and features act finales worthy of Mozart. The many comic
elements are handled with a deftness and charm unequaled by any other Germ
an composer of the era. \n\n\n\nInstructor:Mark Tiarks has given many Rene
san presentations on film\, theater\, classical music\, and opera\, and ha
s won multiple national and state awards for his writing on the same subje
cts for The Santa Fe New Mexican. He’s a Carleton College alumnus and a
 Watson Foundation fellowship recipient.
