ism and Sanbo Zen\, the core teachings of our lineage\, Zendo etiquette\,
and meditation instruction. To help facilitate a more easeful experience d
uring these classes\, our teachers have created an updated curriculum\, sp

participants are encouraged to participate in all four installments\, th
ere isn’t a particular order or sequence required – you can jump in
any time and attend one or all. Each class still begins with introductions

 Forstman \n \n \n \n \n \n \n∞ \nValerie Forstman is an Associate Zen M
aster of the Sanbo Zen lineage and our Guiding Teacher here at Mountain
Cloud. Her first teacher\, with whom she continues to work\, was Ruben Hab
ito Roshi. Since 2003\, she has also trained under the guidance of Yamada
Ryoun Roshi\, current abbot of Sanbo Zen. \nValerie came to Mountain Cloud
with a shared vision of the core of the Zen path\, a way of coming home t
o who we truly are. In keeping with the Sanbo Zen tradition\, this path or
‘way’ may include koan training\, “just sitting” practice\, or si
mple breath awareness practice\, all of which funnel into what it means to
undergo the immense change of heart implied by the term “awakening.”
What a joy and what a rich process it can be\, not just to taste this\, bu
t to embody it and live it out in lives of compassionate service. \nA firs
t-career classical musician\, Valerie holds degrees from Oberlin College C
onservatory of Music and Stony Brook University in NY. She has taught and
performed in the U.S.\, Canada\, and around Europe. After discovering Zen\
, Valerie went on to earn a Masters of Theological Studies and Ph.D. from
Brite Divinity School. \nAs Guiding Teacher\, Valerie is responsible for
the quality and integrity of Zen offerings at Mountain Cloud. She offers
dokusan to over 50 students a week and runs our sesshin and zazenkai. A
longside her guiding work at Mountain Cloud\, Valerie leads sesshin (inten
sive Zen retreats) annually at two Zen centers in Germany. \n \n \n∞ \nT
eisho literally means “presentation of the shout.” It is not a lecture
or a didactic discourse but a direct sharing of the dharma springing from
the teacher’s experience. A teisho or dharma talk is not intended to en
gage the discursive mind. Rather\, the invitation is to let the language w
ash over the listener and\, if something strikes\, to let that resound. \n
At Mountain Cloud\, teisho often take up a koan\, a record of an exchange
between Chan/Zen masters or masters and disciples that conveys the world t
hey are sharing and carries the seeds of awakening. Teisho invite us to ke
ep company with the ancestors whose practice-awakening (a term from Dogen)
is freshly conveyed each time we turn to this living tradition.

en Format!  \nA staple of Mountain Cloud’s weekly offerings is the Intr
o to Zen class\, led by Sanbo Zen Teacher Scott Thornton. As long-timers k
now\, these classes are packed with information about the history of Buddh
ism and Sanbo Zen\, the core teachings of our lineage\, Zendo etiquette\,
and meditation instruction. To help facilitate a more easeful experience d
uring these classes\, our teachers have created an updated curriculum\, sp
reading this wealth of information across four classes each month. \nWhile
participants are encouraged to participate in all four installments\, th
ere isn’t a particular order or sequence required – you can jump in
any time and attend one or all. Each class still begins with introductions

zazen) and includes time for Q&A. \n~~~~ \nIntro to Zen is designed for

ription of the different types of practice\, from daily zazen to Zazenkai
(a full day of practice) to weekend and 6-day retreats (called Sesshin). \
nThese first three classes are typically led by Sanbo Zen Teacher Scott Th
ornton. \nSection 4 will be a more open ended meeting led by Assistant Tea
cher and founding member of Mountain Cloud\, Will Brennan.  \nAll are wel

DESCRIPTION:Second and Fourth Sundays of the month | 6:30 – 8:00pm MT\nI
 n-person only\; $5 – $10 suggested donation\nNote: this is not an offici
al Mountain Cloud event. It’s hosted by Santa Fe Young Meditators \nThis
event is hosted by Santa Fe Young Meditators and open to all. Questions a
bout the event can be directed toward the Santa Fe Young Meditators Meetup
Group or Instagram. \nThis group is open to practitioners of all ages and
experience (including those new to meditation) interested in exploring me
 ditation practice in a secular\, non-dogmatic environment. \nPractice begi
ns with 20 minutes of silent meditation (instruction available)\, followed
by social meditation. Social meditation is a practice of mindful communic
ation (think meditative talking circle with activities) in which body\, sp
eech and mind come together to help us bring congruency to our experience
and communication in the present moment. The practice fosters a sense of b
oth confidence and community. Practice ends at 8pm\, and you are invited t
o stay for tea afterwards. \nWhile engaging vulnerably with your own exper
ience is encouraged during this practice\, this is not meant to be a thera
py group and is not a replacement for therapy. The facilitators are not tr
ained mental health professionals. In order to keep this practice safe\, a
nything shared during this practice should be considered confidential. You
are welcome to discuss your own experience outside of practice\, but plea
se do not discuss others’ experiences or refer to anything shared during
group unless the person who shared brings it up first. \nThe suggested do
nation for this event is $5 – $10\, which help to cover the space donati
on and meetup.com fees. The facilitators are volunteers. \nNote: This is
not an official Mountain Cloud event. It’s hosted by Santa Fe Young Med
itators. \nAbout Santa Fe Young Meditators \nSanta Fe Young Meditators is
a meditation\, mindfulness and social group for those who identify in some
way as “young” – 20s\, 30s\, & 40s but all are welcome. The idea of
focusing on age is not meant to be exclusionary\, but rather to promote c
ommunity\, connection and inspiration among an age group that is often in
the minority at many meditation centers. \nThe group is a way to connect\,
share space\, presence\, and practice with others who are interested in m
editation and mindfulness\, community and social engagement\, regardless o
f what tradition you may practice in.
