DESCRIPTION:Register\n\nSAR Member Field Trip \n\n\nBears Ears\, East to
 West \n\nOctober 14 -18\, 2026    \n\n\nJoin an intimate group of y
our fellow SAR members and leading archaeologists\, Winston Hurst and Jo
nathan Till on a five-day\, four-night journey through the Bears Ears and
Cedar Mesa region of southeastern Utah. Departing from Santa Fe\, we will
travel as a group from SAR to the Desert Rose Inn in Bluff\, UT\, our home
base for the duration of the trip. We will be partnering with Wild Expedit
ions Outfitters throughout the week for transportation and access to a wid
e range of sites throughout the region. \nThe Bears Ears cultural landscap
e is greater than the monument’s bounds. This program gives participants
an experience with that broader landscape. We start with a visit to the E
dge of the Cedars State Park Museum to review the material culture of the
Mesa Verde region. Our second day reaches east to consider some of the lat
est and earliest Pueblo occupations in the area\, including the massive ea
rly Pueblo I village called Brew 13. The following day lands our tour on C
edar Mesa itself\, with beautiful views of the Bears Ears buttes and oppor
tunities to investigate Ancestral roads that transect the mesa top. Our fo
urth day affords the group an exploration of sites in a deeply incised por
tion of Butler Wash\, including a visit to Ball Room Cave\, a deep alcove
on Comb Ridge that harbors dramatic cultural features. Our final day ponde
rs Chacoan landscapes and petroglyph imagery. \nThe whole of the program f
ocuses mainly on the Puebloan occupation of the Bears Ears region\, and sp
ans over 600 years of Ancestral history from AD 600 to 1280. We will also
lean heavily into the history of the Chaco Phenomenon\; some of the larger
sites that we will visit will include this powerful tradition. While we w
ill sometimes focus on artifacts and architecture immediately in front of
us\, participants in this program will be asked to step back\, way back\,
and consider where we are in relation to places distant on the horizon and
  sometimes\, even\, beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWinston Hurst has been a
ctively engaged in the archaeology of the Four Corners region since 1973.
During those decades\, he led numerous survey and excavation projects\, co
llaborated with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center many times\, held a cura
torship at the Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum\, and conducted resear
ch into various aspects of northern San Juan archaeology and history inclu
ding ancient Basketmaker/Puebloan communities\, ceramics and roads\; Navaj
 o migration and settlement\; Anglo-American history\, and application of L
iDAR technology to identification of ancient integrative and farming lands
cape features. See some of his papers and publications. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\n\nJonathan Till has been an archaeologist in the northern Southwest for
over 30 years and is currently the curator for Edge of the Cedars State Pa
rk Museum in Blanding\, Utah. With a long-standing interest in the Ancestr
al communities of the northern Southwest\, his experience lies mostly in t
he larger Four Corners region\, but spills into western and central Utah a
nd northern Arizona. Till’s interests include the Chaco Phenomenon\, as
well as the broad spectrum of material culture contained in the landscapes
of the Mesa Verde region. Jonathan has an MA in Anthropology from Univers
ity of Colorado\, Boulder. He played the tuba in high school and has a dog
named Bourbon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDifficulty Level: Moderate - While the m
ajority of the sites we will visit will be on relatively-flat\, easily-tra
versed terrain\, a short distance from the parking area\, there will be ti
mes when longer distances and ascending moderate inclines will be involved
. Many of our lunches will be boxed lunches to be enjoyed out in the field
on camping stools\, so some physical flexibility will be required. Bathro
oms will often be scarce on this trip\, so the ability to wait for bathroo
ms or find alternative solutions is needed. If you have any questions or a
re unsure if this trip is the right fit for your agility level\, please co
ntact Brittany Goodrich at 505-954-7245 or goodrich@sarsf.org. \n\n\n\n\n\
n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease be advised that by entering th
is event\, you are agreeing to being filmed and/or photographed\, and the
resulting assets may be used for SAR marketing or promotional purposes. Sh
ould you wish not to be photographed or recorded on video\, please notify
a staff member or one of the event photographers/videographers.
