 \n\n\n\n\nBOOK DESCRIPTION: \nA vibrant new vision of food justice that ce
 lebrates Black food and recognizes the power of gathering to create sustai
 nable\, systemic change. \nFood justice is defined as the understanding th
 at our food system is unequal and that something needs to be done about it
 . But how can we create a world where everyone has enough? What does it me
 an to truly nourish ourselves and our communities?  \nIn Gather\, anthr
 opologist Ashanté M. Reese argues for a vibrant new vision of food justic
 e that places Black communities at the center and offers us a visionary\, 
 delicious path forward. Reese reveals that to truly create equity in our f
 ood systems\, we must embrace the abundance that already exists around us
 —and recognize that the social body is as important as our individual he
 alth  \nGather presents rich\, on-the-ground stories of gathering arou
 nd food in four spaces—gardens\, family reunions\, repasts\, and protes
 ts. Blending rich storytelling with analysis\, these chapters argue for th
 e political power of food and invite us to learn from the tactics Black co
 mmunities have long used to create sustainable\, systemic change.  \nTher
 e are no simple solutions to the problems of acute need. But by recognizin
 g that food justice is already all around us\, we can start working togeth
 er to create a more nourishing\, joyful world. Gather is an intimate a
 nd urgent invitation to embrace local power\, build better food systems\, 
 and nourish ourselves\, body and soul.  \nBIOS: \nAshanté Reese is an A
 ssociate Professor of African and African Diaspora Studies at the Universi
 ty of Texas at Austin\, holding a PhD in anthropology and a BA in history 
 with a minor in African American studies. Her work explores the intersecti
 on of critical food studies and Black geographies\, focusing on how Black 
 people produce and navigate food-related spaces despite anti-Blackness. Dr
 . Reese’s first book\, Black Food Geographies: Race\, Self-Reliance\, an
 d Food Access in Washington\, D.C.\, won the 2020 Best Monograph Award fro
 m the Association for the Study of Food and Society and the 2020 Margaret 
 Mead Award.  \nDanilyn Rutherford is President of the Wenner-Gren Foundat
 ion for Anthropological Research. She previously taught at the University 
 of California\, Santa Cruz\, and the University of Chicago. She is the aut
 hor of Living in the Stone Age: Reflections on the Origins of a Colonial
  Fantasy\, Laughing at Leviathan: Sovereignty and Audience in West Pap
 ua\, and Raiding the Land of the Foreigners: The Limits of the Nation on
  an Indonesian Frontier. Rutherford lives in Santa Cruz\, California.  \n
 Anand Pandian is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology at Johns Hop
 kins University. His books include A Possible Anthropology: Methods for
  Uneasy Times\, and Something Between Us: The Everyday Walls of American 
 Life and How to Take Them Down\, now available from Stanford University Pr
 ess. A former department chair of anthropology\, he serves now as presiden
 t of the Society for Cultural Anthropology. He also serves as a curator of
  the Ecological Design Collective\, a community for radical ecological ima

 rking at the intersection of Latina/x/o cultural studies\, sociocultural l
 inguistics\, and Chicana feminist studies\, the book takes an in-depth loo
 k at the cultural and linguistic interactions between two distinct communi
 ties in northern New Mexico: Nuevomexicanos and first-generation Mexicano 
 immigrants. Gorman examines the everyday lived language experiences\, beli
 efs about language\, and identities of these communities in New Mexico. Sh
 e also discusses the notion of “home” among U.S. Latinxs\, specificall
 y in northern New Mexico. The book talk challenges us to rethink ideas aro
 und “heritage\,” our heritage languages\, the persistence of Spanish i
 n New Mexico\, the future of Spanish in New Mexico\, and what it means to 
 contemplate shared linguistic and cultural homeplaces in Nuevo México and
  beyond. \nBio:Lillian Gorman is an Associate Professor in the Department 
 of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona. She is the Directo
 r of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Program and has over 20 years of e
 xperience leading Spanish heritage language programs. She is a proud Nuevo
 mexicana Chicana with deep roots in New Mexico. She was part of the first 
 class of Ronald E. McNair Scholars at the University of New Mexico where s
 he graduated with her B.A. and M.A. She earned her Ph.D. from the Universi
 ty of Illinois at Chicago. Her research interests focus on language and id
 entity within U.S. Latina/x/o communities and Latina/o/x cultural producti
 on. Her book\, Zones of Encuentro: Language and Identities in Northern New
  Mexico\, won a 2025 New Mexico Book award\, a 2026 American Association o
 f Hispanics in Higher Education Book Award\, and the 2026 Latin American S
 tudies Association Latinx Studies Section Humanities Book of the Year Awar

 he Blue Mesa Review as well as his essay “The Acute Nature of Chapsticks
 \, Pens\, and Lighters in Half and One.” He also published his short sto
 ry “Fox Teeth and the Plum” (A 20th Century Chicano Parody of The Devi
 l and Daniel Webster) in El Portal. His screenplay “Blockhead” has bee
 n purchased by District Studios. He graduated with an English Literature a
 nd Southwestern History Degree from Western New Mexico University. He has 
 edited and written for several New Mexican publications including pyragrap
 h.com.

  will discuss the narrative structure of all of them with an eye to whethe

 n each sketch\, and what is his attitude towards war in general and the pa
 rticular situation in each sketch?\n\n \n\nDonna Tussing Orwin is professo
 r emerita in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cult
 ures at the University of Toronto. She is a specialist on Leo Tolstoy and 
 Russian psychological prose. She also works on war and Russian culture and
  has edited an anthology on the subject for Bloomsbury Press. Professor Or
 win is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  She is a recipient of the
  Pushkin Medal\, awarded April 30\, 2008\, for contribution to the rapproc
 hement and mutual enrichment of different people’s cultures and the stud
 y and popularization of Russian language and culture.

DESCRIPTION:“To some extent\, and at rare intervals\, even I am a yogin.
 ”\n\nAny reader of Thoreau will have been struck by the quotations and a
 llusions to Chinese and Indian thinkers on almost every page of his major 
 works. He had read more Asian than Western philosophy\, and even wrote ess
 ays on Confucius and Buddhism\, as well as a translation (from French) of 
 part of the Mahabharata. His reading in the Eastern Classics was extensive
  and formidable. He was not alone in this: Emerson\, Bronson Alcott\, Whit
 man\, and other Transcendentalist writers were also fired up by Asian thou
 ght. They were preceded by Benjamin Franklin\, Thomas Jefferson\, and John
  Adams. In this lecture I will be exploring Thoreau's reading of Asian phi
 losophy: What exactly did he study\, how deeply did he understand these bo
 oks\, did they influence him\, can he be considered an American version of
  an Asian philosopher? I will also explore Thoreau's profound affinity wit
 h a body of work he could not possibly have known: the poet-recluses of Ch
 ina and Japan\, the Japanese poetic diarists\, and his peripatetic brother
  Matsuo Basho.  What is the significance of all this? \n\nIt will become e
 vident in this lecture that the presence of an Eastern Classics program in
  Santa Fe reflects an interest that is as American as....the Founding Fath
 ers and the Transcendentalists.
