DESCRIPTION:The Black Cinema Series is graciously curated by guest program
mer Anpa’o Locke. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA devastating an
d evocative portrait of motherhood refracted through the prisms of race an
d class\, Savanah Leaf’s auspicious debut feature (expanding upon her do
cumentary short\, The Heart Still Hums [2020]) is a deeply affecting wor
k of cinematic humanism. Set in the Bay Area\, the film follows Gia (portr
ayed with immense complexity by Oakland rapper Tia Nomore) as she contends
with pregnancy and poverty while longing for her children (who have been
placed in foster care) and dodging Child Protective Services in the fear t
hat they’ll take her soon-to-be-born baby from her as well. Facing an im
possible situation\, Gia warms to the idea of giving her baby up for adopt
ion\, and connects with a well-meaning\, middle-class couple (Sharon Dunca
n-Brewster and Bokeem Woodbine)\, who could potentially give the child a b
etter life. But a constellation of factors—especially Gia’s own sense
of guilt—lays bare the fact that\, for Gia\, there is simply no way to w
in. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLensed in richly textured 16mm by Jody Lee Lipes\, Eart
h Mamais both a heartrending film about a young woman grappling with the m
ost fundamental questions of motherhood amid utterly hostile socioeconomic
conditions\, and a formally sophisticated work that suggests and conjures
rather than facilely connecting the dots for us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuntime: 9
7 min \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnpa’o Locke is an Afro-Indigenous wri
ter\, filmmaker\, and curator who is Húŋkpapȟa Lakota and Ahtna Dené (

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Q&A event with director Damien Haus
er at CCA for our opening night of THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS MUMBI. \n\n\n\n\
n\n\nIn 2093\, filmmaker Kuve travels to Umata to document the aftermath o
f a war that revived ancient kingdoms. There\, he meets Mumbi\, who challe
nges him to make his film without the use of AI. As Kuve searches for his
own voice\, he begins to realize that even in a broken world\, beauty can
be found in the small human moments we often overlook. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Me
mory of Princess Mumbi is one of the most original and striking films to e
merge from the African continent. A sci-fi romance and a love letter to ci
nema itself\, it reframes current debates around AI in filmmaking—remind
ing us that\, while AI may be a powerful technical tool\, it is human emot
ion and character that truly drive storytelling. Creativity\, at its core\
, remains a deeply human force. As with so many classic romances it revolv
es around a love triangle\, but with a modern twist. Damien Hauser is a ph
enomenal talent who has crafted a richly imagined futuristic universe\, pr
oving that a Hollywood-sized budget isn’t necessary to build a believabl
e and enchanting world. This film signals a bold new era in cinema—one w
here the possibilities feel more imaginative than ever before. ” -Produ
 cer’s Statement \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“When I was younger\, I al
ways carried a camera with me\, capturing everyday moments with friends\,
family\, and my surroundings. After losing my little brother\, I revisited
the footage I had recorded and realized that amidst the loss\, there were
also countless beautiful moments worth cherishing. In Memory of Princess
Mumbi\, I wanted to preserve these kinds of moments\, ones that might seem
small but shape how we remember and understand life. The film is set in 2
094 and follows a filmmaker named Kuve\, who travels to Umata to make a do
cumentary about the Great War\, which took place in the 2070s. There\, he
meets Mumbi\, who not only helps him with the film but also challenges his
perspective on the world. Memory of Princess Mumbi explores the idea that
life is not solely defined by conflict. Beauty and tranquility can exist
even in turbulent times. Ultimately\, our perspective shapes the way we ex
perience and remember the world.” -Damien Hauser \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDamien Ha
 user is a Swiss-Kenyan filmmaker\, writer\, and director. Born in Zurich i
n 2001\, he began producing short films at the age of seven. He studied fi
lm at SAE from 2016 to 2020 and worked for the commercial production compa
ny FILME VON DRAUSSEN from 2018 to 2020. Throughout his career\, Damien ha
s produced a wide range of short films\, music videos\, plays\, and commer
cials\, always driven by his passion for fictional storytelling. In recent
years\, he has completed three feature films that have screened at major
international festivals including Tallinn Black Nights\, IFFR Rotterdam\,
and BFI London. His films have also received several awards and are availa
ble on platforms such as Netflix. In 2024\, he founded Hauserfilm\, a prod
uction company through which he continues to bring captivating and globall
y resonant stories to life on the big screen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Hitchcock. From beloved classics to overlooked gems\, Sundays with Hitch

n\n\n\nWith his third feature film\, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fo
g\, Alfred Hitchcock took a major step toward greatness and made what he
would come to consider his true directorial debut. This haunting silent th
riller tells the tale of a mysterious young man (matinee idol Ivor Novello
) who takes up residence at a London boardinghouse just as a killer known
as the Avenger descends upon the city\, preying on blonde women. The film
is animated by the palpable energy of a young stylist at play\, decisively
establishing the director’s formal and thematic obsessions. In this rel
ease\, The Lodger is accompanied by Downhill\, another silent from 192
7 that explores Hitchcock’s “wrong man” trope\, also headlined by No
vello—making for a double feature that reveals the master of the macabre
as he was just coming into his own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\

DESCRIPTION:“Visually lush and sweeping in scope\, All Dirt Roads Taste
of Salt is a poignant and richly sensorial portrait of a Black woman’s
life in Mississippi. \n\n\n\nEach scene represents a snapshot in the life

child in the year 1970\, learning how to fish with her father\; as a teena
ger\, flirting with her best-friend-turned-crush\; being cradled as a baby

 h love\, loss\, grief\, joy\, and the unexpected moments that shape a life

The Story of Temple Drake was based on William Faulkner’s pulp novel S
anctuary\, with Miriam Hopkins as a sexually adventurous wild child who is
viciously assaulted by a gang of bootleggers and forced into prostitution
. Hopkins gives a fascinating performance and avoids just about every clic
hé she might have fallen back on. \n\n\n\nPre-Code Classics will include
a 25-minute introduction from CCA Cinema Director Matthew Cannella. Matth
ew is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts with an emphasis on C

dation \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of The Stones Are Speaking\,
an award-winning documentary about archaeologist Mike Collins and a decad
es-long effort to study the Gault Archaeological Site in Central Texas. On
ce heavily looted\, the site ultimately yielded evidence of human presence
dating back some 20\,000 years\, adding to a growing body of research cha
llenging long-held archaeological timelines for the peopling of the Americ
as.  \nPart biography\, part archaeological mystery\, the film follows Co
llins and the community of volunteers and professionals who worked to safe
guard the site and understand what it could reveal. But the story also rai
ses questions that extend well beyond one archaeological discovery: Who ge
ts to interpret the deep past? How should archaeological knowledge evolve
as new evidence emerges?   \nFollowing the screening\, stay for a convers
ation with one of the film’s main experts\, Tom Dillehay\, and others\,
that places the film in a broader context and invites us to think critical

DESCRIPTION:Sofia works as a location scout for a TV pilot filming in New
York City. It’s her job to find the homes\, businesses\, and exteriors w
here the show will be filmed. Driving around the city’s different neighb
orhoods\, she enters the private spaces of strangers to photograph their c
ozy apartments and eclectic shops\, stepping into the fabric of their live
s while trying to satisfy the demands of her erratic employers. Over a day
filled with these encounters\, Sofia witnesses moments of curiosity\, vul
nerability\, and quiet tension until her work takes a sudden\, personal tu
rn. Drawing from her own experience as a location scout\, writer-director
Paula González-Nasser captures the poetry and costs of being a young crea
tive. Her celebrated directorial debut The Scout crafts a contemplative ex
ploration of urban disconnection\, following one woman’s journey through
other people’s worlds as she struggles to find her own. \n\n\n\n““T

ound us\, and it’s up to us whether we want to take notice of that or no
