 e begins where a narrow canyon climbs toward the high country\, linking th
 e rugged ascent of Falling Rock Canyon with the broad ridgelines of Sugarl
 oaf Peak\, Ontario Peak\, and Bighorn Peak. As we gain elevation\, the lan
 dscape gradually transforms from steep canyon walls and chaparral into pin
 e forest\, open ridgelines\, and expansive mountain vistas before descendi
 ng through the scenic Icehouse Canyon Trail.\n\nEach summit offers a diffe
 rent perspective of the surrounding landscape. To the south\, the Inland E
 mpire stretches toward the horizon. To the north lie the rugged canyons of
  the Sheep Mountain Wilderness and the Mojave Desert. Along the way we’l
 l have opportunities to observe changing geology\, mountain ecology\, weat
 her patterns\, and how water\, elevation\, and climate shape the landscape

DESCRIPTION:Since 2007\, UCSB Reads has fostered a shared sense of belongi
 ng by bringing the UCSB campus and Santa Barbara communities together to r
 ead a common book that explores compelling issues of our time. Conceived b
 y then Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas\, the program is led by the UC
 SB Library in collaboration with campus and community partners. Each year\
 , a committee of UCSB faculty\, students\, staff\, and community members s
 elects a thought-provoking\, interdisciplinary book written by a living au
 thor that encourages a wide range of readers to engage with a contemporary
  social\, political\, cultural or scientific issue such as climate change\
 , racial justice\, technology\, memory\, identity\, and democracy.\n\nThe 
 program kicks off in winter with a book giveaway for UCSB students led by 
 the Chancellor\, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost\, and University Li
 brarian\, and culminates with a free public talk by the book’s author(s)
  at Campbell Hall in the spring. Throughout the winter and spring quarters
 \, the Library sponsors a variety of free learning\, experiential\, and so
 cial events to explore the book’s themes. The selected book is also inco
 rporated into the university curriculum for winter and spring\, allowing s
 tudents to explore its themes in an academic context. UCSB Reads is genero
 usly supported by many individuals\, university departments\, and organiza
 tions. \n\nThis exhibition highlights the history of UCSB Reads since its

 Ora Sherk: Life Frames since 1970 traces Sherk’s sustained commitment to
  art and ecology in the public sphere and her influential role within the 
 first generation of California Conceptual and performance artists\, as wel
 l as within the artist-run space movement of the era. It showcases newly t
 ransferred film and video alongside rarely seen photographs\, collages\, w
 orks on paper\, artist books\, printed matter\, and ephemera documenting S
 herk’s early performances and site-specific interventions of the 1970s a
 nd 1980s.\n\nThe AD&A Museum is an educational partner of the multi-year i
 nitiative High Performance: A 2-Year Conference (2025–2027)\, which cele
 brates and historicizes High Performance (1978–97)\, the first internati
 onal magazine devoted exclusively to performance art. Through educational 
 collaborations and programming\, this exhibition highlights Sherk’s feat
 ure in the magazine. UCSB students will also offer personalized tours of t
 he exhibition as a reflection of their learning environment and varied dis
 ciplinary interests.\n\nBonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames since 1970 was organ
 ized by Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco and curated 
 by Tanya Zimbardo. The presentation at the Art\, Design & Architecture Mus

DESCRIPTION:Jackie Amézquita: Gemidos de la Tierra brings together the wo
 rk of Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Jackie Amézquita (b. Gua
 temala\, 1985). Rooted in land-based methodologies and ancestral material 
 knowledge\, the exhibition examines migration\, collective memory\, and th
 e relationship between human and more-than-human systems across time. Cent
 ral to the exhibition is the socially engaged work\, Gemidos de la Tierra 
 (Wailings of the Land/Soil) (2020–ongoing)\, where Amézquita casts in s
 oil sourced throughout the United States the names of individuals who have
  lost their lives while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 
 custody between 2003 and today. \n\nOn November 1 as part of Día de Muert
 os (Day of the Dead) celebrations\, Amézquita will publicly update the wo
 rk with the names of those who have passed away in recent years. Each name
  is hand-cast using soil from the state where the person died\, combined w
 ith masa\, salt\, and rainwater—materials that carry cultural\, ancestra
 l\, and elemental resonance. This method of making is both devotional and 
 political: a way of calling the body back into presence and refusing erasu
 re. Gemidos de la Tierra (Wailings of the Land/Soil) honors the humanity o
 f those whose lives have been reduced to statistics\, offering a stark con
 trast to the cold\, bureaucratic erasure that often accompanies death with
 in carceral systems. In this light\, the AD&A Museum shares this history f
 or collective witnessing as caretakers of their memory.\n\nAmézquita is 2
 026 Artist in Residence of Ecological Practice at the Cheadle Center for B
 iodiversity and Ecological Restoration in partnership with the AD&A Museum
  at UC Santa Barbara. During her residency\, Amézquita will conduct field
 work on campus as well as at the Santa Cruz Island Reserve to learn about 
 native ecosystems\, plant pollination\, and soil remediation. Amézquita
 ’s research will inform a newly commissioned work as part of this exhibi
 tion presentation at the AD&A Museum.\n\nJackie Amézquita: Gemidos de la
