Some of t he sandstone forms resistant walls and boulders\, while softer layers erod e more readily. As the mountains continue to rise and the creek cuts downw ard\, water gradually exploits the differences in the rock\, shaping the r ugged landscape we see today.\n\nThis is a landscape where geology is not simply something to look at—it is something happening around us.\nAnd th e best way to experience it is to enter the creek itself.\n\n**The Creek I s the Route**\nRather than simply following the established trail to San Y sidro Falls\, we’ll explore the canyon primarily by traveling in and alo ng San Ysidro Creek.\n\nWe’ll rock hop\, wade\, scramble\, climb around obstacles and route-find our way upstream. Where the creek becomes impract ical\, we’ll use the surrounding terrain or established trail to bypass it\, then return to the water whenever conditions allow.\n\nThe character of the canyon changes as we move upstream.\n\nRiparian vegetation follows the water\, with sycamores\, alder\, willows and other creekside plants cr eating a shaded corridor. Farther from the water\, the vegetation transiti ons toward oak woodland and chaparral. The creek provides habitat for a va riety of wildlife and is also part of the watershed historically used by S outhern California steelhead.\n\nAlong the way\, we’ll encounter pools\, cascades\, boulders\, sandstone formations and increasingly rugged sectio ns of canyon.\n\nThe landscape also carries evidence of its more powerful moments. The landscape becomes the experi ence.\n\n**Who Will Enjoy This Hike**\nThis outing is specifically designe d for people who enjoy wild\, off-trail exploration and are comfortable mo ving through natural terrain without the convenience of a continuous estab lished trail.\n\nTeammates should have solid experience with creek travel\ , rock hopping\, wading\, scrambling\, route finding and uneven terrain. S ome sections may require the use of both hands and feet\, careful climbing around obstacles\, or temporarily leaving the creek to find a better rout e.\n\nThis is not a hike for those looking simply to reach a waterfall by the easiest available path.\n\nThe pace will be exploratory rather than fo cused on covering distance quickly.\n\n**Understanding the Risks**\nCreek travel involves risks that are different from ordinary trail hiking.\n\nRo cks can be wet\, slippery\, loose or unstable. Water depth and flow can ch ange\, and obstacles that are easy to negotiate in one section may require a careful bypass in another.\n\nSan Ysidro Canyon is also a dynamic envir onment. Heavy rainfall can rapidly alter creek conditions\, move large amo unts of sediment and rock\, and destabilize terrain. Alders\, oaks\, and other riparian vegetation create a very different environment from the drier hillsides a bove.\n\nAs we move upstream\, the canyon gradually becomes narrower and m ore rugged. Water flows over bedrock\, forming cascades\, small waterfalls \, and pools. Sandstone ledges and canyon walls rise directly from the cre ek in places\, creating natural terraces and openings where flowing water has shaped the rock over time.\n\nThe Emerald Pools are one of the highlig hts of the journey—quiet pools and cascades formed where flowing water m eets resistant bedrock. Their appearance changes with rainfall\, season\, sunlight\, and recent storms.\n\nBut the pools are not simply destinations .\nThey are evidence of an ongoing relationship between water and rock.\n\ nCold Spring Canyon gives us an opportunity to observe that relationship a t close range. Water follows fractures and weaknesses in the rock\, erodes softer material\, transports sediment downstream\, and gradually reshapes the canyon. Vegetation takes advantage of the moisture\, creating habitat for insects\, birds\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and other forms of life.\n\ nThe canyon is therefore more than a scenic setting.\nIt is a living syste m shaped by the interaction of geology\, water\, climate\, and life.\n\n** The Wild Creek Traverse**\nThis will not be a conventional trail hike.\nWh ere conditions and terrain allow\, we will use the creek itself as our rou te.
