DESCRIPTION:Join the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics for the next
exciting installment in the KITP Public Lecture series\, “Artificial Int
elligence and the Age of Emergence”.\n\n\nThe universe is made up of thi
ngs that interact. From microscopic particles in matter to human minds on
the internet\, these interactions can produce remarkable examples of “em
ergence”\, or complex behavior that cannot be predicted from individual
parts.\nPhysicists remain deeply puzzled by emergence\, as it produces rem
arkable properties observed in some materials. The mystery extends beyond
physics to the rise of life\, the existence of consciousness\, and even th
e spread of internet memes. In this lecture\, Roger Melko will follow comm
on threads connecting these phenomena to the most striking recent example
of emergence\, artificial intelligence.\nAI may itself offer new tools for
unravelling the mysteries of emergence. Melko will describe how we are al
ready using it to understand and control complex quantum systems\, includi
ng quantum computers. Finally\, he will ask whether a deeper understanding
of hierarchies of emergence could allow us to harness it as a scientific
and technological resource.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nRoger Melko is a theore
tical physicist at the University of Waterloo and the Perimeter Institute
for Theoretical Physics. He earned his PhD from UCSB\, where he studied co
mputational approaches to quantum matter. He then spent two years at Oak R
idge National Laboratory developing quantum simulations for some of the la
rgest computers in the world\, before returning to Canada to take up his p
rofessorship at Waterloo.\nFor the last decade\, his research has explored
the emerging relationship between artificial intelligence\, condensed mat
ter physics\, and quantum science. His current work aims to bring AI and q
uantum computers together\, creating a virtuous cycle in which intelligent
machines help accelerate the development of quantum computers\, and new A
I/quantum hybrids open entirely new frontiers in complexity and intelligen
ce for physicists to explore.\n\n \n\nReception at 5PM\, Talk at 6PM\n\nPa
rking will be provided in Lot 10\nIn-Person RSVP: https://lp.constantconta
