DESCRIPTION:At its core\, Chucho’s work is an exploration of identity. H
is paintings seamlessly integrate ancestral heritage\, pop culture and spi
ritual themes—executed with a stunning technical precision that he has h
oned over the last 25 years. The scale\, level of detail and trompe l’oe
il within his works create an immersive and mesmerizing world that is trul
y something to behold. \nComing from a long line of storytellers\, childho
od dyslexia made continuing this family tradition challenging\, but simult
aneously led him to explore various visual media. In painting\, he found a
vehicle to continue his storytelling lineage. Growing up\, Chucho was gre
atly influenced by his grandfather\, a woodworker: \n“My grandfather tau
ght me that being alone never meant you had to be lonely. I believe alone-
time is where the magic lives. Attention to detail and precision is part o
 f every painting I create.” – Chucho \nIndah Gallery is open Fridays\,
Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm-5pm. \n*Gallery cannot be accessed from H

DESCRIPTION:Since 2007\, UCSB Reads has fostered a shared sense of belongi
ng by bringing the UCSB campus and Santa Barbara communities together to r
ead a common book that explores compelling issues of our time. Conceived b
y then Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas\, the program is led by the UC
SB Library in collaboration with campus and community partners. Each year\
 , a committee of UCSB faculty\, students\, staff\, and community members s
elects a thought-provoking\, interdisciplinary book written by a living au
thor that encourages a wide range of readers to engage with a contemporary
social\, political\, cultural or scientific issue such as climate change\
 , racial justice\, technology\, memory\, identity\, and democracy.\n\nThe
program kicks off in winter with a book giveaway for UCSB students led by
the Chancellor\, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost\, and University Li
brarian\, and culminates with a free public talk by the book’s author(s)
at Campbell Hall in the spring. Throughout the winter and spring quarters
\, the Library sponsors a variety of free learning\, experiential\, and so
cial events to explore the book’s themes. The selected book is also inco
rporated into the university curriculum for winter and spring\, allowing s
tudents to explore its themes in an academic context. UCSB Reads is genero
usly supported by many individuals\, university departments\, and organiza
tions. \n\nThis exhibition highlights the history of UCSB Reads since its
inception\, featuring promotional posters\, selected books\, custom bookma
rks along with testimonials and images of participants engaging with progr
amming throughout the years. UCSB Reads has become a beloved campus tradit
ion that brings together thousands of people every year and demonstrates t
he power of literature to bridge divides\, promote intellectual engagement
 \, and build community.

DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames since 1970 is the first major su
rvey exhibition of the late artist\, environmental educator\, and landscap
e planner Bonnie Ora Sherk (b. United States\, 1945–2021). Known for her
temporary public installations and performances\, Sherk developed her ini
tial landscape architectural intervention Portable Parks I–III (1970\, w
ith Howard Levine) by temporarily transforming San Francisco urban “dead
spaces” into lush\, living environments complete with sod\, palm trees\
, and live animals. Sherk expanded this approach as the founding director
from 1974 to 1980 of Crossroads Community (the farm)\, also known simply a
s The Farm\, an experimental community art and ecology center. Active unti
l 1987\, The Farm reconnected parcels of land fragmented by freeway constr
uction\, conceptualized new uses for overlooked urban landscapes\, and lai
d the foundation for a global movement to reclaim urban spaces.\n\nBonnie
Ora Sherk: Life Frames since 1970 traces Sherk’s sustained commitment to
art and ecology in the public sphere and her influential role within the
first generation of California Conceptual and performance artists\, as wel
l as within the artist-run space movement of the era. It showcases newly t
ransferred film and video alongside rarely seen photographs\, collages\, w
orks on paper\, artist books\, printed matter\, and ephemera documenting S
herk’s early performances and site-specific interventions of the 1970s a
nd 1980s.\n\nThe AD&A Museum is an educational partner of the multi-year i
nitiative High Performance: A 2-Year Conference (2025–2027)\, which cele
brates and historicizes High Performance (1978–97)\, the first internati
onal magazine devoted exclusively to performance art. Through educational
collaborations and programming\, this exhibition highlights Sherk’s feat
ure in the magazine. UCSB students will also offer personalized tours of t
he exhibition as a reflection of their learning environment and varied dis
ciplinary interests.\n\nBonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames since 1970 was organ
ized by Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco and curated
by Tanya Zimbardo. The presentation at the Art\, Design & Architecture Mus
eum at UC Santa Barbara is curated by Ana Briz\, AD&A Museum Assistant Dir
ector and Curator of Exhibitions. The exhibition at Fort Mason Center for
Arts & Culture was generously supported by San Francisco Grants for The Ar
ts\, the FMCAC Board of Directors\, and individual contributions to the Fo
rt Mason Fund. The exhibition at the AD&A Museum is made possible by Teige
r Foundation. Generous support is additionally provided by Isabelle Clara
 Greene\, FASLA.

DESCRIPTION:Jackie Amézquita: Gemidos de la Tierra brings together the wo
rk of Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Jackie Amézquita (b. Gua
temala\, 1985). Rooted in land-based methodologies and ancestral material
knowledge\, the exhibition examines migration\, collective memory\, and th
e relationship between human and more-than-human systems across time. Cent
ral to the exhibition is the socially engaged work\, Gemidos de la Tierra
(Wailings of the Land/Soil) (2020–ongoing)\, where Amézquita casts in s
oil sourced throughout the United States the names of individuals who have
lost their lives while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
custody between 2003 and today. \n\nOn November 1 as part of Día de Muert
os (Day of the Dead) celebrations\, Amézquita will publicly update the wo
rk with the names of those who have passed away in recent years. Each name
is hand-cast using soil from the state where the person died\, combined w
 ith masa\, salt\, and rainwater—materials that carry cultural\, ancestra
l\, and elemental resonance. This method of making is both devotional and
political: a way of calling the body back into presence and refusing erasu
re. Gemidos de la Tierra (Wailings of the Land/Soil) honors the humanity o
f those whose lives have been reduced to statistics\, offering a stark con
trast to the cold\, bureaucratic erasure that often accompanies death with
in carceral systems. In this light\, the AD&A Museum shares this history f
or collective witnessing as caretakers of their memory.\n\nAmézquita is 2
026 Artist in Residence of Ecological Practice at the Cheadle Center for B
iodiversity and Ecological Restoration in partnership with the AD&A Museum
at UC Santa Barbara. During her residency\, Amézquita will conduct field
work on campus as well as at the Santa Cruz Island Reserve to learn about
native ecosystems\, plant pollination\, and soil remediation. Amézquita
’s research will inform a newly commissioned work as part of this exhibi
tion presentation at the AD&A Museum.\n\nJackie Amézquita: Gemidos de la
Tierra is organized by the Art\, Design & Architecture Museum at UC Santa
Barbara and is curated by Ana Briz\, AD&A Museum Assistant Director and Cu
rator of Exhibitions. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the genero
us support of the AD&A Museum Council.

ptember Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series. The program will feature Ch
ris Ragland\, founder and executive director of Sea League\, for a thought
-provoking talk on ocean access\, stewardship\, and the importance of buil
ding meaningful connections between coastal communities and the marine env
 ironments that surround them on Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, at 7:00 p
.m. at the museum. SBMM members are invited to a pre-lecture reception fro
 m 6:15–6:45 p.m. \nTickets: Free for Navigators Circle members\, $10 for
SBMM members\, $20 for the general public\, and $5 for students and educa
tors with valid school ID or email. For reservations\, visit sbmm.org\, em
 ail reservations@sbmm.org\, or call (805) 456-8750. \nRegister Today \nIn
his presentation\, Ragland will explore the idea that nature connection sh
ould be treated not simply as a charitable cause\, but as essential public
infrastructure. Drawing on Sea League’s work creating immersive ocean e
xperiences that cross economic lines and bridge neighborhoods\, he will ex
amine how direct connection to the sea can cultivate future stewards\, sci
entists\, entrepreneurs\, and the workforce needed for a thriving blue eco
nomy. \nThe talk will focus on the Santa Barbara Channel as one of the mos
t ecologically significant marine environments on the planet\, while also
highlighting the reality that many people living along the surrounding coa
stline have never meaningfully experienced it. Ragland will discuss what i
s possible when ocean fluency is built at scale and how that vision could
strengthen marine conservation\, workforce development\, community resilie
nce\, and the long-term health of the coastlines on which society depends.
\n“There is no institutional infrastructure that normalizes ocean immer
sion for coastal communities\,” said Ragland. “This fragmented familia
rity produces fragmented stewardship. You can’t build a coalition broad
enough to protect something that most of your community has never had the
chance to experience.” \nChris Ragland is the founder and executive dire
ctor of Sea League\, a Santa Barbara organization innovating how youth con
nect to the ocean. A waterman-turned-social entrepreneur\, he brings toget
her a decade of experience as a surf coach\, lifeguard\, and kayak guide i
n Channel Islands National Park with leadership in environmental advocacy
and public engagement. As Creative Director at FinalStraw\, he helped adva
nce efforts that eliminated 300 million single-use straws. He has also col
laborated with NOAA and California’s Ocean Protection Council on public
engagement and served on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Adv
isory Council. \n“Chris Ragland brings an inspiring and necessary perspe
ctive to the conversation about the future of our coast\,” said SBMM Exe
cutive Director Dean Noble. “His work challenges us to think differently
about who has access to the ocean\, why that matters\, and how those conn
ections shape the next generation of marine stewards.” \nThrough the Mar
itime Distinguished Speaker Series\, SBMM continues to bring leading voice
s in ocean science\, maritime history\, conservation\, and coastal culture
to the Santa Barbara community\, reinforcing the museum’s mission to il
luminate our rich connections with the sea through education and storytell
 ing.

DESCRIPTION:About this event\nNon-profits are not treated any differently
under California wage and hour law than for-profit companies. There are ma
ny pitfalls that most non-profits have no idea exist. Most do not have ded
icated HR full-time professionals\, and even if they do\, there are still
issues that slip through the cracks. \nIn this interactive session\, we wi
ll explore some of the blind spots and common supervisory mistakes that ca
n create liability for your nonprofit organization and the steps you can t
ake to address them. Among the items we will examine: \nHas your nonprofit
properly categorized its workers as salaried exempt or hourly nonexempt?
You may be surprised at the rules.\nWhen you want to revise employee job d
escriptions and roles\, how much can a role change before it becomes a new
position? How should you be documenting it?\nIs your organization observi
ng meals and rest breaks correctly with proper documentation?\nIf employee
s are using their personal equipment (cell phone\, tablet\, computer\, hom
e Internet\, home electricity) on behalf of the organization\, are you pro
perly reimbursing them?\nDo your pay stubs comply with very specific Calif
ornia law? (Don’t rely exclusively on your payroll service)\nAre you rou
nding time for your hourly people?\nWhen you have a big event\, do you let
your hourly people take time off at different times?\nHow are you managin
g paid time off (PTO)\, vacation and sick time\, which tend to be more gen
erous in the nonprofit world?\nThese and many other questions will be answ
ered during this seminar targeted expressly for nonprofit organizations\,
large and small. Come with your real-world questions\, as we will create a
mple time for Q&A. \nFacilitated by: Jon Light\nAs the managing partner at

Arts & Culture was generously supported by San Francisco Grants for The Ar

DESCRIPTION:Geo-Bio Exploring\nSan Ysidro Creek cuts through the Santa Yne
z Mountains\, flowing through a canyon shaped by the interaction of water\
, rock and life.\n\nThe canyon exposes layers of ancient sedimentary rock\
, including sandstone and shale deposited millions of years ago. Some of t
he sandstone forms resistant walls and boulders\, while softer layers erod
e more readily. As the mountains continue to rise and the creek cuts downw
ard\, water gradually exploits the differences in the rock\, shaping the r
ugged landscape we see today.\n\nThis is a landscape where geology is not
simply something to look at—it is something happening around us.\nAnd th
e best way to experience it is to enter the creek itself.\n\n**The Creek I
s the Route**\nRather than simply following the established trail to San Y
sidro Falls\, we’ll explore the canyon primarily by traveling in and alo
ng San Ysidro Creek.\n\nWe’ll rock hop\, wade\, scramble\, climb around
obstacles and route-find our way upstream. Where the creek becomes impract
ical\, we’ll use the surrounding terrain or established trail to bypass
it\, then return to the water whenever conditions allow.\n\nThe character
of the canyon changes as we move upstream.\n\nRiparian vegetation follows
the water\, with sycamores\, alder\, willows and other creekside plants cr
eating a shaded corridor. Farther from the water\, the vegetation transiti
ons toward oak woodland and chaparral. The creek provides habitat for a va
riety of wildlife and is also part of the watershed historically used by S
 outhern California steelhead.\n\nAlong the way\, we’ll encounter pools\,
cascades\, boulders\, sandstone formations and increasingly rugged sectio
ns of canyon.\n\nThe landscape also carries evidence of its more powerful
moments. The Santa Ynez Mountains are highly dynamic terrain\, and the Jan
uary 2018 post-fire debris flows dramatically reshaped portions of San Ysi
dro Creek\, transporting enormous quantities of sediment and boulders down
stream.\n\nThe result is a canyon that continually changes through erosion
 \, flooding\, debris movement\, vegetation growth and regeneration.\n\nThe
creek is much more than a stream flowing through the canyon.\n\nIt is one
of the forces that continually creates the canyon.\n\n**Canyon & creek ex
 ploring videos from past events:**\nhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/nX2HiKl
 adK0\nhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/qwGhkTA_9pI\nhttps://www.youtube.com/
 shorts/7tawddTNoDQ\nhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/Qcy8aX2ff7w\nhttps://ww
 w.youtube.com/watch?v=FwMleMWV65k&t=23s\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6
2NtBO0PnTM&t=198s\n\n**San Ysidro Falls**\nEventually\, the creek leads us
to San Ysidro Falls\, a seasonal waterfall formed where the canyon become
s increasingly rugged.\n\nBut the waterfall is only part of the experience
.\n\nThe real journey is the changing relationship between water\, rock\,
vegetation and wildlife as we move through the canyon. Every bend reveals
a slightly different combination of geology\, water and life.\n\nAnd becau
se we’re traveling through the creek rather than simply walking beside i
t\, those changes are experienced at close range.\n\nThe canyon becomes th
 e trail.
The creek becomes the route.
The landscape becomes the experi
ence.\n\n**Who Will Enjoy This Hike**\nThis outing is specifically designe
d for people who enjoy wild\, off-trail exploration and are comfortable mo
ving through natural terrain without the convenience of a continuous estab
lished trail.\n\nTeammates should have solid experience with creek travel\
 , rock hopping\, wading\, scrambling\, route finding and uneven terrain. S
ome sections may require the use of both hands and feet\, careful climbing
around obstacles\, or temporarily leaving the creek to find a better rout
e.\n\nThis is not a hike for those looking simply to reach a waterfall by
the easiest available path.\n\nThe pace will be exploratory rather than fo
cused on covering distance quickly.\n\n**Understanding the Risks**\nCreek
travel involves risks that are different from ordinary trail hiking.\n\nRo
cks can be wet\, slippery\, loose or unstable. Water depth and flow can ch
ange\, and obstacles that are easy to negotiate in one section may require
a careful bypass in another.\n\nSan Ysidro Canyon is also a dynamic envir
onment. Heavy rainfall can rapidly alter creek conditions\, move large amo
unts of sediment and rock\, and destabilize terrain. The 2018 debris flows
demonstrated just how powerful these processes can be in this watershed.\
n\nFor that reason\, recent weather and creek conditions will be important
considerations in deciding whether the outing can proceed as planned.\n\n
We’ll adapt the route to conditions encountered in the canyon. If a sect
ion becomes unsuitable\, we’ll bypass it or turn around rather than forc
e the route.\n\nAs with any off-trail outing\, each participant is respons
ible for assessing their own abilities\, equipment and comfort level and m
aking appropriate decisions throughout the hike.\n\n**Group Culture**\nThi
s group is for people who enjoy exploring beautiful natural places while c
ultivating health\, fitness\, curiosity\, and a deeper understanding of th
e world around us.\n\nI believe every place has a story. Mountains\, fores
ts\, rivers\, coastlines\, deserts and canyons are more than scenic destin
 ations—they are landscapes shaped by geology\, climate\, ecology\, evolu
tion and human history.\n\nA beautiful landscape gives us more than someth
ing to look at. It gives us something to wonder about.\n\nOur outings prov
ide opportunities to move through diverse landscapes\, observe the natural
world\, exchange ideas and discover the connections that shape each envir
onment. Along the way\, we may talk about plants\, animals\, geology\, his
 tory\, science\, travel\, or simply whatever catches our attention.\n\nMea
ningful experiences come not only from where we go\, but from how we exper
 ience each place. Curiosity\, preparation\, collaboration\, humility\, goo
d judgment and respect for nature and fellow hikers are part of the journe
y.\n\nIf this style of exploring resonates with you\, we welcome your inte
 rest in joining us.

DESCRIPTION:Geo-Bio Exploring\nThe creek is the route.\n\nCold Spring East
Fork in Montecito is a small canyon with a remarkable concentration of wa
 ter\, rock\, vegetation\, and changing terrain.\nRather than simply follow
ing the established trail to a destination\, we will explore the East Fork
itself—moving through the creek corridor\, around cascades and pools\,
over rocks and boulders\, and through the changing character of the canyon
.\n\nThe journey begins beneath a canopy of trees\, where Cold Spring Cree
 k winds through a cool\, shaded canyon. Alders\, oaks\, and other riparian
vegetation create a very different environment from the drier hillsides a
bove.\n\nAs we move upstream\, the canyon gradually becomes narrower and m
ore rugged. Water flows over bedrock\, forming cascades\, small waterfalls
\, and pools. Sandstone ledges and canyon walls rise directly from the cre
ek in places\, creating natural terraces and openings where flowing water
has shaped the rock over time.\n\nThe Emerald Pools are one of the highlig
hts of the journey—quiet pools and cascades formed where flowing water m
eets resistant bedrock. Their appearance changes with rainfall\, season\,
sunlight\, and recent storms.\n\nBut the pools are not simply destinations
.\nThey are evidence of an ongoing relationship between water and rock.\n\
nCold Spring Canyon gives us an opportunity to observe that relationship a
t close range. Water follows fractures and weaknesses in the rock\, erodes
softer material\, transports sediment downstream\, and gradually reshapes
the canyon. Vegetation takes advantage of the moisture\, creating habitat
  for insects\, birds\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and other forms of life.\n\
nThe canyon is therefore more than a scenic setting.\nIt is a living syste
 m shaped by the interaction of geology\, water\, climate\, and life.\n\n**
The Wild Creek Traverse**\nThis will not be a conventional trail hike.\nWh
ere conditions and terrain allow\, we will use the creek itself as our rou
 te. Expect rock hopping\, wading\, slippery rocks\, scrambling\, climbing
around obstacles\, and occasional movement along or beside the canyon wall
s.\n\nSome sections may be easier in the creek\; others may require us to
leave the water and use the surrounding terrain or established trail. The
objective is to move thoughtfully through the landscape\, adapting our rou
te to the terrain and current conditions.\n\nWe will explore at an unhurri
ed pace\, allowing time to notice details that are easy to miss when simpl
 y trying to reach a destination:\nCascades.\nBedrock formations.\nPools re
flecting the surrounding canyon.\nPatterns in the rock.\nPlants growing wh
ere water persists.\nThe transition from shaded riparian habitat to drier
slopes above.\n\nWith each change in the canyon\, the relationships betwee
 n water\, rock\, and life become a little easier to see.\n\nVideo clips:\n

 hzqyU2prP8kWXV-N\nhttps://youtu.be/62NtBO0PnTM?is=dl9k3yaSuq_VaQuJ\n\n**Wh
o Will Enjoy This Hike**\nThis outing is for people who enjoy wild\, hands
-on exploration of natural landscapes rather than simply following an esta
blished trail to a destination.\n\nTeammates should be comfortable with:\n
\n* Rocky and uneven terrain\n* Wading and moving through shallow flowing
water\n* Slippery rocks and wet surfaces\n* Boulder hopping and scrambling
\n* Basic climbing around natural obstacles\n* Route finding and adapting
to changing terrain\n* Moving carefully and making sound decisions in a ca
nyon environment\n\nPrior experience with creek travel or similar off-trai
l terrain is strongly recommended.\n\nThis is not the easiest way to visit
Cold Spring Cascades or the Emerald Pools. The conventional trail provide
 s a simpler alternative.\n\nOur purpose is different:\nto experience the c
anyon from within it.\n\n**Understanding the Risks**\nCreek travel involve
s inherent risks that are different from ordinary trail hiking.\nRocks may
be wet\, loose\, unstable\, or difficult to judge. Water depth and flow c
an change. Falls on slippery rock can result in serious injury. Canyon ter
rain may require climbing around obstacles or retreating and finding anoth
er route.\nHeavy rain can rapidly change creek conditions\, while recent s
torms can alter the channel\, move rocks and debris\, and make familiar te
 rrain substantially different.\n\nIf conditions\, terrain\, or individual
 ability make a section inappropriate\, we will bypass it\, turn around\, o
r change the plan.\n\nEach teammate is responsible for understanding the r
isks\, honestly assessing their own ability\, and making sound decisions t
hroughout the outing.\n\n**Group Culture**\nThis group is for people who e
njoy exploring beautiful natural places while cultivating health\, fitness
\, curiosity\, and a deeper understanding of the world around us.\n\nI bel
 ieve every place has a story. Mountains\, forests\, rivers\, coastlines\,
deserts\, and canyons are more than scenic destinations—they are landsca
pes shaped by geology\, climate\, ecology\, evolution\, and human history.
\n\nA beautiful landscape gives us more than something to look at. It give
s us something to wonder about.\n\nOur outings provide opportunities to mo
ve through diverse landscapes\, observe the natural world\, exchange ideas
\, and discover the connections that shape each environment. Along the way
 \, we may talk about plants\, animals\, geology\, history\, science\, trav
el\, or simply whatever catches our attention.\n\nMeaningful experiences c
ome not only from where we go\, but from how we experience each place. Cur
 iosity\, preparation\, collaboration\, humility\, good judgment\, and resp
ect for nature and fellow hikers are part of the journey.\n\nIf this style
of exploring resonates with you\, we welcome your interest in joining us.

Arts & Culture was generously supported by San Francisco Grants for The Ar

Amézquita
’s research will inform a newly commissioned work as part of this exhibi

crossing unmarked railroad tracks. Street parking is available nearby on
Carpinteria Avenue. If you have mobility or accessibility concerns\, pleas
e contact us in advance so we can provide additional information about the
route and help determine whether the experience will be comfortable and a

DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\n\nTitle: Open Science in the Age of AI: A Struc
 tural Biologist's Perspective\n\nInvited speaker: James Fraser\, PhD\, Er
nest L. Prien Professor and Chair of the Department of Bioengineering and
 Therapeutic Sciences\, UCSF.\n\nDescription\nIn 2020\, AlphaFold transform
ed the field of structural biology by using artificial intelligence (AI) t
o solve a problem researchers had worked on for over fifty years: predicti
ng the three-dimensional structure of proteins. Its success was made possi
ble in part by the extensive collection of protein structures that biologi
sts have openly shared in the Protein Data Bank since 1971. AlphaFold demo
nstrates how research shared today can enable discoveries that its creator
s may never have anticipated.\n\nDrawing on his experiences as a structura
l biologist\, Dr. Fraser will explore what it means to practice open scien
ce as new technologies reshape how research is conducted and shared. He wi
ll discuss how data increasingly have both human and machine audiences\, a
s well as the debate over the missing AlphaFold3 code. Dr. Fraser will als
o reflect on the research questions he chooses to tackle because AI still
cannot solve them\, and why reviewing the work of others is one of the bes
t ways to learn how to become a scientist.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nDr. James Frase
r is the Ernest L. Prien Professor and Chair of the Department of Bioengin
eering and Therapeutic Sciences at UC San Francisco (UCSF). He received hi
s PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and was an EMBO Short
-Term Fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel before beginni
ng his independent research career at UCSF.\n\nDr. Fraser’s research exp
lores how proteins move and change shape — and how these dynamics influe
nce their biological functions. His lab combines experimental and computat
ional approaches to reveal the different structures proteins can adopt and
to understand how they respond to chemical\, genetic\, and physical chang
es. This work bridges structural biology\, biophysics\, protein engineerin
g\, and drug discovery\, with implications across a range of therapeutic a
reas. Dr. Fraser’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awar
ds and honors\, including the Carl Brändén Award from the Protein Societ
y (2025)\, the inaugural W.H. & W.L. Bragg Prize from the International Un
ion of Crystallography (2020)\, and an NIH Director’s Early Independence
Award (2011). He was also named to Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30”
list of rising stars in science and innovation (2011).\n\nAs a leader and
active practitioner of open science\, Dr. Fraser has worked to advance mor
e open\, transparent\, and collaborative approaches to conducting and comm
unicating research. His lab puts these principles into practice by openly
 sharing research outputs\, including preprints\, protocols\, data\, and co
de. For 7 years\, Dr. Fraser served on the board of ASAPbio\, a nonprofit
working to promote innovation and transparency in life science communicati
on. He is also a proponent for open peer review\, including collaborativel
y reviewing preprints with his trainees and sharing those reviews publicly
through PREreview. His commitment to open science extends to how research
and researchers are evaluated\, including advocating for hiring and promo
tion practices aligned with the principles of the Declaration on Research
Assessment (DORA).\n\nEvent logistics\nThis event may be photographed or r
ecorded.\nAdvance registration is recommended as space is limited (Registe
 r Now!)

DESCRIPTION:Geo-Bio Exploring\n**Explore. Observe. Discover.**\n\nThis hik
e begins where a narrow canyon climbs toward the high country\, linking th
e rugged ascent of Falling Rock Canyon with the broad ridgelines of Sugarl
oaf Peak\, Ontario Peak\, and Bighorn Peak. As we gain elevation\, the lan
dscape gradually transforms from steep canyon walls and chaparral into pin
e forest\, open ridgelines\, and expansive mountain vistas before descendi
ng through the scenic Icehouse Canyon Trail.\n\nEach summit offers a diffe
rent perspective of the surrounding landscape. To the south\, the Inland E
mpire stretches toward the horizon. To the north lie the rugged canyons of
the Sheep Mountain Wilderness and the Mojave Desert. Along the way we’l
l have opportunities to observe changing geology\, mountain ecology\, weat
her patterns\, and how water\, elevation\, and climate shape the landscape
 . Rather than simply visiting three summits\, we’ll explore a mountain l
andscape that continues to evolve over millions of years.\n\nThis is a ful
l day of hiking\, exploring\, and discovering one of Southern California
 ’s finest mountain traverses.\n\nDistance: Approximately 12 miles\nEleva
tion Gain: Approximately 4\,500 feet\n\nThis is a strenuous hike requiring
good endurance\, confident footing\, and steady pacing. Expect sustained
 climbing\, rocky trails\, uneven terrain\, scree\, talus\, exposed ridgeli
nes\, and sections that require careful route finding. While no technical
climbing is required\, the length\, elevation gain\, and terrain make this
a physically demanding outing.\n\nVideos from previous group hikes: https

’t merely give us something to look at. It gives us something to wonder
about. We explore not simply to see new places\, but to widen and deepen o
ur understanding of the world around us.\n\nOur outings emphasize observat
 ion\, discovery\, learning\, fitness\, collaboration\, and good judgment.
We value preparation\, self-awareness\, and respect for both nature and fe
llow hikers.\n\nIf you enjoy exploring beautiful natural places\, value he
alth\, fitness\, and agility\, and feel this hiking style and group cultur
e resonate with you\, we welcome your interest in joining us.\n\n**Please
Bring**\n\n* Plenty of water (at least 3–4 liters\, depending on weather
)\n* Lunch and trail snacks\n* Reliable headlamp\n* Sun protection\n* Appr
opriate layers for changing mountain conditions\n* Trekking poles (optiona
l but recommended)\n\n**Permits**\n\n* National Forest Adventure Pass or I

l Responsibility**\nParticipants are responsible for continuously evaluati
ng conditions\, making sound decisions\, managing risks appropriately\, an
d looking after their own safety throughout the event.\n\n**Acknowledgment
of Risk**\nBy RSVPing and participating\, you acknowledge that hiking and
other outdoor activities involve inherent risks\, including injury\, illn
 ess\, falls\, changing weather\, wildlife\, rockfall\, and other natural h
azards. You are responsible for evaluating your own abilities\, equipment\
, health\, and decisions throughout the event.\n\nThe organizer will make
reasonable efforts to promote a safe and enjoyable experience but cannot e
liminate the inherent risks of outdoor activities. Participation is entire
ly voluntary\, and you accept the risks associated with these activities.\
n\nCome prepared for a memorable day of challenge and exploration in one o
f Southern California’s most beautiful mountain landscapes.

 – 12:00 pm\nVirtual Workshop via Zoom\nHow long will it take for your or
ganization to meet its mission\, declare victory\, and go out of business?
Some nonprofits can envision success in a decade or two\; others expect t
o continue for generations. If you’re not activating the next generation
of leaders\, who will carry on? How are you adapting to demographic and s
ocial changes that make board recruitment – and board leadership – mor
e challenging? \nNonprofits that are serious about their own sustainabilit
y should also be serious about planning for the smooth and thoughtful tran
sition of their leadership. Whether this occurs due to intentional term li
mits\, an unexpected vacancy\, or the anticipated stepping-down of a long-
tenured leader\, being ready with a plan in place can help a nonprofit wea
ther the inevitable storms of leadership transition. \nIn this webinar\, w
e’ll discuss: \nHow organizations grow and change over time – and how
leadership needs change as nonprofits grow.\nBoard recruitment with an eye
toward succession planning.\nSuccession planning strategies for new and l
ong-serving Board chairs.\nPreparing for planned (and unplanned) vacancies
.\nLeadership sharing approaches that will help grow future leaders.\nTang
ible tips for training and empowering others to lead.\nThis workshop is de
signed for Nonprofit Executive Directors and Board Leadership. Team partic
ipation is encouraged. \nFacilitated By: Andy Robinson\nAndy Robinson (www

The exhibition at Fort Mason Center for
Arts & Culture was generously supported by San Francisco Grants for The Ar

r Foundation. Generous support is additionally provided by Isabelle Clara
