She often draws on the changing palette of a surround ing landscape\, from grasses and flowers to sea and skies. SFMOMA\, the S an Francisco International Airport (SFO)\, and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, among others\, have invited her to transform their commons via he r extraordinary palette. \n\n\n\nOn the cusp of Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture’s 50th anniversary as a nonprofit home for arts and culture\, Rosenberg folds the campus’ natural environment onto its former militar y buildings – buildings designed to send people and material half a worl d away. In her “mural alley” project\, however\, Rosenberg stays close : the edge of the San Francisco Bay spills out and onto 18 loading docks\, here remade into discrete painting blocks. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe waters ripple across continuous walls beneath pedestrian walkways\, and the interplay o f both pulls you forward into the site itself.  \n\n\n\nIn making The Sea Is But Another Sky\, Rosenberg invites viewers to see themselves as agent s and actors in this landscape. The body edits the f ilm simply by moving through it.” \n\n\n\nIn this way\, she recalls Fort Mason Center’s call to its first audiences\, in 1977: “You are invite d to attend\, to participate\, to propose your own ideas – to become inv olved in making these solid old army buildings come alive with all the vit ality and diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area.” Within The Sea Is Bu t Another Sky\, that vitality above\, around\, and all about Fort Mason Ce nter always includes You.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artist\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLe ah Rosenberg plumbs color\, memory\, and place in paintings\, sculpture\, installation\, and performance. Her work has been commissioned by The Con temporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco\; The San Francisco Arts Commissi on for SFO\; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, where she led th e pastry program for Blue Bottle Coffee’s Modern Art Desserts. A native of Saskatoon (Canada)\, she completed her MFA at the California College o f Art\; her thesis explored the artistic possibilities of cake. \n\n\n\nAR TIST STATEMENT \n\n\n\nFort Mason has a way of rewarding those who keep go ing. Past the galleries and cafés\, beyond where most visitors turn aroun d\, there is a point where the fishermen gather\, the seals lift their hea ds from the water\, the wind picks up\, and the horizon opens wide. Standi ng here\, I find myself thinking about orientation\, time\, the history of this place\, and what else is out there. \n\n\n\nI have been working in t he Public Art Corridor\, an outdoor space between Buildings B and C. When looking at Building B\, you are facing the setting sun\; the other way\, t he rising moon. Walking between them\, you move between day and night\, ea st and west. I kept thinking about how far back the history of this landsc ape reaches and how the Bay has always been shaped by changing light\, tid es\, weather\, animals\, ships\, people coming\, people going. Long before these buildings existed\, the sun and moon were already tracing these sam e paths overhead. \n\n\n\nI have always been drawn to sequences\; to repet ition\, seriality\, and the possibility of making paintings move. The 18 l oading bays offered an architecture that already contained rhythm. Each op ening became another frame. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs you walk\, the paintings unfol d almost cinematically: sunrise becomes sunset\, sun becomes moon\, sky be comes sea. The body edits the film simply by moving through it. \n\n\n\nSo me of the colors may seem a little fantastical for sky and sea\, sun and m oon. Yet every one can be found nearby: in the flora\, the art in gallerie s\, the food\, the buoys\, the cargo ships\, the sailboats\, and the atmos phere itself. The landscape is already painting these colors. The murals s imply gather them together. \n\n\n\nThen again\, the murals are only half the picture. Throughout the day the sun casts moving shadows across the wa lls\, redrawing the compositions hour by hour. The buildings are in conver sation with the sky. \n\n\n\nAnd then there is the wind. During installati on\, gusts lifted paint from our buckets\, carried color across the drop c loths\, as if laughing at our attempts to paint perfectly straight edges. Over time\, it felt as though everything here had become a character: the seagulls\, the fog horns\, the fishermen\, the seals\, the conversations d rifting between the buildings\, a paper bag tumbling down the corridor\, t he changing tide\, the afternoon light. \n\n\n\nEvery passage through the corridor is different. The painted colors remain the same\, but the light never does. Staged inside the historic former guardhouse at th e entrance to Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture\, the installation uses short-form video\, painting\, and archives to bring this speculative worl d to life. The narrative follows an underground group of scientists who di scover Earth’s sentient structure and occupy the complex\, turning it in to a protective fortress. Driven by curiosity for fleeting\, unnoticed ges tures\, these researchers study how to recapture lost attention and preser ve what has been fractured by our dissociation from the natural world. \n\ n\n\n\n\nServing as the field office and archive for an “Attentive Reali gnment Center\,” the transformed Guardhouse functions as a repository wh ere artifacts and memories are collected and documented. By gathering thes e fragments of existence\, the project reveals what lies beyond perceptual fatigue\, forming the foundation of a therapeutic practice designed to re habilitate human focus. Ultimately\, Sesay and Sundra use the center to cu ltivate a shared\, communal awareness\, illustrating that rediscovering ov erlooked moments is essential to the architecture of belonging. By directl y engaging with Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture’s history as a coas tal defense site\, the artists powerfully prompt viewers to question what in our modern world requires fortified protection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMuzae Sesay is a visual artist whose practice focuse s on understanding our collective relationship to space\, memory\, communi ty\, and the perceived truths within them. Utilizing skewed perspectives o f space and shape collapsed into two-dimensional planes of color\, Sesay c reates surreal geometric interiors\, exteriors\, landscapes\, and structur es\, presenting a situation in which to be experienced and explored. Inspi red by ideas of cultural reflection developed by questioning the validity of remembrance\, his work often depicts worlds created in response to a so cial introspection and/or an attempt to perceive a shared reality. The wor k’s goal is to provoke social reasoning and induce the viewer’s agency in the navigation and narration of the imagery. Born in Long Beach\, CA\, Sesay has exhibited at major venues like the San Francisco Museum of Mode rn Art\, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, and San Jose Institute for Contemporary Arts. His public art projects include several large-scale mur als and painted basketball courts in the San Francisco Bay Area. \n\n\n\nA lexcia Sundra is an artist and filmmaker who constructs speculative enviro nments that appear to have arrived from alternate timelines. Working acros s sculpture\, film\, and installation\, she uses design\, earthly material s\, and familiar objects to make imagined realities tangible. \n\n\n\n\n\ nHer practice engages time\, attention\, rest\, and memory to examine the forces shaping our relationships with the Earth and one another – and to bring what has always been present back into view. Rather than presenti ng alternative realities from a distance\, Sundra builds spaces that allow viewers to inhabit them\, however briefly\, and envision more liberatory forms of collective life. These ideas move fluidly across her work: as an artist and designer for Venus Blues at Minnesota Street Project\, she crea ted an interactive sculptural wall and immersive environment\, while her f ilm work includes Into A Space of Love\, a magical realist documentary pre sented by Frieze that traces the legacies of house music rooted in New Yor k’s underground culture. \n\n\n\nHer screen credits range from studio p roductions including Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)\, Uncut Gems (2019)\, a nd The Matrix Resurrections (2021). Deloria and his colleagues\, who argue that Native peoples should be understood not primarily through the past\, but “through the lens of futurity.” Indigenous knowledge\, they write\ , is not peripheral to contemporary life but generative of new ways of und erstanding it. In this spirit\, the exhibition considers Native presence a nd creativity as powerful forces shaping our collective future. \n\n\n\nTh e artists in the exhibition are: Victoria Grace Canby (Diné [Navaho])\;Jo rdan Ann Craig (Northern Cheyenne)\; Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation / Pechan ga Band of Luiseño Indians)\; Brad Kahlhamer (Indigenous ancestry)\; Terr an Last Gun (Piikani / Blackfoot)\; Jamie Okuma (Luiseño\, Shoshone-Banno ck\, Wailaki\, Okinawan\, and La Jolla)\; Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke [Cro w])\; and Keith Secola (Northern Ute / Anishinaabe). Working across paint ing\, drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and photography\, these artists engage contemporary culture\, Nation-specific visual traditions\, and personal hi stories in distinct and expansive ways. \n\n\n\n\n\nRather than commemorat ing the 250th U.S. anniversary\, the exhibition recognizes 1776 as only on e moment within much longer histories of Indigenous presence\, adaptation\ , and sovereignty. Creating space for artists to define their own terms of engagement\, the exhibition aims to bring forward concerns central to the ir practices. The works on view draw inspiration from a vivid range of sou rces: boldly painted Piikani lodges\; the precise geometry of Northern Che yenne beadwork\; the Indians of All Tribes’ occupation of Alcatraz\; car s adorned with blankets and regalia for the annual Crow Fair\; blood-soake d horror films\; and archival photographs whose subjects meet the visitor ’s gaze. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is informed by Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star’s caution against a “foe-based” framing of Native art –  one that risks tethering meaning to resistance alone and obscuring the s pecificity of Nations\, histories\, and individual practices. Here\, each artist’s work emerges from particular relationships to language\, land\, and material culture. No single framework can contain these worlds. \n\n\ n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictoria Grace Canby (Diné\, b. 1 978\, Albuquerque\, NM). Marin-based artist Victoria Grace Canby’s new w orks on paper\, created for the exhibition\, depict the Three Sisters – corn\, beans\, and squash – as a living model of resilience\, healing \, and collective care that connects Indigenous Peoples throughout the Ame ricas. “Through fostering our connection to these plants’ powers\,” Canby notes\, “we can overcome the impacts of colonization.” \n\n\n\nJ ordan Ann Craig (Northern Cheyenne\, b. 1992\, San Jose\, CA). Jordan Ann Craig’s paintings draw from references ranging from Northern Cheyenne be adwork and quillwork to the postwar abstraction of Agnes Martin\, all of w hich she translates into exacting\, poetic fields of color and form. In wo rks such as “Miss Your Musk” (2024)\, Craig foregrounds Indigenous abs traction as a living and evolving practice – one capable of holding per sonal narrative\, formal experimentation\, and cultural continuity without being reduced to any single source or meaning. \n\n\n\nSky Hopinka (Ho-Ch unk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians\; b. 1984\, Ferndale\, WA). S ky Hopinka’s film Sunflower Siege Engine (2022) brings together distinct Indigenous sites and histories\, connecting the Indians of All Tribes’ occupation of nearby Alcatraz Island (1969–1971) with Illinois’ Cahoki a Mounds\, one of the largest pre-contact urban centers in North America a nd a site from which ancestral remains continue to be repatriated. \n\n\n\ nBrad Kahlhamer (Native American ancestry\; b. 1956\, Tucson\, AZ). Painte d in acrylic\, ink\, and pencil on a bedsheet\, “Pima Air + Space” (20 25) belongs to Kahlhamer’s recent “dream sheet” paintings.
