DESCRIPTION:RSVP\n \nAn evening of discussion about Integrated Education
and its ongoing role in building a brighter future for Northern Ireland. \
nIntegrated Education is an education model where children from different
cultural traditions\, of different academic abilities and from all socio-e
conomic backgrounds learn and play together at the same school. It grew ou
t of a grassroots community movement during Northern Ireland’s Troubles.
Parents recognised that the separation of children into different schools
depending on their religious background was fuelling a divided society an
d hindering social and economic progress. \n45 years on from the creation
of the first Integrated school in Belfast\, much has been achieved…and m
uch remains to be done. Since 1981 Integrated Education has grown from jus
t twenty-eight pupils in one school to 28\,000 pupils in more than seventy
Integrated schools across Northern Ireland today. However\, despite clear
popular support for this model\, more than 90 percent of Northern Ireland
’s children still attend schools that are de facto either Protestant or
Catholic.\nJoin us for an evening to explore the successes and challenges
of the Integrated Education movement and its role in modern Northern Irela
nd. \nSpeakers will include: \n\nPaul Caskey OBE\, Chief Executive of the
Integrated Education Fund\nPast pupils of Integrated schools\n\nLight refr
 eshments will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Celtic Harpist & Storyteller Patrick Ball presents a musical a
nd dramatic performance \nTICKETS\n \nReturning to the UICC stage—Patri
ck Ball is one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world and a capti
vating spoken word artist. He has recorded nine instrumental and five spok
en word albums which have sold well over one-half million copies internati
onally and won national awards in both the music and spoken word categorie
 s. \nAlong with Celtic Harp & Story\, his beguiling blend of music and spo
ken word concerts\, Patrick has written and currently performs three accla
imed solo musical theater pieces. O’Carolan’s Farewell to Music brings
to the stage the legendary life\, the turbulent times and the glorious mu
sic of Ireland’s most celebrated and beloved musician\, Turlough O’Car
olan. The Fine Beauty of the Island is a musical journey to Ireland’s le
gendary Blasket Islands in search of a deeply haunting tune and the vanish
ed islanders who played it. “Come Dance With Me In Ireland: A Pilgrimage
to Yeats Country” is a musical and dramatic performance based on the li
fe and works of Ireland’s greatest poet\, William Butler Yeats—and was
a huge hit at the UICC in 2024. \nPatrick Ball is “a rare artist.” Fo
r in playing the ancient\, legendary brass-strung harp of Ireland with its
crystalline\, bell-like voice and performing marvelous tales of wit and e
nchantment\, he not only brings new life to two cherished traditions\, but
blends them in concert to create “a richly theatrical and hauntingly be
 autiful performance.”

ELEGRAPH \nMÁIRE is one of Ireland’s most important and influential tra
ditional musicians\, in 2001 receiving Irish music’s most prestigious aw
ard\, that of TRADITIONAL MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR – GRADAM CHEOIL TG4 –
“for the excellence and pioneering force of her music\, the remarkable g
rowth she has brought to the music of the harp and for the positive influe
nce she has had on the young generation of harpers”. She began to play t
he harp at the age of eleven. A West Cork background steeped in the oral t
radition led her\, while still a teenager\, to develop new techniques that
made it possible for the first time to play traditional music on the harp
in a stylistically accurate way. She won the All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic H
arp Competitions several times and in 1985 recorded the first harp album e
ver to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music\, The New-Strung Harp
 – “an intensely passionate and intelligent record and a milestone in I
rish harp music” THE IRISH EXAMINER. Her approach has been profoundly in
fluential wherever lever harps are played – “a single-handed reinventi
on of the harp”. Recent harp festival performances world-wide have inclu
ded a solo concert at the 11th World Harp Congress\, Vancouver\; Swiss Har
 p Festival\, International Harp School\, Wells\, B.C.\, Canada\, and VII R
io Harp Festival\, Rio de Janeiro. Two volumes of her arrangements have be
en published: The Irish Harper Vols. I and II. She contributed two article
s about the Irish harp and modes in Irish music to the Companion to Irish
Traditional Music (Cork University Press) and is profiled there\, in Celti
c Women in Music (Quarry Books\, Canada) and in the Rough Guide to Irish M
usic. “Her work restores the harp to its true voice” THE IRISH TIMES.
For further information visit Máire’s personal website. \nCHRIS is a
“brilliant English master of the acoustic guitar” (THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
)\, a “dazzling player” (ACOUSTIC GUITAR\, USA) whose work is “nothi
ng short of brilliant” (DIRTY LINEN\, USA). He began to play guitar at t
he age of four and at fourteen played his first paid gig in a folk club. A
prolific composer\, arranger and record producer\, he’s played with lum
inaries of many musical worlds: folk (harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh\, Boys
of the Lough\, Aly Bain\, Kathryn Tickell\, Danny Thompson)\, jazz (Stép
hane Grappelli\, Diz Disley and Danny Thompson again) and comedy (Fred Wed
lock\, the Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra) – receiving a silver disc for pr
oducing Fred’s international hit The Oldest Swinger in Town\, to which h
e also composed the tune and which reached No 2 in the charts in the UK an
d No 1 in several other countries. As Fred’s Musical Director and bandle
ader\, appearances on such iconic national TV progammes as BBC’s Top of
the Pops followed. One day in 1985 he decided he’d really rather play in
teresting music than pursue interesting paychecks\, so turned his back on
the commercial world and returned to his folk and improvisational roots. H
e has since concentrated on composition\, the traditional music of these i
slands and beyond\, and bluegrass and its intersection with the cutting ed
ge of swing jazz – he and Beppe Gambetta are probably the most highly-re
garded American-style flatpickers in the world who are not from the US\, a
nd he has shared the stage on a number of occasions with Beppe\, Dan Crary
\, Mark Cosgrove and many other such luminaries. He is a regular flatpick
guitar instructor and performer at Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp\, held
annually in Maryville\, TN. In addition to his work with Máire\, Chris to

 \, Finland\, Norway\, Estonia\, Denmark\, China and Italy. He has been pri
ncipal guitar tutor for Newcastle University’s Folk B.Mus course since i
ts inception. His book of guitar compositions and arrangements Adventures
with a Flatpick was published in 2001. His 1998 solo CD Fretwork was “a
