Both are deeply connected to the land and face threats to their survival due to various factors\, including hab itat loss\, environmental degradation\, and cultural assimilation. \n\n\n\ n“Land stewardship and sovereignty are indeed crucial for preserving Ind igenous ways of life and ensuring the continued thriving of both human and non-human communities. From a young age\, B rittany has always been fascinated with art\, mostly ballpoint pen drawing s. Brittany is a self-taught artist who specializes in black-and-white por traits. Her mediums are pencil\, charcoal\, and graphite. \n\n\n\n\n\nJew elina Acosta is from a small non-federally recognized tribe named Yokaia (the deep valley) from which the name Ukiah\, CA originated. She is the ow ner of Inkdigenous Tattoo\, which brings forward and makes room for her tr aditional and cultural lifestyle in the tattoo industry. Goldstein pai nts playfully charged\, shaped canvases. Mazal limns meditative\, research -driven paintings. Simpson creates light-activated Interference series. \ n\n\n\n\n\nThe works on view invite sustained looking\, revealing themselv es over time. Together\, these artists foreground abstraction as a dynamic mode of inquiry – one that remains deeply connected to both the percept ual world and lived experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artists\n\n\n\n\n\ n\nRebekah Goldstein (b. 1982\, San Jose\, CA\; lives and works in San Fra ncisco) creates vibrant abstract paintings that emerge through an iterativ e process of layering\, reworking\, and redefinition. Drawing on autobiogr aphical\, art historical\, and architectural references\, Goldstein’s co mpositions develop an internal logic as they are created. Her shaped canva ses\, which began as a meditation on her own body’s changes during pregn ancy\, have grown into complex studies of form\, line\, and negative pace. New works\, such as “Tell Me Like You Mean It” (2026)\, feature loose ly interlocking shapes that recall early 20th-century movements such as Co nstructivism and Cubism\, while their softened geometry and rounded contou rs evoke later design languages associated with mid-century modernism and 1970s supergraphics. Combining saturated color with improvisational gestur e\, Goldstein’s paintings invite viewers to navigate the relationship be tween her highly gestural\, painterly surfaces and the emphatic objecthood of the painting itself. \n\n\n\nRicardo Mazal’s (b. 1950\, Mexico City\ ; lives and works between Mexico City and Santa Fe\, NM) abstract painting s invite viewers to contemplate the intersections between place\, memory\, and the metaphysical. Well-known for works inspired by sacred sites and t raditions across cultures – from the villages of his native Mexico to Ge rmany’s Black Forest and Mount Kailash in Tibet – Mazal’s luminous\, layered surfaces evoke geological strata\, dappled light filtered through tree branches\, and the icy peaks of snow-capped mountains. \n\n\n\n\n\n Ricardo Mazal (continued). Grounded in firsthand engagement with these loc ations\, Mazal’s process often begins with pilgrimages resulting in phot ographic studies that are translated into tactile\, atmospheric paintings. In The Shape of Looking\, Mazal presents new works that develop the gestu ral lines of his earliest paintings into more resolved compositions. These are presented alongside recent works on hand-made silk panels\, created i n collaboration with Zapotec artisans from San Pedro Cajonos\, Oaxaca\, wh ere traditions of silkworm cultivation and natural dyeing have been passed down through generations. \n\n\n\nDavid Simpson (b. 1928\, Pasadena\, CA\ ; lives in Berkeley\, CA) is a pioneering figure in San Francisco Bay Area abstraction\, whose practice has remained deeply committed to the percept ual effects of color and light. Exploring a diversity of approaches since the 1950s\, his work bridges minimalism\, hard-edge abstraction\, and the California Light and Space movement\, forming a singular and sustained exp loration of painting’s material and optical possibilities. Since the 198 0s\, Simpson has developed a highly refined approach using interference p igments – paint that shifts in hue and depth depending on the viewer’s position and ambient light. While often appearing monochromatic at first glance\, these works reveal subtle chromatic variations that unfold over t ime\, inviting close\, sustained attention. Thompson\, at Magic Theatre in Fort Mason Center For Arts & Culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\ n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen an African American woman and a Nigerian man announce their engagement after a swift courtship\, their families gather for a mea l in Oakland\, CA – and what begins as a celebration soon simmers with tension as cultural differences\, familial expectations\, and questions o f identity bubble to the surface. \n\n\n\n\n\nAt a time when so much cente rs on who belongs and who doesn’t\, this deeply human comedy asks what i t actually takes to build a family across class\, across culture\, and acr oss generations\, and highlights the pleasures and dangers of loving and m isunderstanding in the Black Diaspora. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artists & P erformers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisa B. Thompson’s satirical comedies\, poignant dramas\, and insightful criticism explode stereotypes about Black life in the U.S.\, particularly the experiences of the Black middle class. Her awa rd-winning plays Single Black Female\, Underground\, Monroe\, The Mamalogu es and The Black Feminist Guide to the Human Body have been produced Off-B roadway\, throughout the U.S.\, and internationally. Thompson’s creative and scholarly work has received support from institutions such as Hedgebr ook\, MacDowell\, Millay Arts\, National Performance Network\, Center for the Study of Race and Democracy\, Clayman Institute for Gender Research\, American Council of Learned Societies\, W. E. B. DuBois Research Institute at the Hutchins Center\, Fusebox Festival\, and Texas Performing Arts. He r publications include Beyond the Black Lady: Sexuality and the New Africa n American Middle Class as well as articles in Theatre Journal\, Criterion Collection\, Journal of American Drama\, NPR\, Theatre Survey\, and The W ashington Post. Thompson also co-hosts and co-produces Black Austin Matter s\, an NPR podcast that explores Black life\, culture\, and politics in Ce ntral Texas. The San Francisco native currently serves as the Bobby and Sh erri Patton Endowed Professor of African and African Diaspora Studies and the interim associate dean of graduate education and academic affairs for the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. \n\n\n\nMar go Hall is Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (LHT)’s Artistic Director and an A frican Stew cast member. Depicting vege tation and wildlife from the land and water\, the artists highlight the im portance of Indigenous knowledge and traditional practices in maintaining ecological balance and human well-being. By recognizing the interconnected ness of all life forms and the importance of preserving biodiversity\, the ir work points to a more harmonious and sustainable future for generations to come. \n\n\n\nIn We are the Land: Between Earth & Sky\, Brittany Burr ows highlights the parallels between endangered butterfly species and the struggles of Indigenous communities. Both are deeply connected to the land and face threats to their survival due to various factors\, including hab itat loss\, environmental degradation\, and cultural assimilation. \n\n\n\ n“Land stewardship and sovereignty are indeed crucial for preserving Ind igenous ways of life and ensuring the continued thriving of both human and non-human communities. By respecting Indigenous rights to their ancestral lands and supporting their efforts in environmental conservation\, we can learn valuable lessons about sustainable living and holistic interconnect edness\,” said Burrows.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The A rtists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrittany Burrows is Nomlaki-Wintun and Pomo\, born in Chico\, CA\, who moved to San Francisco at age 11. From a young age\, B rittany has always been fascinated with art\, mostly ballpoint pen drawing s. Brittany is a self-taught artist who specializes in black-and-white por traits. Her mediums are pencil\, charcoal\, and graphite. \n\n\n\n\n\nJew elina Acosta is from a small non-federally recognized tribe named Yokaia (the deep valley) from which the name Ukiah\, CA originated. She is the ow ner of Inkdigenous Tattoo\, which brings forward and makes room for her tr aditional and cultural lifestyle in the tattoo industry. This striking sculpture helps to define the ent rance to FMCAC\, offering visitors a place to gather\, wonder\, and foster curiosity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Installation\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEchoing the historic track inside FMCAC’s campus\, the railroad- tie sculpture lifts dramatically out of the ground\, creating playful loop s and arcs for visitors to sit or walk through. Tied / Untied is abstract but looks vaguely familiar\, possibly referencing its surroundings throug h a nautical knot mid-tie\, or the rolling tides of the bay.
