From a young age\, B rittany has always been fascinated with art\, mostly ballpoint pen drawing s. Brittany is a self-taught artist who specializes in black-and-white por traits. Her mediums are pencil\, charcoal\, and graphite. \n\n\n\n\n\nJew elina Acosta is from a small non-federally recognized tribe named Yokaia (the deep valley) from which the name Ukiah\, CA originated. She is the ow ner of Inkdigenous Tattoo\, which brings forward and makes room for her tr aditional and cultural lifestyle in the tattoo industry. John Chiara is an artist whose practices are deeply rooted in the history of photography while continually expanding the medium’s possibilities. \n\n\n\nPresent ed in SF Camerawork’s gallery at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture\, John Chiara: Bay Panel centers on ambitious\, large-scale works that exemp lify the artist’s singular approach to image-making. The exhibition cele brates SF Camerawork’s central role within the SF Bay Area photography c ommunity and its decades-long commitment to supporting artists whose pract ices have challenged and redefined the field. \n\n\n\nFor Chiara\, SF Came rawork has played an important role early in his artistic development\, pr oviding support and visibility at pivotal moments in his career. The exhib ition honors that history while underscoring the organization’s lasting impact on photographers working in and around San Francisco for more than 50 years. \n\n\n\nJohn Chiara: Bay Panel. John Chiara describes his proces s as “part photography\, part sculpture\, and part event.” Working wit h and within enormous\, hand-built cameras that he transports throughout N orthern California on a flatbed trailer\, the artist creates unique positi ve photographs directly onto color photographic paper\, without the use of a negative. \n\n\n\n\n\n The resulting works retain visible traces of the ir making: hand-cut edges\, tape marks\, chemical streaking\, and light le aks that foreground photography as a physical and performative act. \n\n\n \nJohn Chiara: “Bay Panel” centers on the six-part\, horizontal work f rom 2020 of the same title\, originally commissioned by the Pilara Family Foundation for an exhibition in their former space. Shown only briefly bef ore being placed in storage\, the work now returns to public view for the first time. Stretching more than 24 feet in length\, “Bay Panel” offer s a sweeping meditation on the San Francisco Bay and the city’s layered photographic history. Referencing the panoramic traditions of 19th-century photographers such as Eadweard Muybridge\, Chiara’s work captures the B ay’s shifting atmosphere alongside markers of urban development and comm ercial exchange\, including the Golden Gate Bridge\, San Francisco’s dis tinct skyline\, and passing cargo ships\, viewed from various vantages acr oss the Bay.
