In June 2022\, he won a record-setting $21 million verdic t in a federal jury trial against the Fremont Police Department. \n  \n  \n\nRussell Jeung \nProfessor\, Asian American Studies\, San Francisco St ate University \n  \nDr. Russell Jeung is a sociologist whose research fo cuses on race\, religion\, and social movements within Asian American comm unities. He is the author of five books\, including Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans and Faithful Generations: Race and New Asian American Churches\, and co-produced the documentary The Oak Park Story. In 2020\, he launched Stop AAPI Hate\, a coalition project th at tracks COVID-19-related discrimination to inform community resources an d policy interventions against racism. \n  \n  \n \nShirin Sinnar \nProf essor of Law\, Stanford Law School \n  \nShirin Sinnar is an expert in ci vil rights litigation\, national security law\, and the legal treatment of political violence\, with particular focus on legal responses to hate cri mes and terrorism. Her scholarship has appeared in the Harvard Law Review\ , Stanford Law Review\, and other leading journals\, and in 2017 she was t he co-recipient of the inaugural Mike Lewis Prize for National Security La w Scholarship. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom\, she served on the Cali fornia Commission on the State of Hate\, and in 2021 testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on anti-Asian hate violence.
