DESCRIPTION:Dr. Terry Jernigan and other researchers in the Center for Hum
an Development and Cognitive Sciences at UCSD are interested in developing
more sophisticated and passive methods to collect data on children’s en
vironmental\, social\, and biobehavioral interactions in a naturalistic ea
rly education environment.  \nThe purpose of this research study is to le
arn more about how young children respond to a natural environment for mos
t young children\, in this case a special research version of an early chi
ldhood educational classroom.  The research includes observing how the ch
ildren respond to events\, activities\, and other people during a set of a
ctivities that are typical of early education classrooms\, such as Transit
ional Kindergarten classrooms. The observations we will collect include th
eir verbal responses\, behaviors\, emotional reactions\, what they pay att
ention to\, and what activities and events in which they are engaged. We a
re then interested in how these relate to children’s developing personal
ities and cognitive skills\, as well as other skills such as visual arts\,
  singing\, rhythm\, empathy\, and movement.\n \nFamilies who are interest
ed will first be asked some basic questions to determine eligibility for t
he study. If their child is eligible\, they will be offered camp dates. Th
is research study has a unique format where we collect data in the form of
a weeklong (5 days\, Monday through Friday) camp. Each day of camp will b
e about 6 hours long\, the typical length of a school day. During each day
\, children will be greeted by childcare staff at drop-off\, and we will d
o a morning welcome exercise while we set up the passive data collection d
evices. The children will then begin their day curriculum\, which will inc
 lude age-appropriate learning activities\, ample play-learning activities\
 , rest time\, and stretch/bathroom breaks. Lunch\, snacks\, small prizes\,
and water will be provided each day of camp. During the 5-day camp\, the
children will also participate in one-on-one cognitive assessments. These
assessments assess children’s current academic abilities\, such as langu
 age development\, numbers\, memory\, dexterity\, musicality\, singing\, rh
ythm\, empathy\, and movement. Parents or approved guardians are welcome t
o stay during camp days\; they are also welcome to drop their child off fo
r the day with our trained and background checked research staff and volun
teers. \nFamilies are paid up to $180 for participating. Children will tak
e home a prize each day. \nSummer camps will also be held each week of sum
mer starting July 6th\, and parents can sign up for any camp with openings
. \nWhy might parents be interested? \nFree childcare during school breaks
for working parents\nEnriching environment for children to continue learn
ing\nPrepare young children for classroom environments and social interact
ions with peers\nExposure to higher education research for parents and chi
 ldren\nAccess to study outcomes

DESCRIPTION:Tamar Berk crafts emotionally raw indie rock and alt-pop that
blends fuzzed-out guitars\, dreamy textures\, and lyrics that linger like
a thought you can’t shake. It’s a soundtrack for those moments when yo
ur mind is spiraling\, the lights feel too bright\, and you’re trying to
find meaning in the mess. Moody\, melodic\, and wired with quiet intensit
 y. Raised on classical piano and early Disney soundtracks\, she later foun
d inspiration in the Beatles\, David Bowie\, Liz Phair\, and Elliott Smith
—artists who shaped her instinct for melody and emotional truth.\nFierce
ly independent\, Berk writes\, records\, and produces her own music\, chan
neling inner chaos into songs that explore identity\, obsession\, and the
 strange beauty of overthinking.
