 together with a lacquer infused with gold powder. The breaks are not hidde
 n\, but instead transformed into something artful. Kintsugi is also a powe
 rful metaphor for life—we all experience difficulties and traumas\, and 
 this practice encourages us to embrace\, rather than conceal\, our so-call

 rn California\, Daring Greatly is a Canadian-American five-piece rock n
 ’ roll band rooted in the songwriting and vocal traditions of the ’60s
  and ’70s\, carried forward with a powerful modern sound. \nFounding mem
 bers Patrick Croome\, Liam Croome and Brayden Tario are joined by Americ
 an members Jeff Starkey and Brendan Cutrer in the band’s current lineu
 p. Much of their music begins with an acoustic guitar and a melody before

DESCRIPTION:Blood Memory is a major exhibition that examines how ancestral
  knowledge and cultural memory continue to shape the present through conte
 mporary art practices. The exhibition centers the work of regional artists
  from Native nations and Indigenous communities who consider how ancestral
  knowledge and lived experience are passed on across generations. Through 
 installation\, painting\, sculpture\, film\, photography\, fashion\, and d
 esign\, the exhibition presents inheritance as an active and sometimes uns
 ettled process. Histories may be preserved\, questioned\, reclaimed\, or u
 nderstood anew. \nThe exhibition takes its title from a term developed acr
 oss the writing of Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday. In his work\, memory can
  extend beyond the limits of an individual life. It may emerge in an intui
 tive recognition of place\, in an ancestral story felt with the force of p
 ersonal memory\, or through relationships sustained by language\, oral tra
 dition\, imagination\, and land. The artists in Blood Memory direct attent
 ion toward these forms of inheritance\, and investigate how the past remai
 ns present in the body\, in materials and images\, and in the choices arti
 sts make now. \n  \nFeatured Artists\nEsteban Cabeza de Baca\, Fox Maxy\,
  Gail Werner\, Gerald Clarke\, James Luna\, Johnny Bear Contreras\, Lewis 
 deSoto\, Robert Freeman\, Matthew Valdivia\, Sky Hopinka\, Summer Herrera\
 , Tiffany Wolfe\, X\, and XoQUE Art in Motion. \nThe exhibition includes a
  presentation organized by Cheryl Madrigal\, Cultural Resources Manager of
  the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians\, drawing upon the work of the Wa$xay
 am Pomki Museum.  \nThe exhibition also includes Before There Were Border
 s\, an interactive extended reality mural by OurWorlds\, presented as a di
 gitally connected counterpart to the eponymous mural at the San Diego Cent
 ral Library in downtown San Diego. Museum visitor contributions will becom
 e visible to Central Library patrons\, and vice versa\, creating an evolvi
 ng exchange between the two sites. The project was created by OurWorlds in
  collaboration with members of the Cahuilla\, Kumeyaay\, Payómkawichum\, 
 and Kuupangaxwichem communities. \n  \nSupport\nMajor support is provided

 rwin M. Jacobs\, will return in expanded form this fall for its third year
  at multiple venues on both sides of the border. The event will grow from 
 three days in 2024 and 2025 to four days this year. Free concerts will tak
 e place in downtown Tijuana and downtown San Diego\, along with a paid con
 cert at California Center for the Arts\, Escondido\, for which tickets go 
 on sale May 30 at sdtjjazz.org. \nThis year’s roster includes drum dyna
 mo and five-time Grammy Award-winner Brian Blade with his genre-blurring g
 roup\, The Fellowship Band\, and Panamanian-bred piano great Danilo Pérez
 \, who is a three-time Grammy-winner. Blade and Pérez were both longtime 
 members of the late saxophone legend Wayne Shorter’s quartet. Pérez\, w
 ho heads the Global Jazz Institute at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\
 , will perform here with the SDSU Jazz Ensembles and the Ensenada-based La
  Covacha Big Band. \nAlso set to appear is 2022 Sarah Vaughan Internationa
 l Jazz Vocal Competition-winner Lucia\, a native of Veracruz. Lucia perfor
 med here at the 2025 festival with her jazz band. She is returning with a 
 four-man son jarocho group that features her father\, Ramón Gutiérrez\, 
 a keen musical improviser and master of the four-stringed requinto. \nIn a
 ddition\, the festival will present San Diego and Tijuana performances by 
 the seven-piece Mingus Dynasty\, which features tenor saxophonist Wayne Es
 coffery\, pianist Helen Sung and Russian-born bassist Boris Kozlov. The ba
 nd pays tribute to the music of modern jazz pioneer Charles Mingus and wil
 l perform some pieces from his classic 1957 album\, “Tijuana Moods.” \
 nPulitzer Prize-winning composer and UC San Diego music professor Anthony 
 Davis is a lifelong Mingus fan. He has agreed to write a new piece for Min
 gus Dynasty to play at the festival\, which is now seeking underwriting fo

 azz aficionados throughout the U.S.\, four San Diegobased musicians came t
 ogether with a purpose: explore the art of song in their own unique way! R
 enowned jazz\, blues and gospel singer Leonard Patton teamed up with the c
 ritically acclaimed Danny Green Trio to form LP And The Vinyl. The band’
 s wide array of influences includes everything from jazz\, R&B\, and rock\
 , to 80’s and 90’s hits\, Brazilian music\, and classical music. Blend
 ing these sounds together\, LP And The Vinyl has created a highly unique a
 nd personal approach to music-making that leaves its audiences energized a
 nd craving more. The group’s repertoire draws from three separate areas:
  beautifully reimagined renditions of favorite hits by artists including S
 tevie Wonder\, The Beatles\, and David Bowie\, fresh and funky exploration
 s of jazz standards\, and their own original songs. What lends consistency
  to their approach is the group’s ability to bring something new to the 
 music every time. They play with no safety nets\, and every emotion is on 
 full display. Through Patton’s infectious charisma\, and the virtuosic i
 nterplay between pianist Danny Green\, bassist Justin Grinnell\, and drumm
 er Julien Cantelm\, the audience is taken along for the ride every step of
  the way! Since their formation in 2015\, LP And The Vinyl has performed a
 t notable festivals and venues including the Telluride Jazz Festival\, the
  Vail Jazz Festival\, Laguna Festival of the Arts\, Chandler Center for th
 e Arts\, and the Museum of Making Music. Their debut album\, Heard And See
 n released in April 2020 on Origin Records and features music by The Beatl
 es\, Quincy Jones\, Tears for Fears\, David Bowie\, Oasis\, as well as jaz
 z standards\, and original songs. Jazz critic Travis Rogers Jr. remarked i
 n his review\, “From tight arrangements to free-wheeling improvisations\
 , this telepathic trio evolves into an equally intercommunicating quartet 
 with Leonard Patton. If there is a group worthy of special attention and r

 Nathan was born into a musical family\, his grandparents could play variou
 s instruments as well as performing with a band\, his mom a piano player a
 nd his father for many years taught music and was a choir director as well
  as a Polynesian music teacher at various high schools. \nNathan’s early
  years consisted of piano lessons\, learning the guitar and ukulele and ha
 ving the natural ability to sing. From grades seven through twelve his mai
 n instrument was the saxophone. In college he performed in the jazz ensemb
 le as a bass player and the wind symphony as a percussionist. By this time
  his passion for the electric bass made him decide that this would be his 
 main instrument. \nIn 1983\, during his college years\, he started his pro
 fessional career accompanying performers such as Gabe Baltazar\, Henry Kap
 ono\, Loyal Garner and Nohelani Cypriano to name a few. He was a member of
  the Hoku award winning group\, Ka’eo\, as well as with the award winnin
 g group The Ali’i’s. He also did a 16 year stint with the legendary Do
 n Ho. He’s done various high school and college level seminars\, coverin
 g subjects from writing\, arranging and sequencing to computer music. \nFo
 r a few short years\, Nathan was a music teacher at various schools in Haw
 ai’i. He’s even done a project with students from Campbell High School
 . The students had a chance to see the workings of what goes on in produci
 ng a song and recording it. \nOther than being a stage musician\, Nathan h
 as performed on commercials for Windward Mall\, Meadow Gold\, JCB credit c
 ard co.\, etc. He’s done background music for various T.V. shows for the
  Travel Channel\, and has done music beds and liners for various radio sta
 tions. \nIn 2001\, Nathan released a c.d. called “E Apo Mai”\, which g
 arnered him a couple of awards. One was for “Male Vocalist of the Year
 ”\, “Song of the Year” and “Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Yea
 r”. A few years after\, he released a Jazz c.d. called “Bass Etude”\
 , which focused on the electric bass…this project was honored as “Jazz
  Album of the Year”. \nFrom 2003-2010\, Nathan was a member of Hapa. In 
 2005 they released an album called “Maui” which shot up the Billboard 
 Magazine’s World Music chart\, and peaking at number 7. The following ye
 ar Hapa went home with 4 out of 6 Hoku Awards. That very year Nathan was h
 onored as “Male Vocalist of the Year”. This was his second time that h
 e went home with this award which placed him in a small group of gentlemen
  who has won this award more than once. In 2006 Nathan yet again was honor
 ed as “Male Vocalist of the Year”\, his second in a row\, three times 
 total….the only male artist to be recognized as such. \nIn December 2008
  Nathan released his long awaited follow up to “E Apo Mai”\, called 
 “Kane’ohe”. This c.d. is focused on songs which celebrate the place 
 that Nathan calls home. He wrote all twelve songs\, played every instrumen
 t\, sang all the background parts\, engineered\, mixed and mastered the en
 tire c.d. Wayne Harada\, a very well respected music critic once said of N
 athan\, “Nathan is that distinguished rarity…a jack of all trades\, ma
 ster of a wide domain”. Don Ho exclaimed\, “A diamond in the rough wit
 h tremendous potential”. New York Times\, “Nathan has an indebt unders
 tanding of orchestration\, and his singing style is effortless”.
