DESCRIPTION:Hemisfair Wins Two World Urban Parks Awards\, Recognizing Ci
vic Park and Staff Hemisfair has received two 2026 North American region
al awards from World Urban Parks (WUP)\, honoring Civic Park for the Lar
ge Urban Parks Award and Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation
’s Operations Manager Jane Linde for the Young Park Leader Award.  The
WUP Awards highlight parks\, leaders\, projects\, and organizations adva
ncing the quality\, equity\, and management of urban parks and open spac
es worldwide. Hemisfair won two of the four awards out of all North Ameri
can entries\, joining17 other winners from around the world who won in the
ir respective regions.  “We are grateful that World Urban Parks recogni
zes how Civic Park is a world-class example of how a large urban park can
have a positive impact on the community\, improve the environment\, and se
t the standard for excellence in park management\,” said Hemisfair Par
k Area Redevelopment Corporation’s (HPARC) Chief Executive Officer Melis
sa Robinson. The park features an expansive lawn for events\, a tree-line
d promenade\, native and adaptive landscaping\, accessible water and desig
n features\, and spaces for recreation and quiet reflection. Designed with
sustainability and resilience in mind\, Civic Park includes a 42\,000-gal
lon underground cistern that captures and reuses nuisance water for irriga
 tion\, along with water-efficient landscaping.  “Civic Park’s high-qu
ality design is a reflection of the entire project team\, from us at HPARC
and the Hemisfair Conservancy to more than a dozen AEC firms and the City
of San Antonio all coming together to create a park that enriches San Ant
onians’ daily life as well as welcomes visitors to the area with its uni
que features and spaces\,” said Robinson. “As we continue to build one
of the world’s great public places\, this award demonstrates what makes
our urban parks district a world-class destination.”  Linde has spent
the past decade working at HPARC and continues to play a pivotal role in c
reating a welcoming\, inclusive\, and vibrant urban park district at Hemis
fair. Young Park Leader Award recipients recognize emerging professionals
under the age of 35 who exhibit leadership\, innovation\, and community im
pact. After graduating from Trinity University with an Urban Studies degre
e\, she advanced from a seasonal Games Assistant to Operations roles\, ove
 rseeing Hemisfair’s daily operations\, maintenance\, safety\, and visito
r experience across the district’s three parks.  “I am honored to be
recognized for work that often goes unnoticed\, whether helping butterfly
gardens thrive\, coordinating volunteers\, or writing play equipment propo
sals and more\,” said Linde. “Working at Hemisfair for over 10 years
has integrated me into the fabric of this community. Although operations
is not glamorous\, caring for such a special place in the city and the
world is deeply meaningful to me as urban parks are essential for well-bei
ng and community connection.”  The 2026 WUP Awards Program winners were
selected by regional juries representing North America\, Latin America\,
Europe\, and Africa. The honorees will be recognized during the WUP Sympos
 ium 2026 in Istanbul\, Turkey\, in October.  								\n \n \n \

P at the small classroom of the UEC to sign up for an 9:00 am start. First
\, enjoy the heavily illustrated introductory talk focusing on the park's
wildlife\, supplemented by the parks collection of pelts and skulls\, and
then find signs of wildlife along the nearby trails. Participants will be
encouraged to observe nature and ask about what they see.\n\nMinors must b
e accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. This presentation is not approp
riate for dogs. DIFFICULTY: Easy--it is definitely suitable for families\,
with flat terrain\, and a slow pace. This will be about a mile walk\, and
the event will last about two hours\, ending back at the Urban Ecology Ce
nter around 11:00 am.\n\nThe trail is a natural surface so be sure to wear
sturdy shoes and\, dependent on the weather\, bring water\, insect repell
ent\, sun protection\, and dress appropriate for the day and season. $3 in
dividual or $5 family donations to the PHP Conservancy are suggested to su
pport the activities in the park.\n\nThis event's sponsors are the Phil Ha
rdberger Park Conservancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Departmen
t's Natural Areas Office\, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, and the Ala
mo Group of the Sierra Club.\n\nContact Stan Drezek (stanwendre@gmail.com)

DESCRIPTION:Alamo Sierra Club Outings & Events\n**WARNING CHIGGERS**: Be s
ure to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirt and use a heavy amount of re
pellent. We will be walking grassy areas prone to chiggers! Also\, bring w
 ater\, hat\, and sunscreen.\n\nThis is a two-part event:\n\nPart 1: Famili
es with upper elementary age children and adults should arrive by 7:50 am
to register for an 8 am sharp Entomology Talk covering types of insects\,
morphology\, and the critical role of insects as pollinators. Then join fa
milies with younger children on the savanna for an hour of insect catch\,
ID\, and release. We will provide loaner nets.\n\nPart 2: Families with yo
unger children should arrive and sign-in by 8:55 to join the earlier group
as it moves from the classroom to the savanna by 9:10.\n\nOur objective i
s to learn about insects\, identify some of the more common species found
in our local area\, and learn the role of insects in the environment. The
event will be led by Nicolas Phillips an expert student of Entomology plan
ning to specialize in entomophagy\, an award-winning insect collector\, an
d an Integrated Pest Control professional. Nicolas has been an enthusiast
and lover of insects since early childhood and brings his passion and know
ledge to our park.\n\nThe morning begins in the small classroom with an ho
ur overview of all you ever wanted to know about these arthropods. We will
then move to the nearby savanna where families with younger children will
join us to catch\, ID\, and release insects. Nicolas will identify and el
aborate upon our captured specimens to explain general concepts. The nette
d insects are then released back into nature. The park is a great place to
find a variety of interesting insects.\n\nPlease arrive on the patio at 7
:50 am SHARP (or by 8:55 am SHARP for families with young children). Minor
s must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian. Dogs are not appropriat
e for this event. DIFFICULTY: Easy\, geared to families with children\, as
well as interested adults. This will not be a hike and should end around
10:00 am.\n\nDonations of $3 individual or $5 family to the PHP Conservanc
y are suggested\, to support park educational activities. Parents interest
ed in learning more nature for their children can go to https://txmn.org/a
 lamo/area-resources/natural-areas-and-linear-creekways-guide/family-nature
-guides/\n\nThis event's general sponsors are the Phil Hardberger Park Con
servancy\, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department's Natural Area
Office\, Alamo Area Master Naturalists\, and the Alamo Group of the Sierra
Club.\n\nContact Stan Drezek (stanwendre@gmail.com) for additional inform
