rough observation of the natural world. Her work combines close observatio
nal and scientific drawings of natural phenomena with hand painted textura
l surfaces and materials to create mixed media collages that reflect the c

n\nIzzy Beauchesne\, known professionally as De Izzy\, is a Salt Lake City
–based mixed media artist and SLCC student whose work explores memory\,
family\, sustainability\, and the natural cycle of life. Through immersive
sculptural installations\, such as her series Archive in the Wild\, she t
ransforms discarded objects into living archives that invite reflection an
d connection. \n\n \n\nHer practice began in childhood creating fairy hous
es from fallen palm fronds with her mother and building miniature sets for
stop-motion animation. After moving to Utah\, she became one of Dreamscap
es’ primary artists and its Volunteer Director\, discovering the possibi
lities of immersive installation art while deepening her commitment to sus
tainability.\n\n \n\nBeauchesne’s perspective on mortality was profoundl
y shaped by working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Viewing death as a n
atural part of life’s continuum\, her installations—featuring skeleton
 s\, greenery\, reclaimed technology\, and vintage film—celebrate remembr
ance and enduring generational bonds\, inviting viewers to reflect on thei
r own memories and personal histories.

 a (WEB)Room Name/Number: Evans Conference Room\, WEB 3780Campus Wide Event
: YesDr. Bahareh TolooshamsLearning as Inference: Inductive Bias and the G
eometry of RepresentationsAbstract: Modern AI systems are shaped by their
inductive biases\, which implicitly define the structure of the representa
tions they learn. These biases become particularly important when models a
re used for scientific understanding\, where the goal is not only predicti
on\, but extracting meaningful and potentially causal structure from data.
In this talk\, I present a perspective in which learning is viewed as inf
 erence\, linking representation learning\, generative modelling\, computat
ional neuroscience\, and inverse problems. I revisit the popular linear re
presentation hypothesis used in the mechanistic interpretability literatur
e and discuss the assumptions it imposes about the geometry of internal re
presentations\, rather than discovering their underlying geometric structu
re. I then discuss extracting hierarchical and functional representations\
, illustrating how the inference perspective allows us to explore differen
t inductive biases that reveal distinct geometric structures. These result
s highlight the need for principled\, theoretically grounded interpretabil
ity methods that better align with the structure of data and learned repre
sentations.Bio: Dr. Tolooshams is an Assistant Professor at the University
of Alberta\, a fellow of Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)\,
an affiliate of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI)\, and
a Canada CIFAR AI Chair. Dr. Tolooshams received her PhD in 2023 from Harv
ard University\, where she was also an affiliate to the Center for Brain S
cience. Before joining the University of Alberta\, Dr. Tolooshams was a po
stdoctoral researcher and held the Swartz Foundation Fellowship in Theoret
ical Neuroscience for two years at Caltech. Dr. Tolooshams’ researc
h broadly focuses on representation learning\, generative models\, interpr
etability\, and NeuroAI. She studies how AI systems learn internal represe
ntations of the world and how these representations can be structured\, di
sentangled\, and interpretable. A central theme of her research is mechani
stic interpretability: developing methods to understand how concepts are r
epresented inside modern neural networks and the principles that shape the
 se representations.
