 aw-review-symposium-dialogue-disagreement-and-dispute-resolution/This symp
osium will examine the conceptual boundaries\, practical models\, and peda
gogical interventions to assess the potentialities and limitations of dial
ogue as a process for fostering productive disagreement or transforming co
nflict. Can dialogue be understood as a distinct form of dispute prevention
\, resolution\, management\, or transformation? Are dialogues and their re
lated concepts and practices\, such as difficult conversations or civil di
sagreements\, effective ways to handle conflict? Under what circumstances
are they an appropriate process to address disagreements? How should dialo
gues be structured to promote understanding\, more constructive disagreeme
nt\, or meaningful conversations? How to apply dialogue principles to crea
te broader social change rather than just individual transformation?  Is
dialogue normatively desirable in the face of power imbalances\, deep pola
rization\, or intractable conflicts? What practical initiatives and commun
ity interventions can shed light on the use of dialogues to deepen underst
anding\, strengthen connection\, or transform human relations? This conveni
ng brings together dispute resolution scholars\, dialogue practitioners\,
legal scholars\, and other scholars from related fields\, including psycho
 logy\, sociology\, political science\, media and communication studies\, a
nd philosophy to shed light on what dialogues and difficult conversations
are\, how they are (or should be) conducted\, the contexts in which they a
re beneficial or detrimental\, and the interventions that can serve as mod
els for reimagining our relations to others.
