n\nIzzy Beauchesne\, known professionally as De Izzy\, is a Salt Lake City
–based mixed media artist and SLCC student whose work explores memory\,
family\, sustainability\, and the natural cycle of life. Through immersive
sculptural installations\, such as her series Archive in the Wild\, she t
ransforms discarded objects into living archives that invite reflection an
d connection. \n\n \n\nHer practice began in childhood creating fairy hous
es from fallen palm fronds with her mother and building miniature sets for
stop-motion animation. After moving to Utah\, she became one of Dreamscap
es’ primary artists and its Volunteer Director\, discovering the possibi
lities of immersive installation art while deepening her commitment to sus
tainability.\n\n \n\nBeauchesne’s perspective on mortality was profoundl
y shaped by working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Viewing death as a n
atural part of life’s continuum\, her installations—featuring skeleton
 s\, greenery\, reclaimed technology\, and vintage film—celebrate remembr
ance and enduring generational bonds\, inviting viewers to reflect on thei

I through Visualization and Topology: Fairness\, Validation\, and Interpre
tabilityAbstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly per
vasive across domains\, offering significant benefits while raising growin
g concerns about their opaque decision-making processes and broader societ
al consequences. Explainable AI (XAI) seeks to address these concerns by m
aking AI model behavior more understandable to humans\, thereby supporting
responsible AI development and deployment.  However\, explainability is
not a one-size-fits-all objective: stakeholders need different forms of s
upport depending on their roles and the stages at which they interact with
an AI system. This dissertation advances explainability for diverse stake
holders across the AI lifecycle\, from reasoning about the fairness of AI-
informed decisions\, to validating models’ external behavior\, to interp
reting their internal representations. By integrating visual analytics wit
h topological data analysis and AI agents\, it presents six works on three
complementary themes that help users understand\, diagnose\, and improve
AI model behaviors.  First\, in AI fairness\, we investigate how visuali
zation can educate nontechnical students about AI fairness concepts by des
igning interactive modules and evaluating them through a large-scale user
study.  Second\, in model validation\, we introduce VISLIX\, a visual an
alytics framework that is powered by AI agents\, to helps machine learning
(ML) practitioners and evaluators identify\, explain\, and test hypothese
s about systematic errors in computer vision models. Third\, the remaining
four works focus on interpreting models’ internal representations throu
gh Mapper graphs\, a topological and visualization technique\, to uncover
the organizational principles of models’ hidden spaces. In Explainable M
apper\, we develop AI agents that help users explain and verify structural
properties encoded in the hidden spaces of large language models (LLMs).
SAE-Explorer examines the relationships among concepts learned from LLM r
epresentations by Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs). TopoAlign compares represen
tation structures across models\, layers\, and modalities\, revealing alig
nment patterns such as feature merging\, splitting\, and disentanglement.
Finally\, LoCoMapper models and visualizes local structural uncertainty i
n Mapper graphs\, supporting robust interpretation of LLM embedding spaces
. Together\, these contributions advance human-centered XAI by integratin
g visualization\, topology\, and AI agents to support model understanding\
 , evaluation\, and responsible decision-making.

DESCRIPTION:Campus Wide Event: YesHiring is an economic problem: employers
cannot observe what candidates can actually do\, so they rely on signals
—degrees\, résumés\, referrals\, and interviews. AI is rewiring those
signals on both sides of the market. This panel explores why hiring is so
hard for firms\, examines how AI is changing the ways employers identify t
alent\, and explains how students can credibly signal their skills when a
polished application no longer proves very much.

n’t Know About Great Salt Lake's Microbialites"Description: In addition
to birds\, brine shrimp\, halophilic microbes\, and nematodes\, Great Sal
t Lake is home to a spectacular community of microbialites. These lumpy be
ige rocks host a diverse microbial ecosystem that forms a vital piece of t
he lake's food web but are under threat as the lake shrinks. Beyond their
modern ecological role\, the lake's microbialites serve as complex paleoen
vironmental records and may offer clues to understanding the early evoluti
on of life on Earth. This talk will explore what we know\, what we think w
e know\, and highlight critical gaps in our understanding of Great Salt La
 ke's microbialites.Host: Michael Werner

 k to School Event \n \n \n \n
The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL) once again demonstrated its
deep commitment to the community with its highly successful 2025 Back to
School event. By providing free backpacks stuffed with essential school s
upplies\, UICSL ensured students within our community are prepared for aca
 demic success. \n \n \n \n
This event is a cornerstone of UICSL’s holistic community services.
While students picked out their new supplies\, families also enjoyed free
food and a festive atmosphere. More importantly\, attendees were connecte
d with vital resources and information on the center’s year-round medica
l\, behavioral health\, and cultural programs. The positive outcome unders
cores UICSL’s role in fostering the health\, wellness\, and educational
achievement of Salt Lake’s urban Native community.

DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, Salt Lake City's last lesbian bar\, Paper Moon\, clo
sed after more than two decades in operation\, marking the end of a forty-
five-year history of lesbian bars in the State’s capitol. An often-overl
ooked chapter of the state's history\, how did lesbian bars emerge and eve
ntually disappear in Salt Lake City? This lecture examines the rise and de
cline of lesbian bars in Salt Lake City from 1970 to 2015\, exploring how
a mid-sized city formed a lesbian community distinct from anywhere else in
the country.\nDrawing on oral histories\, local newspapers\, and archival
research\, this presentation will reconstruct the history of Salt Lake Ci
ty's lesbian bars. It explores how a small and interconnected lesbian popu
lation\, unity between gay men and women in mixed bars\, expanding alterna
tive community spaces\, and Utah's restrictive liquor laws shaped both the
development and decline of lesbian nightlife.\nAbout the Speaker: Brookly
n Mercurio is a master's student in the Department of History at the Unive
rsity of Utah\, where she studies modern United States history and is comp
leting a certificate in public history. Her research explores the historie
s of gender and sexuality\, with a focus on lesbian spaces in midsize Amer
ican cities. She is passionate about making historical research accessible
to broader audiences through digital tools such as ArcGIS StoryMaps and e
njoys conducting oral histories to preserve and share community experience
s.\nFor more information on this event\, click here\nThis event will be he
