DESCRIPTION:Quilt artist Marge Tucker discusses craft\, creativity\, and t
he works in her current exhibition. Free and open to the public.\n\n\nWhat
does it mean to make something by hand — and when does craft become fin
e art? International award-winning quilt artist and instructor Marge Tucke
r brings that question into focus in this free public talk tied to her exh
ibition at the Art Complex Museum. \nTucker began her quilting practice wi
th traditional pieced quilts and has evolved toward abstract\, improvisati
onal design — work that pushes the boundaries of what quilts can do and
say. In this talk\, she will reflect on the concept of craft as it relates
to her practice and offer firsthand insights into the works on view in Qu
ilted Visions: Ann Brauer and Marge Tucker\, on display at ACM August 23 t
hrough November 8. \nWhether you are a fiber arts enthusiast\, a lover of
contemporary art\, or simply curious about the creative process\, this is
a rare opportunity to hear directly from the artist. Free and open to the
 public. Registration is requested.

guided tour that doubles as a bingo game for the whole family.\n\n\nAs our
“caller” leads the group from gallery to gallery\, sharing stories an

Look closely\, listen for the clues\, and see who spots it first. \n \nThi

amily. The first group to complete a full row shouts “Bingo!” and wins
a prize\, and the first to fill their entire card wins a second prize —
so there’s plenty of reason to stay sharp all the way to the end. \n \n
Once the tour wraps up\, the fun continues right into the Art Cart\, where
the group heads to the studio for a hands-on art-making activity to cap o

rer.\n\n\nThe PLANTS Project is a site-responsive performance created by t
he artists of Boston Dance Theater in collaboration with visual artist Kim
Radochia. Drawing inspiration from the quiet resilience of plant life and
the writings of Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer\, the work invite
s audiences into a shared sensory experience of movement\, sound\, and scu
lptural installation. Dancers move through the space like tendrils of grow

sustain life. Rooted in slowness\, sensitivity\, and ecological imaginatio
n\, Unfurling asks us to notice what is often overlooked and to sense our

DESCRIPTION:Dive into the art of Japanese tea with a hands-on ceremony exp
erience in a genuine tea house.\n\n\nA ritual practice of preparing and dr
inking tea\, the Japanese tea ceremony is a symbol of Japanese formality a
nd spiritual aestheticism. The ritual is known in Japan as “chanoyu\,”
which literally translates to “hot water for tea.” Traditionally\, it
would be practiced in a specialized space called a tea house\, designed s
pecifically for tea ceremony gatherings. \nThe Art Complex Tea House\, Sho
-fu-an or “Wind in the Pines” was designed by Sano Gofu and built in K
yoto\, Japan in 1969. It was reassembled at the museum in 1975 under the d
irection of Yasahiro Iguchi of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. It is a s
anjo daime (3 and ¼ mat) hut with two doors (one for service and one for
tea) and a daime tokonoma or alcove. \nSho-fu-an is dedicated to Kojiro an
d Harriet Tomita\, long-time friends of museum co-founders\, Carl and Edit
h Weyerhaeuser. Greatly influential in promoting Asian art and cultural in
terchange during his lengthy career at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Kojiro To
mita had become a close advisor of the Weyerhaeuser family in collecting i
mportant art from Japan and China. \nThe Tea Garden\, or roji\, is intende
d to prepare the body and mind for the tea ceremony by bringing visitors c
loser to nature. The Art Complex Museum roji is adapted to accommodate the
many viewers of the ceremony and includes important features: stones\, la

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk with Wen-hao Tien\, featured in the
exhibition Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Scholars' Rocks.\n\n\nB
orn and raised in Taiwan and based in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, Tien is
an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose practice grew out of her ea
rly training in Chinese calligraphy and multimedia painting. In recent yea
rs\, her work has turned toward foraging materials and stories from commun
 ity streets\, most notably Boston’s Chinatown\, where she has traced a c
ultural landscape in flux since the 1990s. Across mediums\, her art asks v
iewers to notice the unnoticed — finding pattern\, language\, and metaph
or in the overlooked textures of daily life. \nIn this talk\, Tien will di
scuss how her attentiveness to found materials and community narrative con
nects to the scholars’ rock tradition’s core practice: slowing down to
find meaning\, form\, and even language in the natural and the everyday.
She’ll also speak to her broader body of work\, including her recent res
idency at Boston’s Pao Arts Center and her membership at Boston Sculptor
 s Gallery.
