 n Film” series with Trilingua Cinema\, we will be holding a screening a
 nd discussion of The Pruitt-Igoe Myth\, a documentary examining the rise 
 and fall of the Pruitt-Igoe public housing complex in St. Louis and the la
 rger forces that shaped its story. \n\n\nOnce celebrated as a model for mo
 dern public housing\, Pruitt-Igoe was demolished less than twenty years af
 ter it opened and became a national symbol of so-called “failed” publi
 c housing. But the film asks us to look beyond the buildings themselves an
 d toward the racism\, segregation\, disinvestment\, and public policy deci
 sions that shaped the lives of the people who lived there. Join us for a d
 iscussion afterward about what Pruitt-Igoe can teach us about housing just
 ice\, displacement\, and the ways communities are often blamed for systems
  that failed them. \n\n\nThe term\, “Public Housing\,” conjures many d
 ifferent images for people. Many people associate public housing with rund
 own properties that are cold and uninviting. This was the reputation the P
 ruitt-Igoe property is St Louis. However\, when examined more closely the 
 story is far more complicated. Join us and public housing residents from t
 he Twin Cities to talk about what public housing really means and how we c

 , desperate man begging for jobs\, a Teamsters Local with 175 members deci
 ded to take on the Minneapolis business community’s rabid anti-union Ass
 ociation. \nGrowing rapidly to a militant force of committed workers 5\,00
 0 strong\, they battled the cops\, the hired thugs and the union-busting p
 oliticians. Some battles were bloody\, all of them were fraught with dange
 r. \nNever backing down\, IBT Local 574 eventually broke the grip of the b
 usiness community\, making Minneapolis a union town and inspiring union or
 ganizing across the Midwest. \nAuthor John Hanson recalls the stories his 
 father told him about those heroic men and women and the fight to establis
 h a democratic union. His is a poignant\, personal story that speaks a uni
 versal language of courage and justice. \n  \nAbout the Author\nJohn’s 
 interest in unions and labor history began at home. His dad was a union or
 ganizer and strike committee member in the famous 1934 Teamsters strike in
  Minneapolis. His father was a great storyteller with a sharp memory for d
 ates and events. After studying\nat the University of Minnesota and Willia
 m Mitchell College of Law\, John built a career across many roles—union 
 and nonunion\, government\, mediation\, and quality improvement work\, all
  the while immersing himself in the rich history of the Minneapolis immigr
 ant experience and the labor movement.

 sity Chair\, Professor of History\, and Founding Director of the Racial Ju
 stice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas. A nationally recognized 
 historian\, author\, and public scholar\, his work explores the intersecti
 ons of history\, democracy\, civil rights\, and public memory while helpin
 g communities use history as a tool for civic engagement and social change
 . \nHe is the author\, co-author\, and editor of eleven books\, including 
 Black Politics/White Power: Civil Rights\, Black Power\, and the Black Pan
 thers in New Haven\; The Black Panthers: Portraits from an Unfinished Revo
 lution\; Teaching Beyond the Textbook\; Call Him Jack: The Story of Jackie
  Robinson\, Black Freedom Fighter\; More Than a Dream: The Radical March o
 n Washington for Jobs and Freedom\, which was longlisted for the National 
 Book Award for Young People’s Literature\; Afterlife: A Collective Histo
 ry of Loss and Redemption in Pandemic America\; and Rethinking the Black F
 reedom Movement. \nPeter Rachleff has spent the last forty-five years expl
 oring the intersections of race and class in the development of the United
  States and trying to have an impact on how they function in our lives. He
  earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in1981\, and he publishe
 d his dissertation as BLACK LABOR IN RICHMOND\, 1865-1890 (University of I
 llinois Press\, 1989). From 1982 to 2012 he taught labor\, immigration\, a
 nd African American history at Macalester College\, and occasional classes
  at the University of Minnesota\, Metropolitan State University\, and New 
 Brookswood Labor College. Beyond academia\, he served on the executive boa
 rd of the Labor and Working Class History Association from 2005-2009 and a
 s President of the International Labor and Working Class Studies Associati
 on in 2006-2007. He also served on the Editorial Board of SOCIAL SCIENCE H
 ISTORY\, LABOR HISTORY\, LABOR: STUDIES IN WORKING CLASS HISTORY OF THE AM
 ERICAS\, and SAFUNDI: SOUTH AFRICAN & AMERICAN COMPARATIVE STUDIES. During
  the Hormel strike of 1985-86\, he served as co-chair of the Twin Cities L
 ocal P-9 Solidarity Committee\, and he played a similar role during the No
 rthwest Airlines Mechanics’ strike of 2005-2006. In 2014\, Peter and his
  partner Beth Cleary co-founded the East Side Freedom Library\, with the m
 ission to “inspire solidarity\, work for justice\, and advocate for equi
 ty for all.” In 2022\, they stepped down as the co-executive directors o
 f the Library\, although they are still involved with its work. Recently\,
  he has discovered St. Paul Public Schools Adult & Community Ed and the Un
 iversity of Minnesota’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as places to s
 atisfy his desire to continue to create and share knowledge. \nShannon Gib
 ney is a writer\, educator\, and activist. She is author of several books\
 , including The Girl I Am\, Was\, and Never Will Be: A Speculative Memoir 
 of Transracial Adoption\, which received a Michael L. Printz Honor and a M
 innesota Book Award\; See No Color and Dream Country\, both winners of Min
 nesota Book Awards\; Where We Come From (co-authored)\, winner of the 2023
  Carter G. Woodson Award\; and Sam and the Incredible African and American
  Food Fight\, a children’s picture book about a cross-cultural family\, 
 and We Miss You\, George Floyd. A Bush Artist and McKnight Writing Fellow\
 , Gibney teaches at Minneapolis College\, where she was named Educator of 
 the Year in 2023. She lives with her two children in Minneapolis\, is a pa
 rent leader at Minneapolis Families for Public Schools (MFPS)\, and a cand
 idate for the Minneapolis Public Schools Board.
