DESCRIPTION:Chainsaws are great tools\, at least when sharpened and runnin
g properly. When not\, they are quite aggravating to use. \nThis discussio
n and demonstration-based class will cover basic daily maintenance and cha
in sharpening to keep your chainsaw work-ready. Topics include fuel\, filt
 ers\, spark plugs\, guide bars\, chains\, sprockets\, and more. The inform
ation will apply to most current chainsaws of any brand\, including gas\,
corded\, and battery models. \nPlease note: this class will not cover chai
nsaw use or safety. \nMeet the instructor: Philip Jacobs has spent 25 year
s working with volunteer disaster response groups. As a self-described “
tool geek\,” he has spent a lot of time learning how to properly maintai
n chainsaws and\, as an instructor\, how to present that to various groups

DESCRIPTION:The Death of Jesus and the Message of Life: According to the G
 ospel of John\nTuesday\, September 22\, 2026\, 6–8:30 p.m.\nWith Craig K
oester\nIn-Person and Online\n“Life” is the heart of the gospel John p
roclaims. It defines who God is and what God gives. The gift is both physi
cal and relational. It begins now and shapes a way of life in the world\,
and it holds within it Christ’s promise of resurrection. Jesus’ crucif
ixion remains the stubborn fact that challenges our understanding of what
the message of life means. His death was the outcome of social and politic
al forces that culminated in state-sponsored violence. But in putting to d
eath the Giver of Life\, the world reveals the depth of its estrangement f
rom God. Using different interpretive lenses\, John presses us to see how
God\, through the death of Jesus\, does indeed give life. The Gospel takes
us beyond popular notions of sin and sacrifice by presenting a more radic
al message. Through the crucifixion\, God conveys the fullness of his love
for the world in order to evoke the faith that gives life. This cruciform
love is militant\, confronting the forces of deception and hate\, and giv
ing urgency to contemporary Christian witness that seeks fullness of life
for individuals\, communities\, and the world God made.\nLearn more and re
 gister.\nluthersem.edu/fretheim26
